Got an email from Repco saying Sydney Tools have got 25% off selected tools.

Looks to be some good stuff in there, even large kits like this 360 piece cabinet set normally worth $1500, down to $1124.

Horrible store. I'll steer clear of them. The online store does not reflect what they actually have in stock.

Your order will get lost and you have to constantly chase them up for refund. Took a month before I could get a refund on my order AND that was after threatening to file a complaint with fair trading.

  • At any price Sidchrome is not worth the money. I tried a brake line spanner, either the head just opened slightly or the fit was too wide as it wanted to round the fitting. I used my own, nothing flash I think its KC Tools, worked perfectly.

    • They're definitely not what they used to be when they were Aussie made. I think Stanley/Black & Decker bought them out in the early 90's and they went downhill when they stopped aussie production. I still don't mind them for occasional use.

    • Sidchrome is a decent mid-range/price brand to buy as a set and then replace with better quality as you break the abused pieces.
Got my kit as an apprentice mechanic and swapped bits out with Snap-On (abused and broken) or Repco (lost - always the 10mm socket) bits.

      • If I was buying with interim in mind, Id buy from say Kincrome, KC or SP before Sidchrome. Same price range.

You will never lose a socket (aside from dropping it inside something you cant get too) if everything has its place, and is never just removed from the ratchet and sat on the inner guard, windscreen or wherever you happen to be, and the tool chest with its rightful places is checked over before the car moves.

I still have Aussie Sidchrome offset double end ring sets Ive had since I was 19 or so.

        • It was 10 years ago and they had some crazy apprentice special for the exact amount of Ruddys apprentice cash handout. I often see the same kit at Bunnings on sale these days and id buy it again, have only had a couple of sockets crack from use on rattle guns (bought impact set a bit later).

Haha yes, those exact spots! I liked to think of it as sharing your tools as would often find tools in those spots on new customer vehicles.

    • I've had a couple of Sidchrome sets (the 'New' Sidchrome not the 'good' Sidchrome) for 15-20 years now. They've taken plenty of abuse and are still fine. My only issue with them (and it's a common complaint) is that the plastic handles come off the ratchets occasionally. I was going to warranty them but I CBF. According to a Sidchrome rep if you silicon them back on then they won't come off again.

  • i bought a lawn mover from them ages ago, needed a receipt (that they couldnt provide on the day due to some system problem) to claim a redemption thing from makita has to call them almost every day for about 2 weeks to try get this receipt eventually spoke to a "manager" told me he had sent it over a dozen times, checked the email address, the mailboxes nothing. told him i aint hanging up until i get it in my email, did i get my receipt. pricing is alright especially on promos, but wouldn't shop otherwise, poor service, heard nightmares about their warranty support.

also was getting there promotional emails they were price gouging pretty hard on n95 mask (10 pack for $99?) and other ppe at peak corona

    • Lol.. i heard stories about their plans on price gouging during then and how much they will probably make from it

feel sorry people but, at the end of the day about demand and supply.

I have vowed never again. The guys just sit at the desk and look on the computer and spin the monitor around so you can see the specs on Sysney Tools qebaite. They offer no advice or have no knowledge.

PS: also hardly any prices listed on the items in store.

    • usually stuff in bargain boxes don’t have prices marked, so you need to ask and staff are less than enthusiastic.

they opened on port melbourne and i had hoped they’d be a disruptor to bunnings, total tools and just tools, but not to be.

      no killer prices ,

      • There isn't much money in tools hence the small disparity between stores. (talking maybe 5%)

They make tens of millions from their generic brands because their margins are anywhere from 3-10 times.

Worst part is their sales people want to sell you this because guess what, they make HUGE commission on those.

However, if you know your stuff. Their branded stuff ain't too badly priced.

  • My online deliveries from ST have both been very very slow - do not rely on them if needing it quick.

An in store purchase where I actually misread the shelf price saw them selling me to at my misread price which was well below what was already a good price.

I need a large oil pan so I will be making use of the repco code - looked it up before reading this and it all worked fine.

What I do not understand is the relationship between Repco (big corporate) and ST (family business). Anybody know why this "deal" is happening?

    • I have a version of that 16lt oil pan, perfect for diesels. Enough space for slop when emptying and the spout fits in oil bottles. If not used daily, clean with a cheap spray can of degreaser into the same bottle. Its my go to at home if I can get it under the car.

I saw the REPCO thing too, no idea.

  • No good experience with them. Bought new workbench arrived faulty, after almost 6 months still wait for part to come, even though they have the same product for sale in-store.

Share your favourite Sydney Tools experience below.

My favourite ST visit was the very first (and last) time I visited a store. There was a full blown fist fight out the front of the store. One was a customer and the other was an employee. It was insane.
Anyway. I walked in and asked to pick up an electric drill which I was told over the phone was in stock. Surprise surprise, it wasn’t in stock.
I walked out and the guys were sitting in the footpath swearing at each other. They were too worn out to fight. It was a surreal experience.

      Should've tagged in…

  • it's because the company is still family run, very unprofessional.

The bosses are tight af, micromanage everything(literally.. everything.. talking even under $50 invoices) and they want to expand (hence the store expansions) but they under staff because they don't want to pay for more people.

The workers are overworked probably because they know a few stores will close in their grand plans.

Should have a read of their workplace reviews

All warranty and everything are dealt really poorly.

Anything that escalates goes to one guy and hes a strung up. If he dislikes you or you try to escalate with him, forget it…

It's not even his main job, hence the poor service

They make sure they reach just enough so they don't get in trouble because they have in house lawyer to make sure they are within their rights.
