    $35/mth Credit (on $75/mth Plan) for 12mths

500 GB DATA for $45 is still a rip off…

They should make it unlimited for those who qualifiy…

    • +5

$40. And really? I thought it's actually decent.

      • +3

        $40. And really?

Well, if you have a family of 4, that is 4GB each per day.

So people hard on their luck should only stream for about an hour a day each???

          • @BlueSkyAPI: For a family of 4, the max income before you are no longer eligible for FTB part A is abt $110k. Not exactly that "low" as you might expect especially if only 1 adult choose to work.

        • +12

I love your stuff jv but I disagree with you here. I think this is actually a really good deal and it should be called out. $40 for a reasonable amount of bandwidth at 500GB on a 25Mbps plan, is decent and a good option.

TPG's lowest plan is $60 month and that's 12Mbps, mind you with unlimited data (at 12Mbps it would be hard to push 500GB I think).

No lock in contract, no fees for the modem. Not a bad deal.

          • +1

@b2dz: It also includes a telephone service and calls

It includes 4GX failover (6 Mbps)

And the SMG2 is probably the best ISP-provided wireless router out there…

This is a great deal IMHO

            • @willyroo: Telstra bumped up the 4G failover to something like 25/2 Mbps.

            • +1

              @willyroo: i think the 4gx failover is 24/2 now.

              • @OssieA: did u get a txt from telstra confirming this ? Just trying to get more info

                • @the fig man: I'll have a check soon. Last time I checked it was 24/2 and alot of people on whirlpool confirmed.

          • @b2dz: $65 a month ($60 on plan) Belong Unlimited 50Mbps.
            I have a family of 5. Use 1.5TB a month. I agree with JV.

            • @npiet1: That's 30% more

              • +1

                @b2dz: More like 30% more

                • +3

@Click_It: Yes, like if you compare two cars - one is $60,000 new and one is $40,000 new. You say the $60k car is way better than the $40k car. Of course it is, because it costs $20k extra.

The extra $20 savings on this plan could be very useful for some families. Could be a month's worth of toilet paper or few bags extra of rice/pasta/whatever. A family of 4 could make 500GB work. Maybe not streaming 24/7, but definitely workable.

                  • @b2dz: Oh that was my failed attempt of doing a jv but you are right. The friend I got onto this deal has 1 daughter and their household won't threaten 500GB/month. They have mild streaming, only Amazon Prime and only light use. I'd be surprised if they push 200GB probably much less. But that fallback to 4G is going to be awesome for them.

                    • @Click_It: Agreed.

Actually it's 50% more anyway. Fail on my part.

                    • @Click_It: Make sure they get Telstra reception in house or that 4g won't happen . Many people get caught out with this who have signal.issues inside
Contracts especially 2 years on the NBN is a Mugs game

              • @b2dz: Yeah $20 extra for piece of mind of not running out of data, or being locked into a contract or having the plan suddenly change to $75 after 12 months.

                • +1

@npiet1: Well the plan referred to for $20 extra was also in a locked in contract.

You would get notified before the impending price change and free to move to another provider.

Can manage/monitor data usage through telstra apps I assume.

Not for everyone, but a good deal for some.

Anyway, i'm done talking about something i'm not buying.

          • @b2dz: I may be wrong, but I think you need to pay out the modem if you leave/switch/cancel/etc within 24 months.

It's $9 for each month (up to 24 months).

I copied the relevant part of the Critical Information Summary, and I posted it below.

So, if you leave after 12 months (for example to avoid the price increase) you will still owe 12×$9=$108 for the modem.

But it's a good modem, and imho it is worth paying off to own it.

            • +1

@BooYa: I pasted the T's and C's in my post in a few comment trails underneath, but posted again here. If you check the last line it says that you don't need to pay the modem if you leave after 12 months - being 12 months and 1 day.

After 12 mths, the full Core Internet plan price will apply ($75/mth, plan price may change). If you cancel your plan within 12 mths of connecting, you will need to payout the remaining cost of your Telstra Wi-Fi Modem. The payout amount is $9 multiplied by the number of months remaining from 24 months e.g. if you leave after 8 months you would pay $9 x 16 (the number of remaining months), at a total of $144. If you leave after 12 months, you will not need to payout your Telstra Wi-Fi modem.

              • @b2dz: Oh, ok mate, I didn't read the full thing, so I got it out of context.

Then it's an even better offer.

              • @b2dz: Can someone paste a link to the T's & C's? The critical information summary I'm reading is worded much differently (https://www.telstra.com.au/help/critical-information-summari…). Could it have changed to discourage people changing after 12 months and keeping the modem?

                • +1

@Alligator Arms: The T&C you listed, and the ones they link to, are the general ones for the normal $75 service… there are some specific differences when you get your confirmation email, and on the sales page itself, that mention the no need to pay it back if you stay the 12 months. Click on "More Details' near the top of the page. They have not made a new critical information summary for this offer.

          • @b2dz: NBN now has to provide a minimum of 25Mbps, so even better (not sure if TPG has updated this)

          They should be working instead.

          • +2

@mrvaluepack: There's not exactly loads of jobs available at the moment.

            • -2

@b2dz: There is. Just depends if one would accept the job or prefer to stay on job seeker. Plenty of people quit for this reason.

              gave you a +1 btw

        • I have 110mb/40mb with Aussie, family of 4, and we use under 500gb a month, not everyone streams in 4k 24hrs a day, and deal might be very useful for some Vic's home schooling.

Granted you'll get screwed after 12months though.

          • @TrendyTim: Cancel after 12 months.

          • @TrendyTim:

not everyone streams in 4k 24hrs a day,

            4Gb is about an hour a day…

        • God you're a grumpy and demanding person! Maybe the point of this is so that the children from low income families can study. That way, maybe they can stop the generational poverty…

          • @sator: So why not give them unlimited data for the same price? Why should they get an inferior product just because they are poor?

    • +1

You do get 3 free data top-ups in the 12 months too, not sure it is mentioned in the offer anywhere but it is in the plan details they email you later.

    • If you only need 500GB then it probably good value. I need unlimited gigabit tho to achieve true happiness.

      • And surgery for that overused wrist of yours! =D

    • -1

Yep very expensive with data limit. Imho not really a deal $30 unlimited would be a deal for those who need some help. Heck even giving them 50mbit speed to 25 shouldn't even be available

  • +9

That's a backward marketing way of saying it'll cost $40 per month.

I still can't afford that. I'll stick with my discounted mobile broadband offer of $5 per month with Telstra (after discounts). 1.5Mb/sec isn't fast but it's good enough for almost all essential purposes such a Jobseeking, Centrelink business and Banking.

    • +2

      You didn't mention Ozbargaining.

    • +2

we need another round of $0.99/40GB Kogan Mobile SIMs….

      • data only Sims?

  • +1

Reverts to $75 per month after 12 months. If need Telstra modem will cost you $99.

    • Telstra Smart Modem free to new customers, and to be honest old ones too if you need one.

      • T&Cs in application process say you will be charged $99 for the modem if you cancel before 24 months. Remembering only first 12 months is discounted.

        • +1

You need tor read again, the modem is free after 12 months on this deal. Under 'More Details' is states " If you leave after 12 months, you will not need to payout your Telstra Wi-Fi modem."

        • Does it?

After 12 mths, the full Core Internet plan price will apply ($75/mth, plan price may change). If you cancel your plan within 12 mths of connecting, you will need to payout the remaining cost of your Telstra Wi-Fi Modem. The payout amount is $9 multiplied by the number of months remaining from 24 months e.g. if you leave after 8 months you would pay $9 x 16 (the number of remaining months), at a total of $144. If you leave after 12 months, you will not need to payout your Telstra Wi-Fi modem.

          • @b2dz: Yes. Last line of what you just posted.

            • +1

@Pobman: Sorry I was replying to Rifter, not you :)

              • @b2dz: Yes worked that out after I posted lol.

      • What's the going price if you offload it on Facebook Market Place or eBay?

        • Option in application to say you already have Telstra nbn connection and modem which removes it from order.

        • +1

I picked up a Smart Modem gen 2 for free off gumtree last week

        • Free to $100 depending on the buyer.

          • @Twix: I'm guessing it's a HFC modem

            • @BooYa: It's a router. The modem is installed by NBN and you connect the Telstra router to it.

              • +1

@koole: Except on FTTN & FTTB where NBN don't install a connection device.

            • @BooYa: Telstra modems are a modem, wifi router with 4G failover.

  • Just signed upto this last week, the order went nowhere, had to go instore to talk to them, and they process it there, and give you a modem with 4g in the meantime , best way to go.

    • The 4G backup in the modem is a life saver.

      • But it’s limited to 1 Mbps?

        • 5 MB/s down
          1 MB/s up

I was streaming live video stream from Europe once when the modem switched to backup.

I didn't even realise there was a problem until I saw the modem lights (it was a loose cable).

I don't know the backup speed with this deal, but standard backup on this modem/ISP is 5 down and 1 up (which is enough for most things unless you're a heavy user, or maybe a gamer who needs low latency etc)

          • @BooYa: I just got a friend onto this deal and they have their modem. Do you have to add a data SIM to get that backup working or does the modem just handle it automatically?

        • Telstra bumped up the 4G failover to something like 25/2 Mbps.

          • @Twix: Faster than NBN in a lot of places lol.

            • @b2dz: Yeah NBN need to remediate the slowest connections.

  • Just to confirm does this include calls locally and mobile.
My mother is old-school and hates mobile and wants a landline back

    • +1

      Yes:
      Call connection fee – included
      Local calls – included
National calls to fixed line numbers – included
Calls to standard Australian mobiles – included
Calls to 13 numbers – 500 calls per month included. Calls made over this allowance will be charged at 40¢ per call (except for free calls to 13 2200, 13 2000, 13 2203, 13 2999, 13 3933 and 13 7663)
Directory Assistance – Unlimited free calls included to 1223, 1234 and 12456. Directory Assistance Assisted Connection will remain PAYG at $1.50 per call with fees accepted in real time on the call (free for customers who use Disability Help Line (DAH) on: 12551)

      • Thank you I did read that but just wanted confirmation cheers

      • can you plug a phone into it?

        • yes

  • -2

Minimum cost based on you staying connected to this plan for 24 months and may change if month-to-month plan price changes. However, if you cancel your plan within 24 months of connecting, you will need to payout the remaining cost of your Telstra Wi-Fi Modem. The payout amount is $9 multiplied by months remaining in the first 24 months e.g. if you leave after 20 months you would pay $9 x 4 (the number of remaining months), at total of $36.

So if you left after 12 months you'd owe Telstra 12×$9=$108 for the modem.

Other than that, sounds like a good deal.

  • so am I eligible if I * have not connected to the nbn with another carrier in the last 3 months , only?

BTW, I was able to place the order online @$40 per month. Let's see if they honor for the only reason as stated above.

    • Got this message.

"We complete credit checks on every order and have discovered an issue with your application so have cancelled your order"

So I guess you must meet all of the below conditions:
      * are receiving Family Tax Benefit Part A or Part B
      * don't have home internet - or you're on an internet plan with Telstra
      * have not connected to the nbn with another carrier in the last 3 months

      • That sucks. Shame it cost a credit check.

  • Great deal.

I m current on 50mbps and would like to keep this speed or higher. Is $35 credit only applicable to 25mbps plan or does it include 44 and 88 plan as well. Thank you.

    • This deal is for 25 Mbps. Anything more is full price.

  • +1

This deal has already been posted.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/540263

    • +1

Its been un-expired again… even though it never expired in reality.

  • +1

Regardless of pricing, good luck on getting this service activated if you don't already have nbn.

Apparently Telstra has run out of stock of the white nbn connection boxes, I'd expect nbn itself to be similarly low stock.

  • -2

Not a good deal. To truly help those families it should be unlimited and probably for $20. The Internet prices are horrendous, realistically prices should be $40 for 100mbps connection unlimited.

    • +2

Great can you show me where you can get unlimited 100Mbps for $40 or unlimited (presumably 25mbps) for $20?

Or even better, can you show me any reputable NBN provider that has a a 25Mbps 500GB offer for $40 or less that includes telephone calls?

If not, by definition, this is a good deal.

      • I said what it should be, it’s theory not reality with overtly expensive nbn plans.

  • +2

I put in an order for this on June 10th.

On July 10th I finally got an email saying the technician will be here to set it up on 28 July, between 8am-12pm, and that someone over the age of 18 must be present for the installation.

Current internet connection is Telstra Air, I connect to it with a router and share it between several devices… sooooo slow. Looking forward to finally having a semi-decent connection!

  • *have not connected to the nbn with another carrier in the last 3 months - wish this was removed. Wonder if they are recouping the loss partly by charging the new development connection fee, I got it waived years back

  • Check if your area is covered by TPG FTTB … 59.95 … 3 month free with FTTBFREE3. and UNLIMITED 100 Mbps ( 95Mbps for me )
