    Lack of Ram comments incoming, 5, 4, 3, 2……..

fwiw, Ive been using my base model 16" M1 macbook pro for about 3 years now. It has the 16/512 spec and its been the best machine ive ever owned.

16GB RAM has never been a limitation.

    • +14

Thank you Apple Intelligence for standardising minimum 16gb ram

    • +4

Even if you’re drinking the apple kool-aid, the conventional wisdom for those more familiar with x86 systems than arm is that 16gb is the minimum you can get away with in 2024. It’s just poor marketing when ram is so cheap at low sizes to not include at least that much.

    • +1

This has finally been addressed! Thanks to needing more to support Apple Intelligence all new Macs get a minimum of 16GB :)

  • +4

First post so please go easy on me :)

  • +6

16GB RAM, can't even open 2 chrome tabs

    • Watching dirty chicken porn?

      • +2

        Shhh thats @jv's secret

      • I hope that means kfc advertisements

    • +1

For this price I can build a gaming pc that can play crysis, mine bitcoin, watch Bonnie Blue and have 10 NRL matches playing at the same time!

      • -1

Never played, got all I need, don't not what that is, and ick. Can it do anything else?

      • It’s a laptop, mate.

    • +1

Must be a Windows user, Its okay, they might catch up one day.

    • +2

Using chrome on a Mac means putting up with a memory hogging poorly coded lodestone around your neck
      Just use any other browser.

      • There are really only two browsers which aren't Chrome, Firefox and Safari.

  • +2

    Also Macbook Pro 14" (M4 Pro) 12/16 Core CPU/GPU 24/512GB Black is $2967 i guess that 10% off too

just realised Some of the Macbook pro M4's @ officeworks have a 10% discount.

  • Are these better than base 14” M2 Pros?

    • Single core performance yes, multi-core roughly the same, graphics no (Though the difference isn't huge).

  • -1

    Worth upgrading from M2 air?

    • +3

Not if you don’t need the extra power

    • Not really worth upgrading any m series. M4 really targeted intel and possibly m1/m2 but I couldn’t find any difference between m2 pro 16 and m4 pro

    • What issues are you facing?

  • isnt' this the retail price for the m4 models?

  • +11

    too much RAM

    • +3

Sadly you can't download less RAM - you could create a 8GB ram disk to keep things in check.

Hey, I'm new to mac - I have a Macbook Air M3 8/10 24/512 on order and the price is very similar to this - would I be better off going with this as opposed to the air?

I don't do a heap of major editing or anything. Mainly some light coding and photoshop, maybe a game here or there.

    • +1

It's going to be almost no difference. The M4 is slightly faster, but you have slightly more ram on your M3, so depends on your workload. There might be a slight benefit with the M4 in Photoshop/compiling, but it's honestly going to be fairly small.

    • +4

You’ll be fine with the air. Only time I’ve had the fans turn on with my M1 MBP has been when playing WOW for extended periods or batch exporting photos in Lightroom. Rest of the time the cpu is barely taxed.

Main differences are the mini LED screen, more ports plus sd card and active cooling but you pay for it in price, size and weight mainly. My wife’s M3 MacBook Air can just squeeze into my PGYTech camera sling where my MBP is just slightly too chonk

    • +2

I’d get the MacBook Pro. The screen and performance bump on sustained loads due to fan (batch photo exports, gaming) outweighs the extra 8gb ram you get on the air.

    • +1

It’s a difficult decision TBH. It will be worse when the M4 MBA comes out and the 15 inch will be about $100 below this one.
But the 14 inch MBP has a fan, an extra thunderbolt port, an SD card reader and a vastly brighter, superior screen.

Apple users are THE MOST resale value conscious consumers I have ever witnessed. They will upgrade due to resale value VS needing the upgrade.

    • +1

Kinda crazy, personally I just use a laptop until the wheels fall off so to speak

      • +1

I’m still using my 2010 27” iMac and the hp B110A inkjet that came free with it bought new 14 years ago, about 8 years ago I put a SSD in it.
Works great and does everything I need.

        • Nice, my laptop is probably about 11 years old. My Brother laser printer is probably about the same. an SSD can give a computer a second lease on life

    • +1

There's a mix - a lot of the Apple users I know buy new and only upgrade when absolutely necessary or buy refurbs.

Any comments on Samsung users upgrading due to trade in value? I did this - got rid of my perfectly good S20FE with no issues due to trade in deals and coupons.

      • Second hand Samsung's are insanely good value - you can get nearly $900 off the price of an S24 Ultra if buying refurbished - so I'd say not.

        • Interesting - any recommendations for retailers?

          • @ihfree: I got mine from Phonebot around a month ago for $1269. Using it to type this right now - it felt like brand new.

            • @DiggyWombat: Thanks will have a look. Got a second s20fe that is in need of an upgrade soon.

  • I wish retailers sold the nano texture option.

  • This is essentially the regular price through the education store in case anyone has discounted apply GC to use

    • +1

Discounted GC, flybuys 10x points, One pass 5x points !!

      • Sorry is that through this store, or the edu store?

      • One pass is standard indeed!
        Wonder where it's 10x point coming ?

  • The base model M4 has only one fan, single direction heat pipe. Can get loud if you hammer it. Unlike M2.
The M series pros are great units, but one of the attractions is the silence, unfortunately they've cheaped out on the base M4.

    • +1

Depending on what you use it for, the Air runs fine without fans. If you have to stress the base M4 macbook pro, you might want one with M4 pro instead.

      • Yeah for most people running Safari, Word, Excel etc, won't matter at all. However for apps that use as much cpu they can, like large video editing tasks or some games, they will max it out pretty soon. Therefore if you can find a cheap M2 maybe don't rule it out. Just saying, it's another thing to consider. Yes M4 Pro chip if you can afford it.

      • +1

Yes the M4 pros have two fans.
        This base M4 one fan.
MBAs have no fan at all. Passive cooling.

Really, this M series SOCs are very impressive.

        • They sure are impressive, but I'm merely shining a light on the fan noise because it sure will annoy some.
M3 Pro almost silent while M4 is like a drone flying in front of your face:

          https://youtu.be/LRRpyTlsZ-s?t=282

        • so the base M4 MBP 14 only has a single fan? are you sure about that, im pretty sure its 2 and dual chamber cooling as well.

  • wonder if we are gonna get any good deals in the next week for MBP 14's
none really so far other than this
    thoughts?

  • +3

Just got Apple to price match over the phone up to 10%, and used Apple Gift Cards I bought at Woolworths last week loaded into my Apple account balance. Ends up being $2,250 for the base MBP 14" with $225 of Woolworths credit on my Everyday Rewards

  • i absolutely hate hate hate fan noise, so it has to be air for me, i just learned you can install win 11 arm for free on it as well and that seals the deal, so im on the look out for a banger deal on air, i think best one we seen was the m3 air 16gb ram for $1499 costco. i just wish it was cheaper then that

    • +1

Price match at Officeworks $1424.99. Probs the best price you’re gonna get for a while

    • -1

      refer to my comment

      • does anyone know the difference in predicated performance between the air m3 and upcoming air m4, in terms of percentage what kind of gains are we looking it, wondering if its worth waiting 3 months for it and what kind of deals we will see im guessing something like 1700

  • +1

8gb ram? you need to be punished for this post

      • -2

Well the reason apple have kept their machines at 8gb of ram is because their chips are the most power efficient and the most well optimised for their devices. Yes it is on the lower end, but everyone in the comment section doesn't understand how optimised you can make your devices if you make your own chip, just as apple has done. 16gb is good, but 8gb is definitely enough for the average person when using a Macbook.

        • Macos is Unix based. Unix was written in the first place as a multi task multi user system. Windows is a historical Dog's breakfast that never began as a muti process system but has evolved.

The M chips are more RISC (reduced instruction set), low level calls more software based, enabling smaller pathways in the chip. This dramatically improved the macbooks from their Intel days. Windows just won't fit the same onto RISC so Apple has the advantage here. Not sure if 8GB is enough these days though, but would be better than on Windows.
