Thrifty Customers Save $1000 on Used Cars @ Pickles

120

I received an email from Thrifty that since I'm a loyal customer I'm entitled to receive $1000 off the price of one of their second-hand cars. I had a look at what's on offer and most of them are no more than 2 years old, and I would imagine they've all had reasonably good service histories. Further, the email states:

Most cars come with a minimum 3-month / 5,000 kilometre warranty or the balance of the manufacture warranty.

I don't know if the displayed prices already have the $1000 discount applied or if that is applied later, there was no code in the email.
Apparently I can't read very well [facepalm] - the page clearly states that once you pay a deposit and start working with Pickles they will apply the discount for you. As posted below, this is also available to NRMA members, too, so that's another avenue to get the discount.

Example cars on offer in Brisbane right now are:

2018 Toyota Kluger $28 490
2019 Nissan Qashqai $18 240
2018 Toyota Yaris $12 990

I expect the range will change as new ones are added and others are sold.

Pickles fixed price cars are good buying. The majority are overpriced (similar to dealer prices), but if lucky or prepared to buy a less common brand you can pick up some serious bargains with most of them having complete service histories and have been professionally detailed/body issues fixed up prior to sale. You get 3 month warranty and 7 day buy back guarantee too. An extra $1000 off is a good deal if you find the right car at the right price.

    • how less common brand are we talking about?

      • Up to you. They get a lot of less popular brands. I've seen excellent deals on British, French and Italian cars. Merc and BMW are closer to dealer prices usually. But you just gotta keep your eyes out, and if they sit around too long they reduce the price until its sold.

Is it hard to become a thifty member

Basically, just hire something from them. I've rented from them a couple of times and didn't even realise I was a 'member' of anything.

  • Hi Op, where's the link to used cars on the Thrifty website? Or is this it? https://www.pickles.com.au/Campaigns/go-thrifty-pickles

    • A friendly Mod has just updated the deal link in the post for me. Reload the page and you should see it then.

  • I don't understand how the car warranty works, I thought rental use excluded a bunch of stuff, or will it have the normal car warranty applied?

  • in WA 2017 Toyota Kluger is $29,750 is higher than Brisbane's 2018 one

Tbh I wouldn't buy a rental car. It gets thrashed more often than not.

    • +1

I know most people say rentals get thrashed more, but I feel that with the ridiculous excess most people should be driving more carefully in rentals. At least I do.

      • There's a saying, the fastest car is a rental car. Jokes aside, most companies offer zero excess and travel insurance covers rental car excess as well. I guess it depends on your luck.

      • Agreed. Used to be in a job where I drove rental cars frequently.

The engines would get a workout (gotta test the performance of the rental buzz box at every opportunity, right!?) but really, modern engines get up to temp quickly and aren’t gonna shit themselves just from being floored.

But parking, opening doors etc. I was always super careful. Even spilling some water in the interior would make me nervous - definitely treated them better than my own cars. I’d buy one as long as it had a full service history.

    • Do all rental cars go to Pickles? I always wondered where they got their cars from.

  • thanks for that, i just found a car i like, well that i was fast :)

  • Naahh.. some cars say “service book” missing.. too dodgy for me.

    • +2

Yeah, avoid those ones. Just asking for trouble.

They will need to trim more than $1000 off those prices in the current market.
