      RRP is $399.

      • +1

great Price, paid $369 not long ago

      • -8

Thats now not when Nvidia launched in Australia

        • +8

Lol, even if you take the launch price, this is cheaper.

          • +2

@doweyy: they were no where to be found. Amazon was selling them for $800 + last month

        • +1

Launch price was $350, then Australian dollar took a dive, the price went up, granted since then Australian dollar has recovered, so the price should come down. But given the supply vs demand, they haven't needed to, people are spending more time at home indoors due to COVID and as such streaming devices are in high demand.

  • +3

I bought it for $358 after AU launch, good deal OP

  • What are the benefits of going for this model over the standard tube looking one?

    • Plex Media Server inbuilt good at transcoding (needs a good Wifi connection or Ethernet and preferably a NAS)

      • +3

Can I connect one of those seagate external drives to the Shield and be good to go? Surely don't need a NAS?

        • +3

I have the last gen Shield directly connected to a 3TB WD external for all my plex media. I'm able to transfer files to the WD over wifi as well as remove old media. Works great for me without needing a NAS as I have no need to access it outside of the house.

        • you can, put shield is very picky when it comes to hdd.

        • Nvidia have a (small) list of external storage devices you can connect, can be found on their website last I checked in 2019. Having a couple of Shields I can tell you they're difficult in this area.

          • @Ebany: They only list the drives they've actually tested and so there are plenty that would work but are not listed. I took a punt and connected a 4tb WD mypassport drive and it worked fine. That's with the previous version nvidia.

            • @mikeb: You're lucky as the WD 4TB passport is one of the few recommended, I've had far less luck. I've tried WD red 3TB's and 6TB's, thumb drives from different brands, caddies with various brands of SSD - few ever worked.

      • As someone who just runs Kodi ans streams off a HDD connected to my router, I have no interest in Plex, so I am wondering what this brings to the table? My little $50 Android box is getting on but the only thing I use it for is Kodi.

        • +1

It has a pretty impressive upscaler which is useful if you are watching 720p or 1080p content on a 4K display, check YouTube for before and afters

        • It's valuable if you have a 4k tv - since it's got pretty impressive codec support. Can play anything you throw at it, including HDR/Dolby vision/Atmos etc.

        • +1

I use Kodi a great deal and it's where the Shield excels, sound and video upscaling is superb. If Kodi and streaming apps (e.g. Netflix, Disney, Stan) are all you'd use the Shield for, totally recommend it.

edit: I meant if streaming in 4K (with Kodi)

    • +2

      2x USB 3.0 ports

    • +1

Shield TV Pro has few notable advantages over its cheaper cousin:

USB ports : two USB 3.0 ports
More storage and RAM with 3GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage
      Plex media server functionality.

      • Very important to also note that the tube shield runs 32bit Android, while the pro runs 64bit. This means the tube has less app compatibility.

    • +1

Pretty sure the Standard will only run 32 bit apps, this should run 64bit

  • Can this handle a large vid library of 1000s of files?

    • PMS can

      • it's just take in the past I've tried Rasp Pi 3 with LibreElec and there's heaps of lag when trying to access a large collection of vids…

        • Probably server or hdd seek speeds slowing you down, my Pi2 with OSMC is fast. You may also be getting thumbnail images from the video file and not a separate jpg.

        • I've got this with a few thousand movies, and a few hundred TV series and no lag though I did move the library metadata to an external SSD right upon setup. It's very responsive. Not as lightning fast as a latest gen high end PC / server but pretty good. I've got all the features on too (generating chapter thumbnails etc), though that can take a very long while for the scheduled tasks to initially process such a large library, but so will anything that isn't a pretty beefy server.

      • My partner often seems able to get through 1000s of videos with PMS.

    • Same sort of question: I have a USB 10TB Seagate Expansion drive packed with ~20GB movies. Will the Shield be able to handle using the inbuilt PMS without movies lagging or interface issues?

      • And here I was downloading a movie for the first time in ages very happy with the quality of one just over a gig.

      • +1

        https://support.plex.tv/articles/221099648-limitations-when-…

Have a look at what your movies are encoded with.

      • I can only speak for the older models: No, Plex has serious issues with audio through the Shield. It was an extensive issue when I got my 2018 models so I gave up on Plex about a year ago, maybe someone can update if things have improved.

        • I've had no problems using PMS.

          • @mikeb: Again, you're lucky. There's a crap ton of support info on the Nvidia forums, most common issue seems to be stuttering or no audio.

  • -4

I bought it from PLE at launch for $349.00 , and everywhere else in world RRP is $280au we are being ripped off

    https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/shield/shop/

    • +9

Same story with everything though, this is not news.

    • NOWAY! When did that start happening?

      • +3

Norway was founded on 17 May 1814

    • yes phone case is $1 and in oz it is $30

  • I use my Google phone to stream video and playback 4K video files, connected with a projector. All works fine. Not sure whether I still need this for my projector, any advantages? Is it more powerful than Pixel 4 XL?

    • Depends on what you're using it for, this has pretty nice AI upscaling for 720p/1080p movies and the ability to run a local plex server. If you're just watching 4k direct from a streaming service then it possibly isn't going to be any better for you personally.

  • Good price, this is what I paid at launch. Very happy with purchase

  • -2

Dont see the free upgrade to express shipping am ebay plus member express shipping extra $9

  • Yep, great price - love this beast.

  • Thanks, was a bit hesitant because of AfterPay but pulled the trigger still.

Can anyone confirm how much it impacts your credit score?

    • AfterPay typically don't perform credit checks, so it's unlikely to impact your credit score/history.

      • except reporting to credit collection company

    • Doesn't touch your credit score unless you default.

  • +1

I've been looking at getting a new media player, and the Zidoo Z9X has been getting a lot of good comments, launching in August I believe - https://www.zidoo.tv/Product/index/model/Z9X/target/VEMg6VRC…

Unsure on its price yet, but anyone care to comment on the differences/advantages over the Shield Pro?

    • +2

Shield doubles up as a gaming device too, with the NVIDIA Tegra X1+ chip. Trusted, proven, well updated!
Also 3GB RAM for Shield Pro (vs 2GB) and Chromecast 4K

And not Chinese, which is also a consideration for many Australians like me, at the moment!

      https://www.androidheadlines.com/2019/10/nvidia-shield-tv-pr…

      • The gaming side of the Shield is terrible. You need to stream from a personal computer, and it needs to be a beast. My new rig with a Ryzen 3900X and GTX 2080 Super can't get better than 720p with new games.

        • I am currently playing Asphalt 9: Legends on the old Shield and it is great.

But ya, very few games in the store currently and Geforce NOW subscription is not available in Australia! A VPN should work I guess.

          • +1

@bobz79: Nvidia let us subscribe, they just don't let us play :/
VPN works but the lag makes the games unplayable.

        • +1

I've found the game streaming side of the shield great. I can stream any game from my pc (GTX 1080ti + i7-8700k) at 1440p with no noticeable lag at all.

When I first bought my shield which is a 2019 pro model, I tried to stream games from my pc to shield via Wi-Fi and it was terrible. Plugged in an ethernet cable and it plays super smooth.

Currently playing Star Wars Fallen Order which is quite a beefy game to run.

          • @Zudio8: I had few issues with Tomb Raider, heaps of trouble with X4, and The Witcher 3 would only run in 720p.

Truth is Streaming games from my computer feels like a painful novelty …….. now I just play my gaming rig and am far happier.

    • I replaced my Zidoo X9 with the shield for both gaming and streaming. Hands down the Shield is currently the best 4K streaming system I've used (excluding Plex), unfortunately the game side sux.

      • I'm not interested in the gaming side at all, plenty of other devices for that.

How old was your X9? The Z9X hasn't been released yet and media streaming player fans in some forums I read are all saying its specs/features are ahead of everything else out there.

        • About 2016 I think. Great device for the most part but it was prone to bootloop if unplugged from power for a while, the only way to fix this is flash the firmware. Zidoo has a great community, terrible company support.

I've heard great things about Roku 4k but I've very little experience with them and am yet to get my hands on one.

I also heard Amazon will soon be launching a 4K version of their Fire Stick

    • It doesn't have Android TV or Widevine L1. Just another Chinese box, which are usually great for the price, but … the wait for a Shield beater continues.

  • Is it still receiving updates

    • +1

Yeah mate, it's the 2019 revision so still well within active development.

  • thanks bought one

  • +1

I know this is a poweful TV box, but what does it do? I've already got a NAS as my media server and an Android TV with built-in Chrome cast and Youtube and such, do I need this box?

    • I bought one recently and it is great. Its not cheap, but I used it to replace my Mi Box. The interface is the same, but much faster, doesn't crash or need reboots and everything seems to be working.

I have kayo, disney, Netflix all working. I also connect it to my NAS and am running the plex server, and this allows all my devices to go to plex.tv and stream.

I cant comment on dolby sound quality or 4k upscaling, as my TV isn't even HD, and I only have a 5.1 old surround sound receiver, but it all works.

In the end, spending 300-400 was worth spending, due to daily crashing and reboots of the xiaomi mi box, usable plex server and a faster interface.

The shield games don't work though… the Australian region is locked out.

      • How does Kayo go with delay compared to mobile app or web browser? on my Telstra TV Roku Kayo is about half a minute behind the other devices somehow. Perhaps fetches the content from another CDS or something.

        • Kayo is always delayed no matter the device. I run Kayo on Telstra TV, Vodaphone TV, nvidia shield and mobile app. All pretty much the same.

          • @mikeb: Of all those, is there a marked difference in using pro shield?

    • +1

Only if you want superior 4k upscaling and the ability to play high end android games.

    • It can decode 5.1 / 7.1 sound from your movies for your home theatre setup, which is probably not possible with android TV and NAS.

    • You can download an app from the Play Store that helps the Shield auto-detect frame rate and match it for output. The Mi Box S can’t do that.

      • which app is this? isnt there an option in the setting menu to do this already?

        • Discussion starts here be sure to read over the page where Shield is mentioned

  • should i swap an apple tv 4k for one of these?

    • +7

      Without a doubt

      • the code isnt working :/

        • +1

Make sure to change payment method to Afterpay

      • +3

why? From memory the latest apple tv 4k has essentially the same media support as the shield.

If OP wants to run Plex media server, or use emulators - then it makes sense.

Edit: Oh. A quick google shows the Apple TV doesn't even have a usb port.. Lol. Yes, sell and buy an nvidia shield.

    • -7

Definitely not ATV 4K is way more mature than this

      https://whrl.pl/Rf6Mm0

      • +1

FYI That links to a comment around CoreELEC (Which the Odroid N2 runs) - not nvidia shield.

Not sure if you've misunderstood the comment, or if you've linked to the wrong comment.

Either way - Nvidia shield 2019 is very mature. Any comments in that thread prior to November 2019 would be discussing the older version.

it's been a dream on my 4k tv, plays everything i throw at it, and supports everything I throw at it HDR/Dolby vision/atmos on local media & streaming services. So not sure what issues you're implying it has?

Only issue I've come across is no Youtube HDR - due to the lack of VP9 hardware decoding.

    • Depends what you want to do. If it's only play Netflix and other commercial streaming apps, no, the Apple TV is great for that. Android TV is more an enthusiast and/or gamers box with more flexibility and apps to stream almost anything.

  • Is there any difference between the 2019 version and the 2020?

    • -7

      The remote

      • +7

Wayne, there are people you can talk to who can help, you know.

      • And the Tegra X1+ chipset which supports HDR and Dolby Vision. The 2017 version didn't support Dolby Vision so that feature is new.

    • +2

There is no 2020 version, this is the 2019.

      • +3

Yes there was the 2017 version and then the new 2019 version which is this current release. Well these are the ones which were actually officially released in Australia.

Let's not forget the 2015 version but that was not released for sale in Australia.

        • People are likely confused because the 2019 version didn't get widely available in Australia until 2020.

    • +2

I think you must mean the 2017 version.

The only difference is the newer Tegra X1+ chipset in the 2019 version as opposed to the older Tegra X1 chipset in the older 2017 version and there's a new model remote control.

  • Great price, Mine was $353 last month

  • Is anyone else waiting to see how the next gen consoles work with media before thinking about upgrading?

    • Yeah I'm keen to see how the new consoles stack up in terms of media playback, but between now and then, I really want to get my hands on the Google Sabrina, which has huge potential:

      https://www.androidpolice.com/2020/06/16/everything-we-know-…

    • Sure, if you can wait 3 months the new consoles should in theory be better than this EXCEPT that there tends to be way more waiting for boot up and moving around menus to get everything done which is annoying.

I tried an xbox one s as a media player for a while and it seemed like every time I tried to use it to watch something I had to wait for something to be updated.

For most people convenience > performance but if you can hang out a bit it's probably best to keep waiting and see how they perform.

      • I think boot up time will be a thing of the past given the SSD technology and CPU power. And the very knowledge of the PS5 already having a dedicated remote gives me hope. But I too used my previous console for a little while as a media player and it wasn't great. I'm very much loving my older generation shield, just a little crazy to think that I'll have a console, a smart tv, and a shield that can all access media.

  • +1

Great price considering I paid $367 for this back in June. Although I do still think that $300 should've been the AU RRP. I bought the very first Shield TV back in 2015 for $210 (AUD) from Amazon US, which barring a slightly higher clocked SoC, smaller form factor, Dolby Vision support and AI picture processing, is identical to this model plus that one came with a game controller and remote. Still this is a must buy for anyone who likes to playback 80GB 4K Blu-ray remuxes without any stutter or performance issues.

  • Thanks OP picked one up as been eyeing one for a while now.

  • Does anyone know if this works well with Optus Sport? And is it easy to use for Dummies?
