FWIW these are great. I have them in the kids’ rooms so they can listen to podcasts. They also work like an intercom so I can make an announcement to all echo devices (and Sonos) that dinner is ready, etc and they all get the announcement.

Your home sounds like a cool place

      • Haha thanks mate it goes alright

Agree. I got 3 from price error at JB few months ago. The speaker itself have very good quality sound, Alexa is a great bonus if you wanna control your house.

You can say Drop in xxx such as kitchen to communicate

      • I wish I bought more. I got one not realising how good they were 😭

  • Google Home is now around the same price at $79. Let the competition for the lowest price begin.

  • thanks Op. bought one! great price!

The Echo Dot is currently $49, down from $79.

  • What's the speaker like? Thinking of getting one to play rain/waves while sleeping.

I am sure you wouldn't be needing bass for that and this will just be fine. I play rain sound on my Google home all the time and this shouldn't be much different.

    • I use the smaller Echo Dot for exact same role and sound from such a small device is deceptively good.

With this larger Echo version, one would assume better sound at louder volume but at low bedtime volume, a slight improvement?

My main use for Alexa is voice automation not music. :)

    • A dot is good for that so this should be fine too. I have both

  • Wonder which is better Google Home or Echo? I already got a google home max but would like something smaller in the reading room… hmmm…

    • obviously if you already have a google home max you should pick the mini. Being in the eco-system is a very convenient way of controlling these devices.

    • The routines are great, not sure if Google has the same functionality.
The broadcast and 'drop in' features are excellent for Alexa devices.
But it's better to stay in one ecosystem - maybe sell the Max and get the Echo equivalent?

  • I invested a few google homes and they're great when they works. I find that i have to repeat my commands twice most of the time and it's annoying.. just wondering if amazon alexa has better voice recognition? thinking of switching to the amazon family if they listen to commands better. Anyone here have both and can share their experience?

    • I found myself repeating a lot more often with Google for certain tasks.. some music choices it made were totally off and I was just saying Hey Google too often.
Part of the reason I tried Alexa.

The only Alexa i sometimes struggle with is the echo-dot in my bathroom. Not sure if it is because they dont have as many mics (4) as the bigger one here (7) or its the volume vs literal-echoing of the room.
Apart from that im fine around the rest of the apartment.

My girlfriend though can sometimes hate them.. but she is often unclear and broken speech pace

I'm finding the recognition pretty much the same between them, but there's been times when my Google minis have picked up things I've said well away from it while in a different room (giving command to my phone, when it pops up command answered on another device) that amazed me how sensitive it is (and scared me a little to be honest)

Certain things are just easier with Google, such as playing a radio station. Google I just say play this station and it does.
Alexa I need to specify play station on TuneIn etc.

I found music to be best on Alexa with Amazon Music. Now I've only got Spotify it's not quite as good (for example just telling Amazon Music to play a certain genre seemed to give better results than with Spotify which always tries to play some playlist which isn't quite right)

I have 2 Echo's and honestly, once the novelty wears off you realise how dumb they are (all these smart speakers). We have a long way to go before we get real A.I. In saying that I use Alexa to turn some lights on and off but nothing that wouldn't be just as easy (or faster) to control by other means.

    • Same here. Im slowly warming to the idea of switching from Google assistant to Alexa. Google assistant just doesnt work well with my sonos speakers either.

  • I'm all echos at the moment but got the Google Nest Hub today because I wanted to try out the Chromecast feature.

I had purchased the Echo Show 5 thinking it had the same capability but it doesn't.. They talked about supporting it AGES ago but nothing has happened since.

  • are all the companies trying to take advantage of the lockdown to get their devices into our homes?

    literally in our house:

    had apple Siri first

then got google minis throughout the house and that snatched Philips hue from siri.

now if I get Alexa reckon that would snatch control from google lol.

  • Bargain. I just have so many dots to offload. :-)

  • i have 2 of these setup for ambient music in the study and they're great. Just don't crank them up too loud unless you have the separate sub.

    • Dots or Echo 3rd gens?

      • 3rd gen echos

        • Wow and even then don't turn it up too loud?

      • If you can get 2 echo for the price of 1 Sonos One, I'd go echos for sure unless you listen to a lot of heavier stuff.

  • In theory the sound of these is the same as the Echo Plus 2nd gen. They do look the same and the sound specs are the same, and the reviews indicate they are the same.

But they're more powerful than the Echo Plus. I've have a paired setup with an Echo Plus 2nd gen, Echo 3rd gen plus Echo Sub. On the default settings the Echo is considerably louder than the Echo Plus. I played with the equaliser settings and was able to get them sort of matched, but with the price of this I'm going to get another Echo so that they work correctly when paired.

    Great value at $79.a

    • I'm tempted to get an Echo Studio, as this is the first time I've seen them discounted. Or whether two Echos in stereo would be better. Already have the Echo Sub.

  • Damn, bought this a month or so ago when $119 was the discounted price haha!

Personally I chose these over Google because of the integration of Apple Music, and the more mature routines library. Also, I found having to use two apps on iOS and a very messy interface for control put me off Google as well.

  • I prefer these over Google Home or mini. The google range have an issue maintaining bluetooth connections. It's an ongoing issue that's at least a year old and they've only admitted to the problem recently, but still no fix yet. The echo sound quality is also better than the Home in my opinion.
