            • @shellshocked: How's the screen? Have you been able to compare it with the TUF A15?

              • @F1ProjectOne: The TUF has a horrible screen in terms of colour accuracy. The Dell one is a lot better, just slightly less than the G14 in terms of quality for a 144hz display.

  • Why do most laptops sold in AUS have smaller battery compared to ones sold in USA?

  • Got the other one of these for $1300 from dell the laptop over heats and turns off after 5 minutes of gaming hitman2

    • What temps is it reaching?

    • Yeah the crashing is not related to the temperatures, it's a software / driver issue I think.
Everyone that I've spoken to with this laptop is experiencing the same shit.

      • Sounds fixable then with drivers at least, annoying for early adopters though no doubt
Hope they sort it soon for ya mate

      • So Jarrod's tech doesn't seem to have any issues playing games however he noticed some games run on the integrated Vega graphics by default. The fix is to go to the graphics settings and set the game on High performance mode, see if that fixes your issue.

  • back in stock

    • yes but not at this price.

      • +1

Yes it's back in stock. The price is still $1979.09 and the voucher code still works so it seems you still can get it for $1583.27.

        • Yes. I didnt see the code on the product page and i tried it manually and yes it worked.

        • does the code expire by midnight?

          • +1

@baldur: No idea. No clear cut off time.
From the terms: "Offer Period. This offer is available for a limited time only, as long as it is displayed by eBay on www.ebay.com.au ("Offer Period"). eBay reserves the right to cancel the offer at any time."

  • Which code are you guys using?
    PDTECH20 isn't working for me

    • Just tried now PDTECH20 works

      • It's working as a guest

I made a review for this laptop forgive annoying msg sounds.

    • So it's true, the laptop hangs all the time?

      • Only game that has played longer then 10 minutes has been binding of issac. Anything with 3d graphics will just hang. Hitman 2 on low settings ran the longest at 9 minutes then shut off. 2 days old latest drivers new Dell bios update and AMD G5 SE drivers.

        • did you measure the temps? also, you should open a ticket with dell

          • +2

@pragmaticguy: If you open a ticket they will tell you to call their technical support - I've done it a few time over the past few days, here's the number if you need 1300 655 533.
Just a warning: the people I've gotten on there so far have been marginally smarter than a potato.

        • Have you tried to download the latest driver from AMD, I don't use Dell one.

          https://www.amd.com/en/support/graphics/amd-radeon-5000m-ser…

          Not
          Adrenalin 2020 for DELL G5 15 SE

          • @kml22: U using the same laptop? And no issues with this bios ?

          • @kml22: That's the version I'm using as well.
After a clean install (Factory Reset option when installing the drivers), it worked fine for a day or so but the issues eventually came back.
I think it's a conflict with something that Dell made - perhaps the chipset driver or something? Who knows…

            • @Dipaty: So, still the same issue is there? Damnit, hope they fix it soon

          • @kml22: I still get the blue screen of death even with this Adrenalin installed. From light gaming (league) in minimum settings!

    • I have ordered one, delivery late July. Can you check the driver mentioned by kml22 and let us know?

      • Try using this link to track your order in more detail.
The tracking on their website SUCKS and for some reason the real tracking info doesn't get pushed to the order page.
Paste your order# and it'll give you an updated ETA. Mine originally said 1 month from my purchase but it ended up arriving about 1-2 weeks from order date.
        https://dellpleportal.dbschenker.com.au/ETA/ETAquery?Length=…

        • I think thats for dell, eBay order it will be different

          • @ozshopp3r: Ahh I assumed you'd get a Dell order# emailed after you order through eBay - like an order confirmation or something

  • Oos again? Damn.

    • and code expired anyway.

  • +3

This was indeed a bargain gaming laptop. No doubt software issues will be resolved soon. Else Dell will be inundated with returns.

  • There is an app called Ryzen Controller which allow you to adjust CPU setting to lower the temperature, check out this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8n5lKZ502TY&feature=emb_logo

Pretty decent finding from Jarrod tech.

  • Is anyone able to access their tracking through dell or ebay website?
Im supposed to enter my order nr but dell website doesnt accept it.

    • I managed to, my ETA is 23rd of July. Have you used this link? https://dellpleportal.dbschenker.com.au/ETA/ETAquery?Length=…

      • Yes, tried several times. I always get the message "no data found".

In the email they sent it says "order number starts with 87XXXXXX", but mine is 13-xxxxx-xxxxx (it's in the same email).
        Does yours start with 87?

        • DELLORDERNO87****** I have just pasted the whole thing DELLORDERNO included.

          • @F1ProjectOne: Sorry, where did you get the dellorderno from? I only have an "order update" email from ebay, with all the links how to check tracking, but there is no dellorderno.

            • +2

@maiuspala: You can find it in your ebay account under Purchase history.

              • @F1ProjectOne: Actually i saw it there a few days ago, but then it didnt work on tracking website.

Now tried again and its only showing me: "Your Dell Order No 87xxxxxx… has an ETA of Between 23/07/2020 And 26/07/2020

Not much use of this tracking info. Is yours as vague?

    • Yea, did you get the second mail with dell order number ?

      • No, i didnt. But i now found the order no in ebay purchace history

  • I have an ETA of 23-26 of July although I'm hoping to get it sooner as it's scheduled to arrive in Australia on Saturday and be passed onto to dell locally on Monday.
Right now it's on a pallet in Chengdu that is scheduled to hop onto a Cathay Pacific flight tomorrow bound for Hong Kong.

    • How did you get that specific info ? I can only see SHIPPED: In transit to local hub

Does anyone currently have the laptop in their possession or a unit with the same chassis?
I'm looking to mount a secondary SSD and according to pictures in the service manual it looks like you require a thermal shield which acts as a mounting bracket to secure the m.2 drive down. https://www.dell.com/support/manuals/au/en/audhs1/g-series-1…
Is the bracket necessary, are you able to mount a m.2 2280 SSD in place without the bracket?
I've been trying to find the bracket in case it's indeed required and not getting any luck. I contacted dell support and they gave me a part number gdkk0 although I'm not sure if it's correct. All the thermal shields I have been able to find doesn't seem to be for this particular chassis.

    • Like to know too. Also would like to know If it would void warranty

      • It shouldn't. Plus you can always take it out before you send it off to get serviced.

        • You won't need a thermal shield to mount the drive, but it doesn't come with a screw in the mounting post for the rear end of the M2 drive. So you'll need to source an M2x3 screw with a wide enough top to hold the drive down. I pinched one from an old Macbook we had sitting around. I also ordered a separate heatsink to put on top of the drive (which I didn't end up using, as I'm trying to sell the laptop now). However I then found the mounting post and screw leave a gap for the Dell-style thermal plate that screws down, but this was easily solved with a small piece of tape. The drive is secure as-is but has a bit of movement.

          Hope this helps.

    • Normally you use be able to use the SSD by itself without the shield. That device is just there to aid with thermal diffusion, many m.2 in other laptops don't have shields.

      • Normally yes. But if you look at the pictures in the service manual a M.2 2280 doesn't seem to fit and it looks like the bracket is required to secure it in place. Might be a scaling issue with the image, that's why I asked if anyone who has the laptop already can confirm.

    • Ok after some research I'm confident that a thermal shield/bracket won't be needed to mount a SSD to the second M.2 slot.
As for the images in the service manual, seems like the SSD has been superimposed on an angle.

  • 15% off on Dell website at the moment - $1869.

    • It was 15% off the base model a few days ago, but not the equally priced 120Hz version… :(
As vchan posted above, the base model actually runs faster in games due to more power being diverted to the GPU. Only issue is the 8GB RAM.

  • is it possible to find this price again anytime soon?

    • Be awesome if it did appear again. I’m pretty close to purchasing at 15% off, even though it’s $286 more. Think this price was a weird interaction between Dell 10% off and eBay discount code

      • I think so too. Probably dell wasnt aware of ongoing 20 percent eBay deal.

      • you can use the code EPP5 to get another 5% off

  • Received my laptop today, what would you guys recommend to do so that it works flawlessly? cross finger

    • Mine too…why is the trackpad so offcenter. Is it meant for lefthanded people?
And the charging brick is literally a brick.

Other than that everything looks nice

      • Yeah the power brick is huge! have you tried to play games on it yet?

        • Not yet. Actually it was bought for missus to replace her mbp.
But im quite sure i will transfer my games to her laptop now

  • Does anyone know how/where to get invoice for that laptop? I cant find anything in my emails and ebay takes me to my paypal. Would paypal printout be enough for TRS? And does the laptop have to be packed in the original box for TRS?

    • I got my invoice emailed to me today, but yet to receive the laptop.

  • So I've played Far Cry Primal on it and it works fine, about 80 fps everything maxed out. I have updated the BIOS and all the AMD drivers before playing. So it looks like the crashing issues only affected that batch of 4600H models.

  • Mine arrived today, bios updated, AMD drivers installed all that McAfee trash uninstalled, played a few games of Teamfight tactics in bed, it goes well when plugged in but the battery gets wiped out fast gaming.

I'll need to buy a little stand or breakfast tray to use it in bed as I don't like blocking the intakes with the blanket.

Only issue so far is it wont synchronise with the windows time server so I had to set that manually.

Very happy with it, almost as fast as my 3600 +5700XT desktop I built about a year ago.

  • Are you guys happy with your purchase?
Im really worried about battery life. I havent done much with it, just downloaded all the updates and transferred my games from epic launcher. Battery seems to go from 100% to 70% in no time (maybe in 20min). Looks like i cant leave this laptop unplugged at all if i want to leave it unattended.

    • Most laptops will drain really quick during gaming, they are expected to last about 1h to 1h30.

How do you find the screen? I have reservations about it, the colour calibration could be off. Here is a comparison with a 6 years old XPS 15: https://imgur.com/HBidsJe

      • I havent used that laptop for gaming or anything power hungry.
Its only been on standby while downloading and updating drivers and windows.
Havent gotten to checking the screen yet.

        • That's slightly concerning if it was just for updates, I thought you were gaming.

          • +1

@F1ProjectOne: Couple of tips if you are new to this laptop.

I have the Dell G5 SE with the AMD Ryzen 4800h and 5600m.

*Just make sure that BIOS was up to date via the "Dell Update" tool.
            * It originally came with Freesync disabled, but I just downloaded the latest Radeon G5 SE Driver from the AMD website to enable it:

            https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/release-notes/rn-rad-win-d…

*Use Display Driver Uninstaller to clean out the previous drivers and install the new ones fresh.

I have tested all the ports without problems. I have also connected external monitors via HDMI and Display Port to benchmark and play games, with 3DMark Time Spy/Fire strike and Overwatch without issues.

Also tested the battery with PCMark10, set to Modern Office. I get exactly 6hrs out of it with WiFi enabled and set to best battery life. It's provided with a 51wh battery but can be upgraded to 68wh [Though it does not seem to be available yet in Australia, It is an option in the US]

I did noticed that service manual for G5 SE 5500 does seem to show the Intel version, in terms of internals, rather than the AMD version and is different.

It does get warm, like the Intel based gaming laptops I have had before, but I just reduce that by using a tool called Ryzen Controller

            https://www.ryzencontroller.com/

There is also a registry hack from this Asus G14 review which works on the Dell G5 SE to help lower temperatures.

            https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6oS8kbG-oZU&feature=youtu.be

It's around the 4:42 min mark. After you enable the registry hack, you will have "Processor performance boost mode" option under the power plan, by going to "Change advanced power settings". Setting it to "Efficient Aggressive" helps lower temps a lot whilst gaming, with minimal effect. If you just need more CPU grunt set it to "Aggressive".

            • @shellshocked: Thank you for all the tips. Actually battery life is not issue to me, I always game plugged in.

I have updated everything as soon as I received it and applied the registry hack as well. However, I have noticed it's still within acceptable temperature range with the turbo boost enabled so I leave it on enabled, aggressive seems to push the temps too far.

            • @shellshocked: I had got too much freezing. Occasionally every here and there for 2 secs. Dell told me to do a clean install using dell os recovery, but for some reason the boot keeps getting error while installing. I then downloaded the windows from Microsoft website and installed it using the tool from Microsoft website, and booted it as a clean install. No dell drivers apart from bios. And amd drivers from AMD, now the performance is on a different level, so so smooth and no lag and freeze. Just for anyone having similar issues

              • @ozshopp3r: I'm getting the 2 second freezes every now and then, might do a clean windows install from microsoft without all the dell rubbish.
I'm having another random issue of the laptop just completely going dead when battery still has 40% or more left.

                • @Kegsta: Had the same issues, do one thing, download the windows from microsoft website, flash to USB using tool from Microsoft website itself. Then do the clean install, dont forget to format the drive while clean flashing. And then install the drivers directly from AMD website, no more such issues.

                  • @ozshopp3r: Simply Uninstalling all Dell software seems to have done the trick without the need for a format, I left alienware control centre and deleted everything else, I highly recommend to disable boosting if you haven't already.

  • I did the regedit to give mine the ability to turn off CPU boosting, it now runs at a nice 70 degrees in games.

Using Registry Editor, go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Power\PowerSettings\54533251-82be-4824-96c1-47b60b740d00\be337238-0d82-4146-a960-4f3749d470c7 and select Attributes. Modify the value of "Attributes" from 1 to 2. Data should read “0x00000002 (2)”. After that, go back in the Power Plan Options and a new option "Processor performance boost mode" will appear.

    • Do we need to change the value of "Processor performance boost mode" ?

      • I just disabled it on all plans, did a few benches in tomb raider and I lost 1 frame in ultra, in theory less power for the cpu should mean the GPU can use it with smart shift.
You might need to function f7 to get the high performance plan to show up if you are using alienware.

        • ok, so just disable it in both the options right?
i mean both in battery and plugged in.

          • @ozshopp3r: Yea thats what I did, maybe leave it on the high performance power plan (Fn F7) if you want to use that mode if you ever need full power.

  • Has anyone updated their win10 to ver 2014 yet? Is it stable by now?

    • +1

I did the day I got it, no issues except stuttering that is gone now i removed the dell bloatware.
