Buy a (Fully Stocked) Qantas 747 Drinks Cart - Half Cart from $974.70 or Full from $1474.70 (or Pay with Qantas Points) @ Qantas

2820

Just such an unusual once off sale we published on our website this morning that I had to share it here too. As Qantas has retired all their 747s, they're selling off their drinks carts. Fully stocked. Their release below:

Qantas is opening its memorabilia storage shed to the Australian public, offering 1000 Qantas 747 galley carts stocked with a range of items from champagne and Australian red and white wine to Tim Tams, PJs and an exclusive-to-Qantas First Class Sheridan throw.

The bar carts were removed from the airline’s recently retired and much-loved 747 aircraft before they were flown to the Californian desert.

Qantas operated various incarnations of the 747 “Queen of the Skies” for almost 50 years before retiring the jumbo jet six months early as part of its response to the COVID-19 crisis. The farewell of the last Qantas 747 in July inspired an outpouring of affection and nostalgia from the Australian public.

Qantas Executive Manager of Product and Service, Phil Capps, said the airline wanted to offer up a unique opportunity for enthusiasts to own a physical piece of the 747 legacy, particularly at a time when travel was out of reach for many.

“These pre-loved carts served Qantas and our customers well during their world travels from London and Los Angeles to Singapore and Santiago, with each one averaging around 2,000 flights. While we no longer have use for them, they still have life in them, especially for those with an appreciation for aviation collectables and an eye for design.

“There has been huge demand for Qantas 747 memorabilia and Frequent Flyers have expressed keen interest to convert the bespoke inflight trolley into everything from lamp stands to storage units. The fact they come fully stocked with some of Qantas’ most popular on-board service items will hopefully inspire some high-flying fun at home.”

Mr Capps added, “We know people have been ordering Qantas Wine to enjoy at home and our Qantas ‘iso care kits’ featuring the PJs sold out within hours. The bar carts offer the trifecta of wine, PJs and a piece of aviation history.”

The 747 half bar cart features:

A Qantas 747 half bar cart
40 mini bottles white wine and 40 mini bottles of red wine & 1 bottle of Champagne from the Business class cellar
2 Qantas Business Class amenity kit featuring ASPAR Travel Essentials
1 Sheridan throw made exclusively for Qantas First Class made of 100% combed cotton
2 Qantas Business Class sleeper suits M/L & L/XL (suitable for most shapes and sizes)

Half bar carts will cost $974.70 including delivery (or 169,000 Qantas Points). A small number of full size carts will be available with double the items for $1474.70 including delivery (or 256,000 Qantas Points). Delivery to metro locations in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth only.

The Qantas 747 carts will be on sale today via https://wine.qantas.com/

Not gonna fit into my Cessna 172

  • +2

TBH I didn’t expect the used cart is also a part of the sale.

    I mean… just… Wow

  • +2

P.S. does not include rude flight staff. Picture of a beautiful flight attendant is only for demonstration purposes

    • Q staff have always been nice to me. They’re not horrible like Virgin staff…

      • +1

Obviously you haven’t flown Olympic Airways back in the day….

    • +1

Do you fly Qantas? I don't think I've ever had a rude or even 'beautiful' flight attendant. I actually give Qantas kudos for not simply hiring made-up, young women like most budget airlines. Their flight staff can be young or old, but is usually middle-aged men and women of every colour.

  • +13

Does it include the usual bump on the shoulder/elbow experience?

  • +2

No rock hard ice cream, no deal.

Next Qantas will be selling the carpet from the planes

Waiting for the new Business class seat to go on sales!

  • +2

How much a 747 cost with full tank of fuel ?…got some space in backyard, seriously thinking of ..

    • +1

haha you might get to buy one for Christmas :D

  • i think soon they going sell tickets for just sitting in plane and to enjoy chaotic experience to get to airport

  • Buy a (Fully Stocked) Qantas 747…………………

    I was thinking, how much?

  • +1

I would genuinely buy this but it doesn't ship to my location.

  • +2

Why would they park the 747s in a desert in America instead of selling them? They must have some value. Also, don't we have enough desert in Australia to park them in?

    • +3

It is cheaper to hire Americans to maintain the parked planes. So much for calling Australia home.

    • You still need an airport to land them at, in the desert.

      They must have some value

Probably only at a museum. I don't think you can salvage parts easily, economically and safely.

    • +1

There are heaps parked at Alice Springs but they ran out of space. There was a proposal in the 90s I think to have a bone yard for aircraft in the red centre but tribal elders, Labor and the Greens didn't want it, so the idea never made it past a feasibility study.

As for value - only scarp value for spares.

    • +3

      1) Lack of humidity parking them in a desert.

      2) Now you could argue 'why not park them in Alice when other airlines are doing so?'

Qantas are retiring these aircraft rather than putting them away in storage. Some of them might be scrapped. The Asia Pacific Aircraft Storage (APAS) company in Alice only store planes, not scrap them. The boneyard in the US has the technical capability of scrapping these aircraft.

      3) Parts market in the US is probably the biggest in the world, so easier to put the parts on the marketplace. Same goes for putting the retired aircraft on sale. Technicians are on-site or can easily access the site.

    • Honestly, and this is coming from a true av geek who loves the 747, they have no value these days. Thats why they go to the boneyard - to be cut into keychains and mementos.

      • How can they have no value… there must be third world countries, start up airlines etc who would love to get ahold of a mid 90s 747 for dirt cheap.

        • What would "third world countries" use them for?
These things take a lot of money to fly and maintain; some of those countries can't afford the electricity to run air-conditioning in hospitals.

          • +1

@GG57: They'd use them for their national airlines, of course. To replace their ageing 707s/727s or whatever old Soviet era junk they still use.

            • @AussieZed: Would their airport runways need an upgrade as well?

    • +1

Generally aircraft are owned by leasing companies rather than owned. They would have been retired progressively as they come off leases (looks like these last ones were owned by GE Leasing). 747s are very inefficient airlines and as seen over the past few years, after a massive race to have A380s and Dreamliners, etc. the focus is on smaller, more fuel efficient, airplanes, etc. Note, there is a "boneyard" in Alice Springs. Just usually used to source parts etc. nowadays. https://www.news.com.au/travel/travel-advice/flights/inside-…

    • -1

United States of America - we must copy them at all costs!

  • Each Qantas Boeing 747 bar cart has flown around 15 million kilometres.source

    • +1

I would buy one if it came with frequent flyer points.

  • Damn…delivery to select metro areas only. That rules me out.

  • I’ll take a helipad thanks

  • +1

This is a weird one, but interesting. Not my cup of tea for the $ but I'm sure there will be some interest in the ozb community. This is one of those things that as weird as it is it will sell out almost immediately.

  • Unprecedented !

  • +1

What in the world do you do with this once you get it home? Store it in the living room and pretend you're on a plane whilst sitting on your sofa?

  • +18

Going to get one and invite friends over to watch a movie they don't want to see, Seat them behind my reclining lounge chairs (so I can recline back into them) then have my Son offer them drinks from this. As he serves it he can shout "turbulence" and spill the mixer over them.
If I am smart I can plan it on a night when we are babysitting my grandson and hope he whines and cries before he goes to sleep.
Thanks Op for theme party idea.

    • +1

I think I’ve been on those flights.
You need keeping them awake for 24 hours and the weird smelling cramped toilet to complete the effect.

  • +2

I think they should bring in emojis/emoticons in ozb. There should be a lol one 😆

  • I'm just thinking how bruised and battered those trolleys are. Who'd want that? An airline themed restaurant?

  • Any 747 plane come with Drinks Cart?

  • Honest question, would this have a decent level of radiation?

    • +1

Honest answer, no. Because the radiation that is experienced comes from cosmic rays and not from a radioactive substance or nuclear reaction.

  • Now I just need a uniform…

  • +1

    half carts sold out

  • +1

Out of stock when you try to checkout

  • S.O. would kill me… and I would like to live to see Christmas.

  • +1

Most of these will just end up sitting in people's garages gathering dust.

  • This will be a cool thing to convert into a homelab or some sort of all in one entertainment system

  • Great deal OP. I'm about to release my first music video and it will be very handy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GdPuDgvg4hM

  • These carts usually sell for at least a thousand or two (used) as memorabilia alone. Depending on where you look, the shipping is what gets you.
Also depends on whether you get a rubbish bin or a food trolley etc.

  • Now if only they were selling the carts on their own without all the gimmicks.

Anyone have a source for bog stock 737 half service carts?

  • +5

Are they selling the flight attendant uniforms? I’m asking for a friend who likes role playing.

    • +1

Gunna say that's a long shot because airport security and stuff

    • You too can dress like an neopolitan icecream!

    • +3

      Size 20? ;)

    • lol.
Well on a related note they are (were?) selling child or toddler sized uniforms in their terminal frequent flyer store way back.

  • +1

$1.4 million in revenue generation. Good work Qantas.

  • +3

This how that guy from Inception bought the airline. He started with the drink carts.

    • +1

And they were flying to Sydney!

      • LMAO! true dat.

  • Wow, they are even selling the chairs off the plane!

    Professional… lol

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Qantas-Boeing-747-400-Premium-Ec…

    • I really hope at least some of this stuff has been sanitised before getting to the customer's home. But seeing as we're in Australia, I doubt its really been cleaned.

      • +1

Lol, yeah absolutly - I remember booking a up front seat with extra leg room on a flight from Hawaii to Melbourne, only to find I couldn't physcially sit in the middle seat as two north american sized (generalising but true) guys was flanking me left and right - i felt like a sardine and found another seat.

Do i really want to be sitting where tens of thousands of people have sat their before - yeah nah I'll pass

  • Nooo missed out :(

  • I am going to take one of these as carry-on on my next trip. Then, mid flight, wheel it up and down and selling drinks. But undercut the inflight service by half price.

It will pay for itself and the trip. Get some duty free on the return trip for next time. Nice.

  • Is the stewardess for sale?

  • +1

If it had a fridge this would be cool, but since its just a shelf with wheels sounds a bit pointless

  • I'm going to use this when I play Flight Simulator 2020.

  • +1

I don't think its too much of a bargain .
Guess they got more with their publicity machine than a liquidator :)

  • +1

A first class seat will be great addition to MSFS 2020 experience, lol

  • Genuine question for those wanting to buy one. What are you going to do with it? (the trolley I mean … the drinks I can figure out by myself)
Will it go on display in your bar/pool room/mancave? Will it take pride of place in your loungeroom? Will you just keep it for a few years and hope it appreciates in value?

    • +4

Get the missus to wheel it into the flight sim cockpit when the captain needs refreshments

      • Hahaha, that's a great idea.

  • +4

Thumbs up for the fun deal. Not going to buy one but reading this brought a smile.

    • Came here for the comments and not disappointed.

  • OOS ROFL

  • Damn I missed out!

I had these guys do cocktails at my party - www.trolleyd.com They used the old Ansett carts and were awesome

  • +1

OK. Now I have a cart. Any deals on a 747 (used, not new)?

  • -2

If they chuck in a hostie I'll take 2

    • +1

Aussie airlines use a lot of male hosties…Be careful what you wish for haha.

      • +4

I'll take what I can get

  • It comes with smoked peanuts guys. Seems like a pretty good bargain. Anyone wanna split the cost?

  • Thanks OP. Got one.

  • +1

Woke up this morning, got a notification on my phone, and half-awake - impulse bought one. This is the closest to a plane I'll ever get for the next year or two! Fond memories of sitting in an aisle seat, trying to sleep, being severely injured by these things. Going to use it to store bottle of booze and glasses, freeing up the space in the pantry where they're currently kept, thus placating the wife. Need to grab some vintage travel stickers to really complete it.

Kind of annoyed that I'm just short of points club plus membership - had a few friends get another $80 off.

  • No RRP negs? Insane

  • Yep secured one.
    Very happy with that.

  • +1

It's scratched to sht in the picture. At least they're honest!

  • My price is $300 for the full and $200 for the 1/2 .
I think they conned some people with the full cart of goodies that worth hardly anything :)

    • +1

Quite a few selling for $500 on ebay if your really interested in getting one

      • +2

        I see them .
Don't tell the poor guys that bought this that though lol .

  • +1

Going to save my points to buy a jet instead. I'm pretty sure they will be an upcoming Qantas store purchase.

  • So without jobkeeper funding to add to general reveue so execs get bonus, they are selling stuff to meet the next quarter reports and get another bonus …..?

  • there's all this alcohol included but I can't find a spirit of Australia. I'll look into Rex.

  • Waiting for the next stock …
