Google just announced the Chromecast with Google TV for $99, but a little less known is a deal that allows you to tack on 6 months of Netflix ($95.94 worth of credit) for a grand total of $139.99, bringing the effective price of the Chromecast to $44.05.

Seems to be a long-running deal (through to December 31, 2021).

Tips:

  • If you're a Google One subscriber, you'll get 3% back in store credit if you're on a 200 GB plan, or 10% back in store credit if you're on a 2 TB or higher plan.
  • You can purchase three of these bundles per Google account.
  • The deal is available to both new and existing Netflix subscribers.
  • The 6 months of Netflix offer is based on a Standard plan ($15.99/month). Netflix works off a dollar-based credit model, so if you're on a Basic plan ($10.99/month), you'll actually get 8.73 months worth of credit, but if you're on a Premium plan ($19.99/month), you'll get 4.80 months worth of credit.
  • If you've redeemed the Netflix offer, but end up returning the Chromecast, Google will refund you $99; meaning you'll still have scored $95.94 worth of Netflix credit for $40.99.

          I had to do the same thing with my wifi channel to get it to work, but it's slowed down my 5GHz connection quite a bit. Not sure if I want to put up with that just to use this device; it shouldn't need router changes to work. Did Google mention they're developing an actual fix for this?

          Thanks so much! Why wouldn't Google make this a key callout? Such a great selling point, I may buy myself another one then for the bedroom TV!

          Edit: reading through the comments of your YouTube link, it doesn't have a 'connect' option so you have to re-pair every time you want to use the headphones. Also, some user pointed out it's BT 4.1 which can cause lip sync issues - BT 5 would have been better.

            @bozbargain: Ahh I see! Maybe they'll add an update so that they can stay connected. I for some reason recall a video where the reviewer said it would disconnect and reconnect as you turn on and off the headphones.
            Won't know till it arrives though haha. Ordered a TaoTronics BA07 before I knew it had Bluetooth built in, so if it doesn't work well I'll use that instead. I'd imagine the built in one would have less latency though, or some kind of sync up delay on the video?

                @bozbargain: I got my Chromecast a few days ago and yeah it's pretty bad isn't it!

                Honestly I'm not that impressed with my TaoTronics BA07 either, the delay is significantly less but it seems to cut out the audio everytime the sound in the movie/show goes quiet and then it takes a sec to kick back on so I end up missing the first word of every line a character speaks. I'll have to look into the issue a bit more, also a ppears to send across some noise which is kinda annoying. Not the cheapest either.

                  @Castcore: I’ve played around with the ‘Group Delay Correction’ in the Google Home app based on some recommendations I found online but that doesn’t seem to do anything either. A real shame as I do like the remote and the ease of use in general, the fact that Windscribe works as well is great if you want to watch Netflix in other regions.

                @joshr1pp3r: That’s a bit harsh, but yes, it’s cheaper to upgrade a Chromecast than to upgrade your TV. Also, my 2017 Sony Bravia does have Bluetooth but not allowing audio-out pairing. Not sure if it’s a Google or Sony restriction but very annoying.

              @isthisreallife22: I have 3 TVs and none have Bluetooth. Not everyone upgrades their TV's every year. I still enjoy the nice Crisp Blacks of my nice 10 year old Panasonic Plasma TV. Not looking forward to when it dies as I was looking in stores recently at LCD's. They still show Blacks as dark greys especially on lower end ones. Am happy to pay for the extra power consumption of Plasma screen.

              @isthisreallife22: To answer your question about pairing to the dongle instead of the TV from a different perspective: Pairing directly to the device with the audio source is likely going to have the lowest latency and knock off those few ms it takes to get to the TV's Bluetooth transmitter.

              Also technically being an android device (the Chromecast) it might also delay the video stream ever so slightly as to counter any audio delays. That's just speculation though as that's what my phone does!

          Was wondering if Bluetooth output, recommended my brother pick one up to use with his projector, which only had an optical sound output. Would be handy to Bluetooth to a soundbar Or BT speaker.

          I wouldn't mind one but got a 1080p android tv, and Netflix Brazil. Gift voucher may be ok. The only thing that would be worthwhile would be the remote as my Sony remote doesn't have the mic but the next model up did. Also I've got optical out of the TV to a DAC and don't have any remote volume control over it so it actually could be good.

          So basically can you control the volume with the chromecasts vol before it's optical out - may test my old chromecast now.

          Also these are in the shops for $99, only saving $50 on the bundle if you will use the netflix credit, or $15 if buy from google.
          If you could use the netflix credit for a gift card and apply to a different zone account may be alright

            @G-rig: ps. The wifi is pretty fn annoying on this 2015 Bravia, you can't connect to the wifi channels when the ethernet cable is plugged hence lose casting ability half the time. Perhaps this is normal but the router is right behind the telly so seemed reasonable to plug it in?

            @G-rig: Mine hasn't arrived yet, but I'll be using it with my projector too and boy am I excited. Look into Kodi and real-debrid, (disclaimer: I definitely don't do this..) you'll probably scrap Netflix Brazil if you go down that avenue, cus any movie or show for <$5AUD per month.

            If you know someone that uses Netflix and pays Australian price, ask them if they want $95 of credit for $60-$70. That way you can get the Chromecast with Netflix and save $20-$30 and they can also save some money off their Netflix bill.

            I don't think the Chromecast will be able to control your optical audio system. It'll only work if turning the volume up and down on your TV changes the volume on the optical audio system and your TV supports HDMI CEC. If you have to control the optical audio system with a seperate remote or dial and it doesn't have HDMI ARC or something similar then it won't be possible.

              @Castcore: Yeah it's all a bit of a pain this DAC not having a remote and vol control, but not and issue with the Chomecast audio streaming as the app/phone/pc controls it fine. Optical out of that sounds brilliant and cleaner than my good bluetooth receiver hard to know if AptX is ever made available or not.

              It's a shame they are discontinuing Google Play Music, not much of a fan of Youtube music so far and the bloody chromecast button is missing if trying to use if from your PC (the mobile app is fine). That and it stops playing after current selection, doesn't remember recent radio plays as well. They probably intend to charge everyone for another tier despite having Youtube Premium. Contacted support once shouldn't be hard to enable casting ffs.

              Tidal is brilliant SQ, $24 per month is a bit much for Hifi, but the MQA sounds super clean with MQA (got an iFi Zen Dac+headphone amp for the pc setup). Need to hook that up with a vpn for cheap doesn't seem to work yet

    For anyone wondering if you can use the 6 months Netflix on your foreign Netflix account - nope. I just tried with my Turkish one and it said it couldn’t be used with that account (which uses my gmail address).

    Also it only has the 7, 9 & ABC catchup tv channels.

          Second this. SBS is 100% there. You can also remove Disney+ and Stan and other apps you might not use. I didn't choose them in the setup but they installed anyway.

      My Netflix on The android TV still showing as Australia despite the subscription, so don't know if it matters and all content/list is still there. I've also got Nord VPN installed on it, was working to watch other regions just have to start the app again after, although Will have to test it again, some Netflix version apps don't like it and people were uninstalling to use the out of the box version.

      Wonder if the Google TV plays other regions when running your VPN app too, shouldn't be any different?

      You mean the HDMI control? If you've set it up with your Sony, then you have to rerun the set up to map the remote to the Soniq

    I have a LG C7 which doesn't have Google Assistant. Anyone know whether this can turn on the TV? I'm assuming not. I'm currently using Harmony to turn on the TV, so this would allow me further voice control for netflix etc.

      If the TV has HDMI control which im pretty sure that TV does (its called simlink?), then yes the Chromecast can turn it on and off. If that fails the Chromecast remote has IR built into it and you can program it to turn devices on and off the old fashioned way

          Should be fine for any online streaming content, and for local playback, I remember being able to play medium bitrate (around 45Mbps) blu-ray remuxes on the Vodafone TV which was also 100Mbps ethernet.

    Just checking if someone with a Philips Hue Play can use this to sync the lights with what is being shown? It's either buy that ridiculously expensive sync box, or watch using a PC that is connected to your TV from what I gather - maybe this can do the PC part but it way easier to power up with a remote than having to bother with a PC? I'm on a Sony X95G so it's already smart, but would like to use the functionality of the Hue Play lights.

      only used it for a moment last night however super interesting fact, the remote has a IR Blaster, during setup it goes through a series of IR options for manufacture model to allow you to turn the TV on/off and adjust volume direct from remote. Good if you don't have HDMI-CEC abilities which I presumed the volume button had to work with.

      Apart from that super snappy, works fine with the Android TV Android app for qwerty keyboard input via mobile phone (great for passwords when signing into everything initially).

      If you go back a page there are some tips on changing your wifi channel to make it work. It's only a makeshift solution though; it needs to be patched from Google's end.
      I'm actually surprised this isn't experienced by more people in this thread; wonder why only some people have trouble seeing 5GHz on their unit?
      Some similar complaints on Chromecast support page. Hope they fix it.

      My understanding is that NBA League Pass app for Android TV is region locked, but if you goto the play store via browser you can use the standard NBA LP app which isn't region locked

    Does anyone know if the Chromecast TV can more than one SSID? I'd like to be able to use at home via router and in my campervan via hotspot. It's a minor PITA to keep resetting the network on the old chromecast. I could use the same SSID for my hotspot as my router I guess.

      Not sure yet…doubt it though. Just adjust the WiFi when away Or rename the caravan WiFi Hotspot (if your own) the same as your Home.

    Can anyone confirm when once paired whether it will detected bluetooth automatically, or have to enable in setting each time?
    I've got a yamaha BT receiver that i can run to DAC+speakers that I'm keen to get volume control from. Currently no control over optical out of the telly (besides a manual main vol control). It's fine when casting audio etc to my CC Audio. Obviously this won't help free to air viewing but don't bother with speaker much for that.

    The built in chromecast on my 2015 Bravia may not continue getting updates, and the casting fails a bit once I plug in the ethernet cable (cannot connect to wifi networks. It sounds like that ethernet adaptor would be good for a fixed connection and also receiving casting from various devices over both 2.4 and 5GHz networks?

    Couldn't wait for my Google store delivery, cancelled it and picked one for JB HIFI in Castle Hill NSW.

    Asked if they could a bit better than rrp and they dropped the price to $91. YMMV.

      You have to sideload by downloading the apk, using a sideload launcher, enabling developer mode and the install from unknown sources - but it does work - I have Microsoft Edge and Firefox working. Although it helps to use a Bluetooth mouse to navigate as the browsers are not optimised for Android TV. There is a browser on the Android TV play store but I preferred the majors.

        Better just plugging The PC into the TV for a better browsing experience, if the PC is nearby. I got a 5m HDMI cable and it acts as a second monitor. Easy with a Bluetooth couch keyboard like the k830.

        Still wouldn't mind one though, the built-in Chromecast bit clunky sometimes

    After hours of troubleshooting with tech support, finally decided to return for a refund… and gosh the return process is a huge pain in the neck. Lots of confusing forms to fill out, no clear instructions on how exactly to deal with the courier to arrange shipping back to some third party business in Hong Kong… They should really just let you return to Google via Auspost then send it on to an overseas warehouse themselves if they want to.

          Sounds like you had a bad experience there. I usually prefer to purchase from the Google store (phones have longer warranty, or did, this device 1y though), I had to send a phone back under warranty and was very straight forward. After talking with support to confirm the fault they send a new one out and email instructions. Just had to print a label and send old one back, postage was covered IIRC.

          Ps I've got an original Chromecast couldn't even connect it to this TV anymore probably not worth anything

          PPS just realised the 15$ credit from Google store has ended, may as well go to jb hi-fi
