Google Store Now Price Matches 5 Australian Retailers

2960

As spotted by Android Police, the Google Store’s price match policy now applies to 23 countries in total. It was previously only available in the US from Amazon, Best Buy, Target, and Walmart. There 23 new countries (and territory) are as follows:

Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, and the United Kingdom

The following conditions apply:

  • Your request must be made within the buyer’s remorse period.
  • Online pricing must be in the same currency as the currency used to purchase the qualifying product on Google Store.
  • The advertised price must be for the same model (same colour and memory, if applicable).
  • The advertised price must still be in effect when the adjustment is requested (no rain checks if Google Store is out of stock).
  • You must provide a live link to the promo or webpage that verifies the price. PDFs, screenshots, pictures, or individual price quotes are not accepted.
  • For phones, price match is available for Unlocked models only; we’re unable to match pricing for carrier models.
  • Excludes: Contract mobile phones or financing deals; special daily or hourly deals; pre-order or trade-in offers; wholesale or educational pricing; mail-in, coupon, or gift card offers; pricing errors; product bundles or free items; bundled services or support; clearance, open box, refurbished, or pre-owned items; products shipped or sold by third-party sellers on competitor’s website.
  • Google reserves the right to decline a price match if we suspect fraud or unauthorized reseller activity.
  • Only 2 per customer per model.

I'd probably go with officeworks. Their cs is usually a lot better than the other retailers and they price beat.

  • Thanks for the heads up this will come in handy

Google's service pre-COVID19 was pretty good - I had a Pixel 3 sorted that way - but now if you have an issue, you must submit via email, and are warned of delays because of the pandemic. Obviously like many call centres based in Asia, they don't have a WFH option for staff. Until the pandemic passes or they outfit their staff with tech at home, I would buy local.

  • +9

Gee it’s a tough price match. The price needs to be live (eg a live link) at the time of requesting a price beat. No screenshots etc.

You’d hope they respond in a timely manner or you’re wasting your time.

Not sure if Google Store has fixed this but when I purchased my Pixel 4 (and I know many with their Pixel 3), there was an overseas transactional charge by my Aussie credit card provider as the transaction was conducted internally by Google's Irish operation. It took 2x 45mins of chats (or heated argument) before Google would reverse the fee! Be careful

  • +17

I don’t understand. If they match it but don’t beat it why would buy from them? Just to piss off the other retailers?

    • +4

      No point really.

    • +10

They can't very well beat them, because if they're acting as both OEM and sales, and also regularly undercut their distributors (effectively stealing sales from them), who'd want to be their distributor?

Policies like this are mainly to appease customers who missed a price deal at one or another store that they don't have access to; the OEM guarantees that customers can always buy the same product at the same price anywhere, catching a potential lost sale.

    • It lets them price discriminate by getting customers who know that their competitors are cheaper to buy from them instead.
The 15 day window lets them make you feel like you're getting a good deal (i.e. you can't miss out on a cheaper price by buying from them)

    • +1

Agree. Maybe if you were in a rural area with few retailers nearby?

    • -1

      Much better aftersales service

  • +11

    Support the Aussie retailer.
For just a price match I don't see any benefit from this. The retail is bound to handle any warranty issue.

    • +10

Yeah, gotta support the Aussie underdogs like *checks notes* Harvey Norman

      • +2

Like them or not. They employ many Australians. Buy from many Australians distributors and manufactures.
Are listed on the asx, so may well part of some people super holdings.

        • +4

Google has created a lot of jobs for Australians too. My boss doesn't know that my job is mainly googling to find solutions. :)

      • +2

        But… Gerry Harvey

  • +3

This seems to be more useful for price protection (15 days after Google store purchase) rather than price match.

  • +1

So would they match an ebay 20% off sale? If it was tgg?

  • +1

Just give these PSA's another section in the Deal section @mods. Or sidebar of the store page.

  • +3

They have a store not just for apps?

    • +1

      https://store.google.com/au/

      Not Playstore la 🙌

      • OK :)

Just wondering if Google is going to expand their store to become another Amazon?

    • I was wondering the same…

    • -1

I had no idea either. Now I know why… They have about 10 products for sale on the site. Pointless having a store

  • +4

Would have been good on the good guys Google home max pricing.

    • Usually TGG has good pricing when they have the promo code attached (eg. VIP night)
however, I believe Google price match might exclude the use of any promo codes (only advertised price)

So I would believe it might have better chance to get good deals from HN
(eg. they have the chromecast + nest mini bundle for $59 few weeks back while Google was selling the bundle at $89)

    • That was a price error, so I hardly believe Google would have price matched that.

    • +1

Would have been good on the good guys

Please refer to them as the bad guys on OzBargain please…

      • +1

        bad guys
        hardly normal
        jb high price

  • competition, give me moreeee

    • +4

      competitions belong here…

  • +3

I love me a good price match, but do the store offering the best deal a favour and buy from them (unless their customer service sucks of course).
    It encourages lower pricing.

  • Google store,
What do they sell that people are so excited about, fridges, toasters, soap, toilet paper ?
Probabaly just phones, and other proprietory gadgets …..
And it has to be in $AU which sort of limits things as exchange rates vary, so not sure if Canadian phone store will advertise Pixel phone in $AU.

And the issue of postage ….

Have I missed something that should get me excited ?

  • +2

Price matching is partly responsible for the death of small businesses
Will not be contributing to the tight grip around Australian retailers throats. Look what is happening in the U.S with Amazon.

    • +4

They're not price matching small businesses, they're price matching the big guys:

      • Bunnings
      • Harvey Norman
      • JB Hi-Fi
      • Kogan.com
      • Officeworks
      • The Good Guys

Scumbags like Gerry Harvey and Ruslan Kogan don't deserve any loyalty.

  • Wonder if this stacks with the normal 10% credit back for Google one customers

  • +13

    Price Matches are NOT Bargains…

    Read the posting rules

  • -1

why can't people just scroll past deals if they don't like it/doesn't apply to them? feels like everyone needs to make a comment about something blah blah. if you think it violates ozb rules, report it and mods will judge

    • +3

why can't people just scroll past deals if they don't like it/doesn't apply to them?

It's not a 'deal'… It is an announcement of a policy.

  • +1

I have to say, last time I bought from google store they had the best phone support and warranty I have ever had,

Australian guy on the phone instantly, sent me a return package with a phone the next day (express post) and return box pre paid.

    • It would be better if it never needed support in the first place.

  • +2

living under a rock. didn't even realise google had a store.

  • Ruslan Kogan - do me a favour please sell Pixel 4 for $500 with delivery date 2022.

  • +10

Google pays almost zero Australian tax

    Hires less Australian employees.

Is only offering to price match, not price beat.

The added competition is good for consumers but if it's a price match then why not support the local business that pays more Australian tax and supports more local employment/local wages.

    • -2

Better warranty process for consumers. You get the new device before returning the old one which is great for example if you a phone what is slightly faulty but still usable but you want it fixed.

  • -3

But pixel phone just so bad in term of hardware. Always wants to go back to pixel, but had to stuck with Samsung.

    • -3

And software, I deal with plenty of bugs on a daily basis. It's pathetic the quality of pixel phones are after so many years

  • need the TGG price error $99 hub max to come back

    • Wasn't it $129 ?

  • Should add to OP that Google store charges your card from Singapore. So foreign transaction fees will apply without a fee free card.

    • Foreigner currency charges if you don't have a fee free card , you shouldn't be on OzBargain !

      • Cool meme bro. Totally useful and not overused.

  • -3

Oh no, the android police is going to pull me over and fine me because I have an iPhone

  • It is good to know that Google store finally offers a price match.
But to be honest, I don't see any huge bargain buying from them directly.
I would still prefer to go to local stores and support them in any way that I can.

As far as I am aware though, if we purchase goods and services from the Google company or location registered under AU jurisdiction,
they still have to pay local taxes for sure as the buyers get charged for GST as mentioned in the invoice.

I understand there is an ongoing issue with them to pay as little tax as possible as quoted by Mumbles and now ATO is chasing them to pay a fair share to us.

  • Anyone ever tried to return something?
    The support is hopeless
