@Bren86: I have ordered 2x16gb sticks of Kingston 3200mhz for $220 total from Scorptec. I wanted to keep the same memory speed as I’ll be doing some gaming…

Also purchased a Kingston 1TB nvme Drive from centrecom for $160, and a 32” gigabyte g32qc monitor for $599.

My order is still being processed so once everything arrives I’ll do some benchmarking and reviews if you like.

            Cheers

            • @MarcusJones: For productivity, such as video edit etc..then you may need 32GB RAM, otherwise, it's a bit of a waste for gaming. I actually downgraded my desktop RAM from 32GB to 16GB, after having it for 6months.

              • +2

                @kml22: Hi KML22,

You are correct about memory for gaming. However I am an IT engineer working as a sole trader… so basically I build multiple VMs for testing/learning which needs heaps of memory. Secondly, I effectively get 47% off whatever I spend as a tax and gst reduction… so I figure the memory upgrade is costing me around $120 (after tax benefits) and I should be able to sell the 2x 8gb sticks for maybe $70? So basically it’s a $50 upgrade from 16 to 32GB.

Finally, I just sold my original XPS 17” after 9 years of use, so figure this laptop might last me 5+ years… so a bit of futureproofing isn’t a bad thing.

But yes, for anyone considering upgrading to 32GB solely for games it may not be worth it…

                Cheers

              • @kml22: why? was it slower to run 32gb or price per GB wasn't worth it?

            • @MarcusJones: Thanks for the info on the ram. I’ll be keen to know the benchmarks when it arrives. Cheers.

            • @MarcusJones: Was this the RAM that you ordered from Scorptec?

              Kingston KVR32S22D8/16 1x16GB 3200MHz DDR4 SODIMM

Just playing that complimentary Free Troy Total War game from Epic Game Store on the Dell G7.

Everything on default ultra settings is buttery smooth and looks fantastic. i'm really impressed.
    CPU @ 80* GPU @ 80* on balance thermals

It'll be worth the wait when it comes for those waiting.

    • -1

80C? wow, what are you using to measure the temp?
Try it on performance mode, lets see the temp? I reckon it will be 90C+.

      • -1

just the inbuilt alienware sensor software

  • Ive ordered one of those Kingston A2000 1TB nvme drives to go into the dell G7 laptop as storage.

before it arrives next week i thought i would open the laptop to investigate to see if the m.2 slot comes with the screw anchor.

Well, opening the laptop, is the most easiest i've come across. Simply unscrew the 8 screws and the back cover comes straight off and you have easy access. No need of prying open the back and hoping the plastic doesnt snap….So that was a big plus.

Now the slot where the 2nd m.2 nvme fits, I see the screw slot there to anchor in the m.2 nvme drive in , but no damn screw!! hmm. maybe the nvme drive will come with the screw? Otherwise, i guess i'll undo a non crucial screw in the laptop and just use one of the many screws holding the battery down and use it for the 2nd nvme m.2 drive. Come on dell, would of cost you 1 cent for that tiny small screw.

Haha, we got confirmation that TW Troy is garbage, our mate jt0505t got bored in a few hours.
Btw, thanks for the info about the 2nd drive.

      • haha, yeah once you've played a couple of Total War Games, you've played them all! Lasted a few hours you are correct!

      • I wouldn't say it's garbage, just a different type of games.
Back in the day, Total War was awesome, I guess it's the same style of game, so nothing to get excited about. Still bloody good for Free during that 24hrs promotion.

        • haha, it was an over-exaggeration. I have been a fan since the first Rome and stopped playing after Shogun 2. Went back to 3 kingdoms, but it is not longer the same. Now it is completely arcade, deployment doesn't matter anymore, it was a pleasure to play Napoleon, and graphics are awful with troy….wish they can redo Rome 1 with better graphics.
But yeah, definitely good for free!

I was miffed that there was no screw or heat spreader too for the second NVME drive. I tried using a spare screw like you suggested, but the hole there isn't deep enough without the adapter! I ended up taking the spreader off the first drive and using that to hopefully hold the second drive in place…

      • +1

I wonder how other people deal with this problem. Can we buy those screws online?

      • +1

thats clever… my a2000 nvme drive should arrive this afternoon. I'll install it tomorrow. I'll do the same what you do if i cant find a replacement screw to pinch from the laptop somewhere.

        • I put in the same A2000 drive.

The thermal pad on the spreader does have some tack to it, which I hope will help. I did wonder later if the now-unused standoff from the original NVME spreader location in that pic could be moved to the new NVME screw location. But there is literally like 0mm depth under the hole without that moveable adaptor when I tried.

Interested to see what you find.

Ok another update on undervolting for those who care:

Ethan Carey from the YouTube video posted on one of the first few pages of this deal has confirmed that undervolting is not possible straight out of the box. He thought it was working in Throttlestop but turns out it wasn't changing anything because it's disabled in the bios (hence why he saw no temp changes).

However, another user on Reddit has found a way to modify the bios to unlock undervolting. If you're up for giving it a crack, here's the link.
Make sure you read the OP's post very carefully and then look at VanGoghComplex's comment on how it applies to the G7 7700.

    https://www.reddit.com/r/Dell/comments/fzv599/comment/g03uxx…

This is classified as an advanced mod, so don't try it if you're not confident in your abilities to follow the guide, making a mistake here can brick the laptop.
As obvious, I take no responsibility if you've done any damage to your system.

    • Thanks for doing the research! There is an new update on the delivery status , changed again from ETA 21/09 to now

      Estimated Delivery Date: Order Shipped
Status: Shipped - In transit to local hub

Will try this technique once I got my hands on the laptop.

      • seems to be ok to do (from reading the thread) instructions look pretty clear!

will be interested in how you go!

    • I wonder if it will make the laptop vulnerable to plundervolt?

      • Plundervolt requires a physical connection to the computer to be utilised.. so unless you plan on taking your laptop somewhere that exposes you to having someone physically access your laptop to utilise the vulnerability… I don't think it's of much concern.

    • Do we even need this? Thermals seem pretty ok in previous posts

      • The lower your thermals, the longer the laptop will last. While ~85C is acceptable by today's standards, it'll still significantly shorten the life of the laptop.

        • Cool, it makes sense for that reason….looking forward to hearing about your results!

  • I missed this deal but am looking at what I believe to be the same laptop here on the Dell website for $2449, deal ends tomorrow the 20th

    https://www.dell.com/en-au/shop/dell-laptops/dell-g7-17-gami…

Can anybody tell me what happens to the laptop and its current discounted price when the deal ends, do I wait and could it become cheaper?

    • +1

The price will go back to $3,499.00.

You could wait, no one knows if it and when it will become cheaper. I would never pay full price at dell.

      • I don't think I'd get this laptop at $2500 or higher. There are better options at that price in my opinion.
I would personally go down to a RTX 2060 and get a better quality laptop from the likes of Aftershock PC or something like that.

  • Just got mine delivered, will play with it later tonight after work. Pleasantly surprised it arrived sooner then expected considering I ordered it in the last hour of the deal.

  • Mine turned up somewhat randomly this morning but the site still shows an estimated delivery window of Thursday 27 Aug 2020 - Friday 4 Sep 2020.

  • Mine just arrived. Received the Star Track Consignment the day before.

  • +1

If anyone is interested, My GPU can run Furmark for ages and does not throttle. If I run the CPU burner in Furmark My CPU gets up to 86 degrees and runs at 4+ ghz but after about 5 minutes it maxed at 3.6ghz which I assume is part of the thermal design. This is a much better result than the G7 7790 I got from a previous deal as the GPU throttled on that after a few minutes and its all over when that happens in-game!

    • +1

nice to hear, thanks for sharing.

    • i get pretty similar.

Wonder if its still worth undervolting?

I'm thinking about not doing it, until my warranty is out :P

      • undervolting should stop the CPU from throttling at 3.6ghz. but yeah, it's up to you if you want to wait it out. I think I'll give it a go in a week or so. I just want to make sure there are no faults with the laptop before I go through the effort.

        • I'll be interested in hearing the results. Although it's likely I won't even be attempting to try it.

          • @jt0505t: I'll let you know how I go as I'm planning on going ahead with modding the BIOS so I can undervolt. Just having issues formatting a USB to be FAT32 and writing an MBR :\

  • +3

Just Received Mine! Loving it so far

    • yeah its an awesome machine.I can't find any faults so far in my opinion (having it for a week). Although i'm sure there are that people will point out.

      • Sam here, so far so good :)
Haven't tried running any games yet though

  • First tracking update in a week….now moved from the 8th September to "ETA of Between 09/09/2020 And 10/09/2020."… :-/

  • Mine got updated to this today….

Your Dell Order No 8***) has an ETA of Between 16/08/2020 And 17/08/2020. Call customer support on 1 800 812 393, If you would like our friendly agents to help you resolve an issue with your order.

Guess it's only a couple of days late

  • :( Did not receive it today. My tracking showed that delivery was attempted today but item had incorrect address. Perhaps mine got delivered to the wrong Mel address.

    • Oh that's not good at all…

    • Received invoice for the laptop and found why it was not delivered. Dell did not include the street number and name. The suburb name was entered instead. Hoping Dell will sort their problem quickly.

  • Do we have the forum post for this yet guys?

    • i think this is it….

    • +3

I have created this one if people want to start posting experience and tips, I think it will be better to have a single place to get all the info:

      Forum post

Please let me know, I can edit and add info at request

      • +5

I've just added in a full guide to unlock undervolting. It was a bit tedious getting the info from multiple places so I thought I'd put it all together in one place for anyone else who wants to try it out.

      • +1

Great Job mate! on the guide.

I'm glad to those people who already received their laptop and enjoying it so far. Fantastic piece of gaming machine for the price.

        • I gotta say it again - thanks for recommending this laptop after the G15 SE fiasco… It really is an awesome machine, especially after dealing with that piece of sh*t lol

  • Anyone who bought this Dell G7 and need Microsoft Office 365?
I will be purchasing a 12 month Family account for up to 6 users. There are 3 spots left..
$19 per user for 12 months.
You can extend after 12 months aswell.

Anyone else received theirs earlier than expected lately? I'm trying to convince myself that mine will get here earlier than the predicted 9th September tracking date. :-0

    • +2

Mine arrived Wednesday 19/08 when the ETA was also 09/09. I hope yours comes early too :)

      • +2

It is really a lottery. My ETA is 2/9 but still no tracking details. Probably still on the water… I am just trying to forget I ordered a laptop and waiting for the surprise. :-)

        • +2

My ETA has just been updated to 18-19 Aug. LOL Dell.

          • +3

@bypeng: My ETA just has updated to 19/8 - 20/8
            But today 22. Lol.

          • +2

@bypeng: My ETA got updated to the 18-19 Aug as well. Still don’t have any tracking details yet tho. I rang up the Dell 1800 number & went through the automated service, it said my laptop is due for delivery on the 25 Aug. We’ll see lol

            • @Bren86: My has been another updated this morning to 25/08- 26/08.
              So annoying :(

              • +1

@Domdabush: Mine got updated with the same ETA, but I’ve now got a startrack connote which says delivery will be tomorrow. I’m getting excited!!

        • Mine did the same. Tomorrow is the day!

          • +2

@bypeng: I was a bit sceptical about the delivery date too - but if Startrack say's it'll come tomorrow, I'd trust it.
That's exactly what mine did and it was accurate :)
            Dell's tracking is abysmal

            • @Dipaty: From no updates for weeks, to ETA moving to mid September, to ETA moving to a day in the past (as above) to now having Startrack tracking finally showing in the dellppleportal (Dell website still has nothing except "in transit to local hub") as ETA tomorrow the 25/08.
Fingers crossed. Its within the original timeframe of when I bought it.

Bought the Kingston A2000 1TB from Centrecom to add as a secondary drive today so have to wait for that to arrive.

              • +1

@Subere: That's exactly what happened to me lol
It's part of the Dell Experience XD
Just note that the laptop doesn't come with a screw or bracket for the 2nd M2 SSD slot. You can get away with using just a screw but you'll have to buy one from ebay/amazon or a computer store.

                • @Dipaty: Yeah I've been keeping across this thread and the thread in the forums about it. Disappointing something as basic as a screw isn't included. And I'm guessing an m.2 screw will be different to the bunch of other desktop screws I'll have lying around for PCI cards etc

                • @Dipaty: Do you only need one screw for the SSD or a spacer underneath as well?

                • +1

@Dipaty: i had to take the heat spreader from the OS nvme drive to the newly added a2000 1TB nvme to hold it down… works a treat.

                  • @jt0505t: Great! Do you have a photo to share?

                    • +1

@bypeng: there is someone in this thread posted the idea and a picture.

                      https://imgur.com/a/2MiIhqe

mine looks exactly the same. the Dells m.2 drive is half size which i haven't seen before..

                      • @jt0505t: So there is no screw to hold the SSD only a bracket to cover it. I hope Dell will sent us the proper kit for it.

                        • +1

@bypeng: correct. The bracket does the job tho. You'll know what i mean if you choose to do it.

                  • @jt0505t: I guess this could be the interim solution until Dell send the kit if we ring them and request one.

  • +1

Also guys, when you get your laptops - make sure to have a look at the forum thread we have going for this model.
There's a lot of really useful info there - for tweaking and improving overall stability / performance.
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/559551

    • Yeah will do. Still not sure if I’ll do the tweak to undervolt the laptop, guess I’ll see how it performs out of the box & go from there

      • +1

Fair enough, I would highly suggest doing the GPU undervolt though - it fixes a lot of stability issues, especially for long periods of gaming (more than 1hr).
But in saying that, you might be one of the lucky ones who get a laptop that's super stable straight out of the box.

  • +3

For those who are going to put another SSD in (which I presume most people).

The second SSD M2 slot is missing the mounting bracket and the heat spreader (plus screws). I contacted Dell about this and they recommended contacting the Service dept on: 1300 655 533. Make sure you have a picture of your G7's missing M2 Bracket/Heat spreader. They will get you to send them an email with this pic and they will request approval to send you a replacement kit with the bracket and heat spreader.

The Dell Service manual for this machine states that it should include brackets and spreaders as part of the package. Not sure why they didn't send this out since it's not a readily available part you can buy from your local computer store.

    • Nice find!

    • Reading the manual and it could be interpreted that the bracket is only included if the SSD2 slot is populated.
But if Dell are happy to send us the kit, then I won't complain and will take them up on the offer.
      Thanks for the tip.

    • cool ok, I will make contact with them

    • Have you sent the photos to Dell yet? Did they agree to send you the kit? Dell support asked me the same thing.

      • I've sent mine through to them already with both the pic of my machine and a cutting from their service manual to show that is should have it by default. They were suppose to come back to me yesterday, but I fired an email off to them this morning to see where this is at. I think they might still be waiting approvals.

        • Great. Do you mind share your photos with us? Thanks.

        • Same, got two service requests for both laptops that are still at Open status. Hope they don't palm me off to call again.

          • @dynamite459: Anyone had any luck with Dell getting the parts for the second SSD? I had dramas with the person I spoke with saying that the parts only come with laptops configured with a second SSD. Tried pointing them to the service manual but they didn’t budge.

            • @Bren86: I called them a couple of days ago and they opened a ticket and I sent photos, haven't heard back yet. Was supposed to be updated within 24 hours. I'm thinking they probably won't supply, even if offering to pay for the parts.

              • @RockmanRock: Got this reply today:

"Based on our higher engineer's advise, with regard to your inquiry regarding a 2nd SSD bracket and screws, this option is only available for G7 models specifically ordered with 2 SSDs.

As your specific order only came with 1 SSD, the only SSD bracket that was included is the one securing the current Solid State drive, as per your order.

Dell will not be able to send you a 2nd SSD bracket if your system was only ordered with 1 SSD, however, if you would liek to add a 2nd SSD pucrashed from a 3rd party source, we can provide you with a billable quotation for the 2nd SSD bracket and screws.

If you would like to receive a billable quotation from us, simply reply to this email thread with your preferred service address, and we will send you the quote within 24-48 business hours."

                • @RockmanRock: What a rort, I wonder how much they would charge for it… My guess is around $40 - $60.
Let us know if you request the quote.

            • @Bren86: Here's the response I got from Dell:

I've receive an update from our technical engineers for this issue.

As per check, the SSD bracket his optional during the presale wherein a 2nd SSD is optional as well. If you want to have the SSD bracket for the 2nd SSD, the best resolution is to refer to any local IT shop near you. I believe they would be able to assist you to purchase this part. We're unable to quote this part and ship it to you as this is considered as small parts.

Hope you're advised and thank you for choosing Dell.

I managed to find a screw that's about an M2.5 with a 2.4mm thread x 5.8mm length. I then tap threaded the existing hole where the standoff would be. The end result looks like this.

Picking up a pack of thermal pads from Mwave to put on the SSD until I can source the correct parts.

              • @dynamite459: Hi @dynamite459 - trying to work out how you tap threaded the screw onto the existing hole for the SSD? Bought a kit but not sure how this will fit exactly with the screwing. Can you please give us some direction on how to do this? Thanks in advance..

  • I got the G7 think morning. Hooray! It is interesting there is a Adobe Lightroom shortcut on my desktop when I first turn it on. The program is not actually installed. I wonder if it happened to any of you. Has the laptop been used?

    • I have similar concerns, I have actually ordered multiple, the first batch 2 weeks ago had pristine boxes and weighted 4.85kg. The batch received today has bent boxes, notches in one of them and just feel like it has been mistreated, and weighs 4.7kg. So where does the difference come from?

    • my G7 did not have Adobe Lightroom, or any Adobe products. And my box was in pristine condition when delivered. Interesting comment above

      • My box was in good condition. Now I am thinking the adobe shortcut may come from my Microsoft ID profile from another machine. I wonder if it will sync those setting as well? But only one short cut though. Very strange.

        • My box had some damage on it but when I opened it the laptop was in pristine condition so I didn't really think much of it.
No shortcuts here on first boot, other than the recycling bin - which I immediately removed anyway.
Regarding the weight, if you're going off what was on the shipping label, I wouldn't think much into it. Mine says 2.98kg (which is obviously false) - I doubt they actually weight each box.

  • So today I got an update…it was "ETA of Between 09/09/2020 And 10/09/2020", but now it's "ETA of Between 20/08/2020 And 23/08/2020". I think that's a good thing even though that means it should have been delivered two days ago, and it's not here yet. :-0

    • Yeah that's a good sign, you should receive it within a few days.

  • Mine got delivered without Startrack ever updating the online tracking so I was pretty anxious all morning.

Weird thing though, my laptop had booted up into an existing account with "begga" (?).

After changing the AHCI, I went ahead with a factory reset and now working through the undervolting guide from the forum.
