$.69.99 That is cheap not even a dollar?

    • Sorry for the trouble. Price has been updated.
      Thanks
      Cheers

  • What sorta batteries are recommended to go with these?

  • Are they waterproof

Thinking of installing some on the roof of my SUV to keep a car refrigerator on during the day

  • +1

I wouldn't recommend these cheap controllers. I've had 2 of them and both are unusable. Either the screws strip out at the terminals or the controller itself craps out. They are a generic made in china controller that comes in various colours. You will end up needing to replace with a decent one.

    • Any suggested ones that are ok?

      • I'm still going through that process myself so can't give a definitive answer as of yet sorry.

Here's a good recent video comparison of a few available here in Australia. The final price will depend on the size (amps) you go for to suit the total watts of your system. For example the Renogy in the video (40A) is around $200 but if you're using a single panel for camping then the 20A model is <$100.

        Check out the victron units.

I just put a 75 | 15 smartsolar in my caravan and it seems well built, does what is says and has bluetooth and a half decent app to monitor what's going on. IIRC I paid around $120.

        https://www.victronenergy.com/solar-charge-controllers/smart…

        • Yep I would agree (just from research only) that Victron are one of the best.

75/15 is pretty small. What size panel(s) are you running and what are you powering in the van?

          • @Villainous: Just a single 100w panel at this stage. Due to covid I haven't had a chance to use the 'new' (circa 1999) van at all since I bought it in feb, so not really sure how it'll go. I did a few sums and reckon the 75/15 will be plenty. Fridge is gas so if I'm off grid the 12V won't be very much at all (A few LED lights, small fans and phone charging).

        • Did you buy the solar panels from there as well?

        • "watts" Those controllers from your link look good but bit overkill for this panel only 100W and $70.

          • +1

@ozhunter68: The wattage of the panel isn't the only consideration when looking at charges. The one in this deal is a PWM whereas the Victron are MPPT. You might want to research the difference first to see the difference in performance. Also the point of a portable solar panel is to be "off the grid" out in the bush somewhere most likely running your fridge to keep your food fresh, charge devices etc or maybe in the event of a black out and so on. These cheap charges die very easily (i've had 2 and made that mistake already) then you're stuck without the power you bought to be self sufficient.

          • @ozhunter68: The 75 | 15 victron is probably the smallest capacity 'good' controller on the market so I don't think they're overkill if you want a quality controller. The price of panel you use it with is irrelevant IMO.

You might get a little cheaper if you ditch bluetooth, but I think it's worth it.

            • @watts: Thanks for the advice. I'm a solar newby hhaha.

Would also love a recommendation of a good value AGM battery for my off-grid adventures. 100-140AH

  • +1

very tempted at this price… any suggestions for the battery? ?

  • +1

victron all the way. I've done all this research a few years ago and have two 110AH AGM batteries and two 150W panels. I can take ice cream camping in summer, run a fan all night with Movies on the tablets and play music all day long. My batteries are alway full again by 10.30am

I assume the dimensions online are for the folded size? 675x540x70

Victron MPPT charge controller is a great choice for the price. Who makes the cells for this panel?

  • +1

any recommendations on a flexible 250/300watt solar panel to suit a Victron MPPT 75/15 controller?

  • Not entirely sure if this is a good deal.

I've found one on eBay that is the same specs and same price. Any opinions?

    • Looks pretty good for price. This one is more suited to mount on caravan/vehicle where the one listed by op is a stand alone unit for on the ground to move around if needed and has a bag.

  • If you want a standalone unit, there are some light weight ones on ebay for not too much more money, although a chance that durability suffers in getting the kgs off.
