What happens if the thieves turn off the power on your meter. Will this still work?

    • +4

No, not without the UPS. And you probably already know that. Right?

      • -7

        So why buy this then?

        • Buy Energex padlock for your meter box.

        • I'm not buying. I ran out of money cause no one bought my beef and barley.

        • IDK, but why not steal from many other houses without cameras.

    • +1

No, it wont work, but in doing so, the thieves will be recorded

      • the thieves will be recorded

I don't think that would be admissible as proof that they were the burgers.

        • +3

          they were the burgers

          No, they were hotdogs.

          • @dealhunter52: You don't eat pork though…

            • @jv: How did you figure? Appearances can be deceiving.

    • VESI padlock if you live in VIC.

    • If it loses power it will stop working like any other electrical appliance… BUT all you need to do is connect a UPS to this device good ones will also help prevent damage with lightning strikes and over and under-voltage protections which can damage equipment..etc..

You will not find much security systems at this price that includes battery backup and that your responsibility to supply a UPS… It's the same as if you use some of the battery-powered cameras such as Arlo… yes the camera might continue to work if the power is cut which can be an advantage BUT please keep in mind you also need to connect a UPS to your home router/wifi/Arlo base station..etc.. Else it just like this will loose power and no longer be functional.

      • argus 2 etc have micro sd onboard….. so, still functional, just a bit of a pain to recover footage….

        • Only thing with the wireless cameras whats to stop the thieves stealing them?

          • @notme: same thing that stops them stealing wired cameras…..

        • That is correct, if you are looking at the Reolink units some of there battery camera's do allow for SD cards which is great and offer an extra layer of protection but you will still lose access to the camera's (Eg, not get notifications, be able to connect/mitor..etc.. I probably should have used the word 'fully functional' in the case if the comparison to say the Reolink battery-operated camera's but in the say of say Arlo, without a UPS most security camera systems will not function very well if the power is cut unless you have planned for this (and you generally should as UPS's to power the cameras would not be that expensive)…

I guess my main point to jv is it's very common to require a battery backup unit for any security system and any IT equipment it's connected to as well (routers, switches..etc.)… many seem to miss or not understand this and is what I'm trying to assist in help JV out.

Hi, Is it possible to get one with 4 x 5MP Cam RLC-410

    Please advise, Thanks a lot

    • These camera systems are in the FBA warehouse, we couldn't change the package content. I guess you prefer an RLK8-410B4-5MP system. Sorry that it is out of stock these days, it will become available in June. We will consider running a deal after that. We appreciate your kind understanding.

  • I purchased the 4 x camera NVR deal from last week and have been really impressed with the quality, ease of setup/use and features for the price. It's still early days but would recommend based on my experience with Reolink so far.

    • Did u DIY or get someone to install it for you?

      • +1

Legally you are supposed to get a licensed electrician but honestly it is just a plugging in 1 ethernet cable and you are done.

It is PoE and the camera uses 12VDC at like 2-4 watts.

I'm assuming here you went up the roof and did the drilling and wiring? Was the 18m cat5 metre length sufficient? Also, i reckon they should have supplied a cat6 for better bandwidth since it's running at 5 MP.

          • @hotchoc: I think for the 1 that is really far away I will just use like a Female-Female connector and add another ethernet cable to make it go all the way.

I think Cat5 is fine since the max bandwidth this things would use is about 50Mb/s each.

          • @hotchoc: The resolution (MP) of a camera doesn't determine the bandwidth it uses. CAT6 is will offer no improvement as CAT5 is plenty for these cameras.

For example, my Hikvision cameras are 4MP, but I can adjust the bitrate from 256Kbps to 16Mbps - well within the rated 100Mbps of standard CAT5.

The only benefit it'll offer is better shielding, which isn't really required for these cameras.

I installed myself and found it pretty easy. My only real concern was that the mounting brackets for the dome cameras are plastic and look like they might break or become damaged over time, but they do the trick.

The 18m cables were sufficient to reach where I wanted to position 3 of the cameras and I purchased a 30m cat6 cable to run one through conduit out to the carport. Even at that length, the signal and throughput were sufficient with no discernable drop in signal or quality.

The app is easy to use and the sound quality captured by the built-in mics is pretty impressive. Overall, pretty happy.

        • Did you happen to check what sort of HDD came bundled? Wondering if it comes with surveillance class WD Purple or equivalent.

          • @dealhunter52: I didn't as it was already installed in the NVR. I'll take a look.

  • Any deal on the 4 x 5MP PoE Camera RLC-520

    • They had one like 3 days ago for $480. Unfortunately it was a lightning deal.

      • Yeah missed that one. Was watching the video and by the time i wanted to buy it was all gone. W

    • Hi, sorry that the RLK8-520D4 (with 4 x 5MP PoE Camera RLC-520 as you mentioned) is out of stock now. We will arrange a deal in June after the RLK8-520D4 becomes available again. We appreciate your kind understanding.

  • These have a built in microphone

Just an FYI its illegal to record audio in NSW for surveillance purposes

    • you can turn off voice recording in the app/software.

  • Thoughts on video doorbell to accompany? avoiding subcriptions?

  • Does this system require a subscription to view online?

    • Reolink products come with 2-year warranty. The subscription is optional for an extending 6-month warranty. You can live view the system without a subscription.

      • So for this advertised unit, you can simply save the video onto the harddisk. You can view the live video however you can't view the prerecorded videos online unless you have a subscription, correct?

        • You can also playback the stored videos at no subscription, all functions are free to use in Reolink software. BTW, sorry for my misleading text 'The subscription is optional for an extending 6-month warranty'. There's a product registration (also free) for extending a 6-month warranty, not subscription.
