  • Lackluster specs for the price, not sure if it is a good deal.

    • Lackluster? Not for that price

It's a business ultrabook. They don't depreciate very fast even if the processor is 2 years old.

      • This one, for example:

        https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-Lenovo-ThinkPad-E14/39256709…

        AU $1,461.31 (before PLUME15)

As always the devil is in the details. For the extra $193.84, the T480S in the OP has, over the E14:
          - 370g lighter (1.32kg vs 1.69kg)
          - Longer battery life (57wh battery vs 45wh)
          - Thunderbolt 3
          - Carbon-fibre/magnesium construction vs platic/aluminium construction
          - Max 24gb RAM (vs 16gb max)
          - Proper dock connector instead as well as USB-C/Thunderbolt options, instead of just USB-C docks.
          - Intel NIC instead of Realtek NIC
          - Opal 2.0 SSD (self-encrypting)
          - Integrated SD card reader
          - Match-On-Chip fingerprint reader (vs conventional match-on-host)

Suddenly the price discrepancy starts to make more sense, doesn't it? :)

Advantages of the E14 over the T480S
          - Newer gen CPU
          - Discrete graphics
          - Bluetooth 5 vs 4.1

If the laptop is going to be used mostly at home, the E14 is undoubtedly a good option. But there's no doubt in my mind that the T480S will be built to a higher standard than the E14.

The CS18 side-dock connector, while not quite as foolproof as the old style connector that was located on the underside of the dock, is still IMHO a better, neater option than USB-C/Thunderbolt docks. As a long-time user of multiple different docks, I just have a better experience overall with proprietary docks over USB-C, despite the theoretical brand-agnosticism of USB-C docks. I've seen issues with PD not reliably working through USB-C docks, dock-connected devices not being detected, external displays not working properly etc, whereas the system-specific docks work every time. In probably 15+ years, AFAIK, HP has only had two common proprietary docks - the original drop-in dock, and from 2013 onwards, the Ultra Slim 2013 side-dock.

And when the docks have been around for a while, they're often available much cheaper used than buying a new USB-C PD dock. The last Lenovo Ultradock I bought cost me $20 with a 135w power supply, and the HP UltraSlim 2013 that I got just under 2 years ago cost me $40 from eBay delivered with a charger, from memory.

8gb is soldered. There is an empty slot for more.

Just to preclude the usual screeching about 8 gigs.

  • I have one of these as my supplied work laptop, a very solid piece of kit.

    • Me too. Lighter and slimmer than the 13.3” Toshiba Tecra R30 it replaced.

      • Mine's been specced up a bit too, RAM, touchscreen, lit keypad. etc Also got the usb-c dock gen 2 for the WFH.

        • Managed to get the same here too, no idea how. Also scored a refurb thunderbolt dock from Grays. Bargain…once they managed to send me the correct (T3) cable.

  • There new T495 is probably a better buy. R5 3500U 8GB/256GB and 1.33kg was under $1400 last night on Lenovo.com
