@Jacko3000: As I stated before, laptop is set in RAID mode, do yourself a favour and change it to AHCI mode and reinstall windows 10, so you can later add the second NVMe drive.

            • @kml22: Great suggestion! Do I need a copy of Windows to reinstall? Or does the laptop have some sort of back up?

            • +4

@kml22: Should we set up a forum for general advice and tips? Like this one?
              https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/516502

              • @gustus: Please set one up!

                • @Jacko3000: Im still waiting for delivery today and im a newbie at this. I have no tips. Someone who knows what need to be done for initial setup do this plz >.<

            • +2

@kml22: I second this. Would love to see a guide on how we get to this. Have no idea about this. Thanks. Just received mine btw.

            • +1

@kml22: I haven't got the laptop yet so I haven't tried this personally but there are guides on youtube showing how to change from raid without reinstalling windows. It's like a 2 min job.

            • @kml22: Can you install the 2nd M.2 SSD as well as another 2.5 inch SSD at the same time? I have a spare 2.5 inch one around.

              • +1

@bypeng: No, it doesn't have spaces for 2.5" SSD, no space because of the battery. You can only use m.2 NVMe drive.

                • @kml22: Thanks. Do you know if the G7 can create an recovery media on a USB? Just in case the video above won’t work.

  • I just got mine. Just started the laptop and noticed the trackpad is quite loose and the right click a bit sticky. Anyone else have the same issue?

    • I just got mine and opened it. The trackpad doesnt feel loose to me

      • Thanks, possible that I got a dud one.

        • Actually after a few more tappings, i think my right side is slightly loose. This is my first dell/windows laptop (have been using mac) so i cant quite tell

          • @gustus: I have a HP (home) and Dell (work). Both trackpad feels firm, but the G7 I got seems a bit springy. With light push like scrolling pages, I can feel the trackpad up and down slight at the bottom part. With the HP and Dell laptop at work I don't have that issue.

            • @akte: I believe the new XPSs have the same issue, from Dave2D's videos.

              • @F1ProjectOne: That's a bit disappointing.
Thanks, love Dave2D, will have a look at it later.

            • @akte: This is my trackpad. Does anyone know this is an issue or just normal behaviour?
              http://imgur.com/a/bMhF7nZ

              • @gustus: I think yours are ok. Mine definitely much more loose than that.

                • @akte: My trackpad issue is similar to the one in video except more wobbly. It’s quite annoying with the clicky sound when scrolling.
                  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_C8oa8zkAE&feature=youtu.be…

                  • @akte: If it makes noise, i think you should contact dell for a replacement. Shouldnt pay 2k to receive a dud

                    • @gustus: Yeah I will definitely contact them, just wanted to do a bit more testing before that.

              • @gustus: Looks pretty normal to me (haven't received mine yet, but compared to my ThinkPad is normal)
Also, anyone is going to use it that much in a gaming laptop?

  • +3

Just received mine as well, didn't open it yet.

  • +4

Mine just arrived as i was leaving for work.

    • i bet mine is the only one that comes with a Max Q..

      • How do you check? I haven't check it yet.

        • +1

Gpu-z then check mhz. Boost should be above 1400.

          • @Jacko3000: Just checked, yes the boost is above 1400. But SSD and Ram ain't Samsung for me. Micron Ram and KIOXA SSD.

            • @akte: Assuming Samsung is better… I'm sorry to hear that mate.

            • @akte: Wow, I guess Dell source RAM and SSD all over the place. I wonder what other people are getting.

Can you take screenshot and show us? Is your RAM rated at 3200 but running at 2933?

        • I have a KIOXIA m.2 and micron ddr4 3200 running @ 2933

      • I betcha you're being paranoid. Of course it's the full RTX 2070 Mobile (Max P)

        • ha

        • @kml22 is your trackpad wobbly or solid?

          • @saveurmoney: Tiny bit loose at the bottom. I don't notice any issue using it.

  • +2

For people wants to add another ssd. Is WD Black a bit overkill? Would A2000 or WD Blue be fast enough? I don’t know too much about SSD.

    • +1

The current WD Black deal is a good one to jump on - you're getting a considerable speed boost for 10-20% more cost than the A2000 / WD Blue.
I personally would get one if I hadn't already purchased a Samsung 970 last month.
However in saying that, it really depends on what you'll be using it for. If it's only to store your games on or movies, etc then you probably won't notice a difference between the WD Black and the cheaper options.

      • +1

True, I'm using the Crucial P1 for storing game files and movies.

        • Thanks guys. Looks like I just need a good/reliable one with the largest capacity. 2T or more. Will wait for some deals in the coming days.

  • +2

    Hi guys,

Is anyone else getting a high pitched whine to their fan noise or is it just me?
When the fans kick in for me, it's like a bit like a vacuum, pretty unbearable.

Might be forced to return it, even though everything else is pretty great. With non-heavy work loads and disabled turbo boost, it's silent and has got great battery life in Eco mode.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VVQugP18M8I&feature=share

    • yes i hear the high pitched whine.

      • That's terrible

        • be honest, its the same as my previous asus laptop with a 1060. i dont know any different.

    • +2

It sounds pretty noisy, but you have a 2070 and an i7 inside, the fans better sound loud to get rid of the heat. Wouldn't trust it if there is little sound

  • +7

Switching from RAID to AHCI to have an additional m.2 drive for storage.

I can confirm this video has worked for me for this laptop without having to reinstall windows.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ngnIKqPOc4&feature=youtu.be

    Thanks to Jacko3000

    • +1

I did the same. Relatively easy and straight forward.

  • Anyone in Melbourne received theirs yet?

  • test.

  • Any one can recommend a 2TB M.2 SSD for the G7 with similar spec/quality as A2000? Thanks in advance…

    • Depends on how much you want to spend and what you want to use it for.
The WD Blue is on-par with the A2000 and can be found around $300 for the 2Tb option.

      • Thanks. I thought the Blue is much slower than A2000? 560MB/s vs 2200MB/s? Was hoping to find something with similar speed as A2000 around $300.

        • +1

Looks like you're looking at the wrong WD Blue. Make sure it's the NVMe version which has read speed: 2400MB/s and write: 1950MB/s.
I'm pretty sure it's actually faster than the A2000

          • @Dipaty: Thanks. You are right. There are two “WD Blue”. The SN550 one is faster but it does not come in 2TB, I think.

            • +1

@bypeng: Not sure if it's available cheaper anywhere else but here's a link to one:

              https://www.centrecom.com.au/western-digital-wd-blue-3d-nand…

              • @Dipaty: Thanks again. But this is the slower blue. Not the faster one you mentioned.

                • +1

@bypeng: that's true, well spotted - my mistake..
Looks like the SN550 doesn't come larger than 1TB. Cheapest alternative I could find is around the $400 mark, but at a higher speed too (3500/3000MB/s).

  • Has anyone replaced their existing M.2 SSD or added an additional one using the 2nd M.2 SSD slot?

I’m keen to know as I ordered two and plan to replace the existing SSD on one unit with the A2000 1TB and use the removed SSD into the other unit.

  • +6

I have just received mine. I'm in Melbourne. I think I was around the 100th to 105th order when I ordered. Delivery date was bang on time 12th Aug (to 20th Aug)
Excited! New laptop in 5 years!

    • Was the dell tracking on yours accurate?

      • The Dell tracking yesterday only said "shipped". It didn't say a delivery date.

        • Ah Awesome, that's what mine says. hope for me yet!

        • How long after it went to "shipped" did it take to arrive?

          • @schmuppet: overnight

            • @yellowfever: Did you get a shipping number or did it just turn up?

              • @schmuppet: I got a shipping number, it is from the 2nd Ebay email that says "ORDER UPDATE".
Then open https://www.dell.com/support/orders/au/en/audhs1 and enter the 87XXXXXX number.. This number is found on the ebay link above email. Once you are in eBay link, click on "show postage details" and then under tracking number you will see the 87XXXXXX number. It is not in the email itself.

                • @yellowfever: Mine says Arrives by: 8/09/2020….not even build complete yet.

                  • @jimbler: fair enough. there were 440 of these sold on eBay Aust. plus maybe even more worldwide elsewhere. Its worth the little extra wait!

                    • @yellowfever: I'm ok with that date, but the guy on the next page says his has been updated to "Estimated Delivery Date: 21/09/2020". I'm thinking mine will get bumped into October once the build is complete.

  • Anyone trying to get warranty after purchase? Is it more expensive?

  • +4

After a few hours of use… For those still keenly waiting…

Its a full 2070 max P. 1455mhz Boost. ( as already previously confirmed)
3dmark TimeSpy gave a respectable score of 7536.
    great screen
I dont have any issue with the track pad like some reporting.
fan noise isn't that bad when gaming especially when you have volume up at a fair level. Those that wear head phones well its almost irrelevant.
LED light bar is pretty cool

This laptop is pretty amazing. I'm very happy with the purchase for 2k.

    • Hows the temperatures on the CPU and GPU ?

      • +2

        On Balance Thermal Mode.

        Using Furmark 1.21
        CPU @ 80*
        GPU @ 85*
after 10 minutes in a room of about 19* and laptop on a desk.

then smashing that 'G' mode button on the Laptop turns all fans into rage/performance mode.
        Using Furmark 1.21
        CPU @ 76*
        GPU @ 81*
after 10 minutes in a room of about 19* and laptop on a desk.

        • That's actually… really good! I am surprised.

          • @j-scrizz: That 'G' button mode is interesting.

It boosts the CPU TO 4.5 GHZ freq and all fans at Max.

            • @jt0505t: where is this G button? And when do you use it? soz for my ignorance

              • +1

@yellowfever: Its located in the top left corner of the keyboard.

hmm, i'm still trying to figure it out. But from what i can tell, It forces the CPU @ boost of 4.5Ghz and spins up all the fans. It brings the whole system temp down.

You can turn it on or off any time, during gaming or benchmarking.

I'm not sure if it bumps up the GPU specs though as i didn't see any GPU specs change that i could see, but dont quote me yet… i'll play with it some more.

                • @jt0505t: Okie, pls report back once you know more.

also the fan kicked in after 30min usage, just web browsing & Spotify on. Becoming rather noisy. I have the lid closed, and laptop connected to an external monitor.

                  • +3

@yellowfever: change the profile to Quiet if you are doing just basic office applications, this will reduce the noise. Performance will suffer slightly and temp will increase, but you will get peace and quiet and you wont notice any different.

    • Love and hate your comments! We are still waiting……..😂

      • ha! I feel for yaz, i thought id share my thoughts on the laptop, so far!

        When is yours due?

        • 25 Aug according to Dell. But eBay says by 8 Sep. Long wait…

          • @bypeng: yeah thats long, even going by 25th Aug is still two weeks away….. it was two weeks ago we placed the order for this and it felt like ages…. I'm one of the lucky ones.

          • +1

@bypeng: Mine is worse, but I would have just about been the last person I think….Mon, 07 Sep - Tue, 15 Sep

  • Thats pretty crazy, i ordered like #249 or something on 30 July

thought it would be stuck on processing/building for ages. seems like they do have the parts?

    https://www.dell.com/support/orders/au/en/audhs1
Just checked my order number and it says "Status: Shipped - In transit to local hub"

    https://dellpleportal.dbschenker.com.au/ETA/ETAquery?Length=…

    • +3

I had the same sort of 2/9 to 8/9 dates and that it had been shipped. Then yesterday the estimated delivery was bumped to 8/8 to 10/8 even though it was the 11/10. Then today (Wednesday) it gave me the startrack tracking and delivery should be tomorrow (Thursday). I ordered on the 28/7.

    • Obviously when you ordered hasn't got anything to do with when you get it. I ordered the previous day (29/7) and my order window through Dell tracker says 3/9 to 6/9 and i have no shipping confirmation yet.

But the eBay window had my order delivered between 13/8 and 21/8.

Hoping like others to randomly get an update its onboard for delivery. Although no one will be home to get it anyway.

      • Wow! Dell lottery ? Is your order number smaller than the one above?

        • Well the dell order number is higher than the above one. So for some reason placing the order with eBay earlier didn't put meat the same point in the queue once Dell had the orders.

Still holding out hope it arrives before the 21st… But my luck it wouldn't be.

          • +1

@mxlegend99: Yeah same, I was about order #140 or so on eBay and my Dell order# is after the above one too.

            • @Dipaty: Must be random somehow then. I feel better knowing i wasnt somehow just skipped. I swear thats my luck 90% of the time.

              • +1

@mxlegend99: Don't worry, I was in the first 10 orders and I still haven't received mine either.

                Sad times.

                • @j-scrizz: anyone also used?

put your order ID in, under "sales order number"
