Cheaper than the clearance price of $1249 at JB HiFi

How the heck is a 2 year old phone being flogged at $1.25k as "clearance"? Crazy.

    • JB will price match this DJ office.

iPhones have been known to last longer than droids. I still have 4s as back up. Slow as but can still make calls, surf the net, msg, 2fa, YouTube, mp3, etc.

      • +8

Yeah as much as I prefer Android, Apple does have great support for their devices. Pretty much guaranteed updates for the next 4-5 years.

      • Yeah but who wants a 10 yo phone?

      • Yeah I have a 6 year old Android phone I picked up for $40 that still does all those things. I don’t think iPhones last any longer than Android if your needs are so basic. Even my Ancient Android can run all the social media apps like Facebook, WhatsApp, Snapchat and so on.

      iPhone

  • Would be a good buy with iOS 14 on its way.
And this model will be getting a few features previously only on the 11

    • +5

Yep. I am by no means an Apple fanboy (only own an iPad that isn't mine) but this will have years of support (the 6S is getting iOS 14).

It's the one thing I wish Android phones would have.

      • +3

What do you actual need "support" for? I always see people going on about it and I don't really get it.

        • Well my old phone was an iPhone 5s I still receive security updates etc but was excluded from the latest operating system

        • +1

Support translates to new functions / features & compatibility in software which you get as the years progress.
So you can seemingly get more out of the phone.

The other side would be zero updates, so you are just stuck software wise with what you walk out of the store with.

The ‘new’ functions & features are often subtle and included only in major updates, but they kind of give a refresh to your device.

          • @thebadmachine: I guess that makes sense, but surely you're happy with whatever your phone comes with if you're buying it? I've never even considered that and I'm a tech person.

            • @[Deactivated]: It kind of gives you something to look forward to I guess.
The major updates are once a year, if you buy a new iPhone you get at least 5 (years) major updates.

but surely you're happy with whatever your phone comes with if you're buying it?

Yes but it can start feeling old once you get used to it etc. The major updates give you a slight refresh and I guess you feel like you get part of the ‘new’ released iPhone, at least software wise.
(Obviously you miss out on the hardware updates like new camera etc)

        • +1

If the phone you paid hundreds of dollars for is supported for years, that is good value for money.

It's nice to receive the latest features which keeps your purchase relevant. Not sure why this is a hard concept for some people.

If it doesn't mean much to you, then why bother commenting?

          • @giventofly: Ease up turbo!

I've just never gotten a software update that really improved my life significantly - therefore I was wondering if I was missing something. To quote you, not sure why this is such a hard concept for some people!

            • +1

@[Deactivated]: Sorry for getting cranky, in the same way you see a lot of folks wanting updates, I also see folks asking why updates matter.

If people remained happy with how things were at the beginning, we wouldn't progress.

Updates generally bring better usability (look at the different versions of the OS from gen 1 to now) and performance improvements.

            • @[Deactivated]:

never gotten a software update that really improved my life significantly

Yeah that’s asking a bit much.

It just a consumerism thing I guess. Just keeping your attention / interest for longer.
Some are genuinely useful though, here are a few that caught my eye from iOS 14:

Back-tap - you can program a single or double tap of the back of the phone to a selection of functions.

Home screen widgets - you can select a widget from an app and select out of 3 different sizes on your home screen (Android users must be rolling their eyes at this)
But I think it will genuine be useful, it will be nice to have the ‘large’ calendar widget on the home screen so I can see a summary when I unlock (will make 2 actions of unlock - open calendar app) into just one.

              • @thebadmachine: Oh my word, iOS has widgets?! After how many years! hahaha. That is actually a good improvement, very cool.

              • +1

@thebadmachine: It's not just about the new "fancy" OS updates with new features. With always-connected internet devices (any smartphone), being stagnant means being a target for vulnerabilities/exploits/hacks. Security issues are coming up every day - a large portion of iOS updates add zero new features but patch previously unknown security flaws.

                • @darklight: Yes I was talking about ‘major’ updates.
Yes the updates in between the yearly major updates are mostly security ones, I do my best to keep the phone updated with these smaller updates as well.

MrWhoseTheBoss recently made a video about android vs iOS. He said (and I very much agree) that it doesn’t matter what operating system you are on. It’s basically just a “portal” to the apps on your phone.

I’ve tried both iOS and android (pixel/Samsung). I think iOS has better app optimisation and performance than android (better quality photos on Instagram on iOS, games on iOS etc.).

Sure updates may not be “life changing”, but it does make things a little simpler and refreshing. For example, the car key feature is brand new and it supported by the almost 5 year old iPhone 6s. If I’m paying 1k for a phone in 2020, I expect it to last at least 4 years or more and iPhones just does that with not much trade off in performance.

        • People talk up support for new features, but what generally happens as time progresses the new updates become more resource hungry and older hardware just doesn’t run it as well. Also older hardware because of this often will get like a new os update but won’t get all the features anyhow. Then some of the features Apple brings in are often features that Android users have had for years. Like iOS 14 is pretty much bringing a whole host of new Android features. I don’t get the obsession on these forums with having years of features updates either. As long as apps continue to work, and the browser displays all the sites I look at I’m happy. And speaking of that my iPad isn’t displaying one website I view properly, so I go to my old six years old Android tab that hasn’t been updated in years to display the site properly. XD I’m kind of hoping that iPad os 14 will mean hiding icons from my home screen would be easier. You know basic features that should have existed years ago in iOS but still isn’t there. That’s what updating an OS supposed to bring. Or being able to finally watch YouTube videos PIP Without going to efforts to make the iPad do it. Those would be wonderful features Android users had years back. What about fixing up the swype keyboard on iPad too? I’m guessing I’m asking too much from Apple. Lol

These security updates slows down your phone. My old iphone slows down and freezes even in safari, which was not the case when it was new

    • +1

What features will it be getting ‘previously only on the 11’?

      • +1

How is your 4 still operating? My 6 max/ plus whatever it was called is basically a brick now.

        https://www.macrumors.com/2020/06/22/ios-14-quicktake-iphone…

I believe there's quite a few other little tweaks

      • I’m running the iOS 14 dev beta on XS. The camera UI from the 11 series is now available for XS AND XR.

Surprisingly I’m getting way better battery life on my phone. That too on the very first developer beta! It’s not without bugs tho.

  • 1242 x 2688 pixels, 458 ppi density, OLED and it's a MAX - Nice price!

  • Killer price!

    Jesus.

  • This or the new iPhone SE $700 ?

    • +2

      of course this one

    • How big a phone do you want? SE is a 8S really, same as 6-8. So many reasons to spend the extra $350 on this.

    • If you want a better screen get this.

If you want something lighter and compact get the SE.

    • iPhone SE (2nd gen) will likely get slightly longer iOS updates if that’s what your after.

      iPhone SE (2020, A13 Bionic) / iPhone XS MAX (2018, A12 Bionic)

  • cant find any stock in Sydney. nearest showing 'Chadstone'

  • If anyone can listen, hold your tapping fingers. Just don’t go for 64 GB. I mean there is heck lot to do and you would quickly fill up ur space. Unless you go for iCloud or external drive.
    It’s just a mini computer.

    • +1

      Still on 16GB over here.

      • Pretty sure that’s not XS max. I too had 16 GB 2 years back with 5S. Damn this thing is machine.

        • Yes it is iPhone SE (1st gen).

    • +1

64gb is ample unless you need to access videos from over a year ago frequently. With more and cheaper cloud storage, we don’t need loads of HD space on phones anymore.

  • -1

Waiting for the 12 Pro Max 512gb this year. eBay plus watch being delivered tomorrow. I'll be all Apple'd out.

  • -3

    Wouldn't you rather a $3500 Android phone?

  • 1100 for a two year old(3 months later will become grandfather) with only 64gb memory (55gb usable?)? serious? come on

    • +5

It's an iphone mate. Rolex of the mobile phone world…timeless!

      • If by timeless you mean "4-5 years" then sure. It's better than an Android but it's still essentially disposable technology, because it's designed to be exactly that.

        • +1

Have a look at how much old iphones are being asked for. You'll be amazed. The years don't condemn. This is OLED not your normal res.

  • Got it price matched with JB HIFI over the phone :-)

    • -1

Damnn i would loved to get this phone but i have a brand new 11 from work. Damnn!
How is the image are you blown away?

      • Looks pretty cool when you push down on the live wallpaper. I have the 512 gig version of this in space grey

  • +1

got an iphone xs max 512GB at almost same price in last TGG offer, happy with it.

  • Decent software update. Don't really care who copies who. Just can't stand the notch. Hopefully they can release a model that has a full screen with no notch and no punchhole this year.

  • Wouldn't it make sense to get a refurb?

    • From the price differences I've seen I would say no

  • OW price beat?

  • -3

Over $1k for a 2 year old phone. Oh dear…

  • Sold out? Won't let me add to cart.

  • Wouldn’t the iPhone 11 64gb be a better buy for $100ish more?

    • +1

That's what I'd be doing. 2+ years more OS updates and a newer CPU vs OLED screen and keeping $100.

    • But that gorgeous oled screen

  • I was extremely sad for missing this.

By chance got onto the DJs website again and it was coming up $1097 again for collect only.

I managed to discover three in stock in Bourke St Melbourne for this price.

They now have two if anyone is interested ;)
