      "Apart from the 5Gb"
Lucky it has 5Gb then, isn't it :P

This is a good deal for the data alone.

    • +18

Apart from the 5GB, theres nothing special about this deal..

That's why I posted it mate, 5gb of data alone is a good deal for $29 and on top of that $500 credit… first thing that comes to mind is OzBargain.

      • +5

Funny thing is this deal was released 2+ weeks ago and well no one posted it here until xDEFiNE ! Good On Ya for Not being a Couch OzBargainer ! lol

        • +9

I didn't know about it, but seems you did and withheld information!

That sir, is a chargeable offence under section 9 of the Ozbargain Etiquette Amendment Act 2008 (Cth)

Besides, 44+ votes and counting. Just think, could have been you.. shame, shame, shame! LOL

    • +2

Apart from the 5GB data and the $500 credit, theres nothing special about this deal..
      Oh wait it cost $30.

      Bargain!

    • +1

It's not a bad deal in the first place but it's great to know we can use voip apps.

  • +3

Now if you could show your 'woolies' operator logo and get 5% off groceries…

  • If I wasnt on my stupid plan id jump on it esp for the 5GB

  • +1

One thing I don't like about their internet is that they charge per MB (whereas e.g. Vodafone charges per 25KB increments), so you'll probably end up using 5GB a lot quicker.

    • +1

But you also get 45 days to use it instead of 30. I'd definitely prefer the longer expiry period.

    • I've been on it a couple of days. My data usage app says I have 4.873 Mb left. The balance from them says I got 4.89Gb left. So that isn't an issue so far

    • +1

Does that mean if you check your email it'll get rounded up to 1MB?

      • +3

Yes. I learned the hard way with optus (they count by 10mb). Ran out of 3gb in a couple of days from setting android to check emails/facebook/weather.

        • Ditto, I think. Used up the 3gb data on the MyTab in a few weeks, and called up Optus and complained and asked for an explanation of when and where this data was used, since there's no way it was anywhere near 3 GB for checking the news and reading a few emails. Turns out Optus don't have any web site for showing data usage or remaining data for prepaid accounts, plus they don't log sites you connect to due to privacy reasons. Which doesn't sound so bad, except that there is no way to see whats happening with your data, other than texting "balance" to 9999 all the time - and even then you can only see how much remains, not when or where it's being used.

When I expressed my annoyance and intention to complain to the TIO since I couldn't see how I could have used 3 GB, they just credited me with another 3 GB of data. So I never got an explanation, but strongly suspect that it was a combination of android automatically using tiny amounts of data + the massive 10mb optus increment. I turned off most of the android settings, but it definitely put me off optus for data, and made me very wary of carriers who use large data increments.

        • Hmm. I am on the above woolies mobile prepaid sim. I have had it for nearly 30 days now. I have a Nexus S. Synching facebook, gmail, google reader, google+, twitter. Have a few apps. Have got updates for some apps over the air. I don't use the normal in-built mail app though. Only the gmail app for email.

I do use wifi at home (and in fact, an app called "wifi at home" to help me turn wifi on and of automatically depending on whether I am at home).

I just texted 'balance' to 9999. It said I have 4.19 GB remaining. 3G watchdog (a download watching app) says I have used 803.98 MB. Which works out roughly the same.

I wouldn't be too concerned with their 'session size' usage policy. Seems to have very little impact.

        • Yup. I wont be too concerned either. I've been using for 2 weeks, with google maps, fb, IM, mail etc. This was a concern of mine initially. I jumped in after waiting for comments on whirlpool from other users reporting no probs.

    • +3

I tried amaysim also another optus brand 1gb took less then 1 week to finish! Wen i called up they say they charge per session/per click so if ur on ozbargain.com and it has 3 adds on the side they charge 3 sessions = 3mb and each click/link you press they charge a session too.. I checked my data log and it shows in 45seconds I used 23mb! When I complain they say that's how they charge. . Big data rort!

      • I wouldn't use Amaysim unless you went for the $39 unlimited, again really only if you need it.

        • Would you know what Telstra's increments are?

  • +6

Data is charged in 1MB increments for uploads and downloads within Australia

    • +11

What I meant was that usually other telcos like Vodafone charge at minimum 25kb each session. WW Mobile's is 40 times more. That mean just by refreshing your FB/Twitter timeline or receiving mails, etc., will cost you 1mb every time. Divide 5gb by 40 and you'll 125mb..

      • Sorry accidental neg! was meant to + you.

      • +3

That's not right… They'll round your data usage up to the 1MB..
ie if you used 2.33MB you'd be "charged" 3MB.
Virginmobile also charge by the MB and I never get even close to exceeding my 1.5GB allowance per month. I have 2 email accounts, Facebook synced with my Contacts and Calendar, Apps update automatically, I check Amazon AppStore daily for their free deals and regularly use my phone browser when out and about to check OzB and other sites.

  • Does anyone know if you can use Internet tethering/personal hotspot with woolies?

    • +1

TOS says no, but how will they know?

      • +1

TOS say no, but they advertise it as a feature of the Android phones they're pushing.. If they cancelled your contract, you'd have a very good case in court!

        • I have used it a few times fine, on this prepaid and with a nexus S.

Haven't got a nasty email or call or anything from anyone.

  • Yep i'm pretty sure you can, as long as your android phone supports it. This makes it even more of a deal for me, enough data on a phone plan and I don't need to buy a Pocket WiFi.

    • Yer, if I can tether I'm gonna get it. Currently with optus and they don't allow it with prepaid, has to be post paid

      • +1

Well I'm currently using a Huawei Sonic unlocked android phone and have no problem creating a WiFi hotspot, so I don't see why not. That's a bummer about the post paid though..

      • You could try to use a tethering app of some sort. It'd work, but you're risking Optus disconnecting you (as it's against their Terms of Service). My girlfriend (who is currently in the USA on Virgin Mobile USA) tethered her phone for months and nothing happened, even though the carrier didn't allow tethering.

  • -6

    Is this Vodafail?

    • +24

      No. You fail.

    • +4

But Optus is still having network congestion issue right?

      • +2

Not sure about Optus, but Virgin Mobile are having serious data issues / congestion at the moment. I can barely use the 300 MB I have with my Virgin Mobile prepaid, since it doesn't work half the time I try to use it!

        • +2

Yeah I was using Virgin Mobile prepaid previously. And Virgin Mobile and TPG Mobile use Optus' network so that's why I think with WW Mobile it will still experience the same issues too..

      • No real problems in Adelaide…
There's definitely slow periods (especially in Peak usage times - ie after aschool till 10pm), and possibly issues in the CBD during business hours, but I get great data speeds in the suburbs while at work.

      • Yes, its useless

  • Do they have micro sim cards for the iphone? I'd love to switch to this plan.

    • +3

Pack says not for iphone. But i managed to snip mine with a scissors and it works

      • +4

I work for safeway, and there is a message on some of the promo signs in store saying if you need a micro sim for iphone etc go to the service desk… although my store hasn't gotten the micro sims yet, at least to my knowledge (p.s just signed up to let you know :P)

        • I got mine 2 weeks ago, so it's kind of too late for me. I remember flipping every single pack, to see every one of them "Not for iphone"

      • Not cheap for dx, but could use this http://goo.gl/x0JA1

        • I figured the SIM card was only $2. And I wont be cutting too many of them (hopefully)

  • +2

Do note that the T&Cs state that mobile tethering and use in a non-mobile device (ie pocket wifi) is not allowed, though how much effort that put into enforcing this rule is unclear.

    • It means they can block all the P2P and web hosting ports they want and you can't complain about it.

  • +2

I dont think I could use 5gb on my mobile if I tried.

    • +3

5gb charging by 1mb will drain ur data real quick, trust me I had it..data from optus is a rort

      • +1

As long as your device doesn't attempt to reconnect all the time then it's not bad.

        • You can get widgets that prevent it accessing the web when you don't want it to - APN on-off widget is one that works well. Free is always good too.

    • Easy, install aDownloader and start downloading torrents

        • +7

I use optus for calling them penguins in Antarctica =)

      • yeah, and I was planning to use it to call my new friend who is offering me 50 per cent of his 12million that's tied up in the US.

    • I think this is about the average call rate with the flag fall compare to what I get charged on Virginmobile. about $2 every minute to Taiwan.

Hey….at least these let u use on the international calls…postpaid doesnt.
But of coz u'll use it up fairly quick when u only have $250 to use on intl calls.

      "Norfolk Island 6723 $25.06 $25.06"
      WOW ಠ_ಠ
Even Italy is $6 per minute! Crazy.

    • Who uses a mobile to call internationally? Bad enough calling a landline in Aus…

      • +1

        I do, as I don't have a land-line at the moment.
It doesn't have to be expensive, btw:

(sorry, don't want to hijack original post :))

        • +1

There's always Skype for international calls. Gotta use some of that 5GB data right?

    • +3

I'm currently with Hello Mobile, Unlimited talk International + Unlimited talk Local(Land&Mobile) all @25c FLAGFALL, Data 3c/MB, valid for 90days, for me its been a bargain since i don't use my phone that often and the times i do i can talk for hours or atleast leave it on even if nature calls…, been a BARGAIN for me ! lol

      • wow - thanks for this - Ill look it up..have been looking for something just like this

      • Unlimited international talk at 25 c flagfall? How come? Can you kindly explain a bit further?

        • Yea Unlimited mainly to Asian countries…, dirt cheap to other countries too…, I REALLY DON'T know how the hell they make money, but it saved me from a contract.

In terms of coverage, its on the Vodafail Network, but since my phone is 850Mhz compatible and available in most of the areas I visit, never have I come across less than 4 BARS of signal. Really pleased with Hello Mobile thus far !

        • Most likely it will connect somewhere locally, then get routed via a VOIP service overseas.

Stupid post - ESPECIALLY the 300 line copy/paste.

For gawd's sake, edit it and remove all that crap.

    • So 7 people here think i don't have the right to warn my fellow ozbargainers about higher charge on international calls.that is ok.MOD please delete my comment.thank you and have a good night.

  • +1

looks nice a nice deal as it's not a once off bargain.
Seems it's here to stay. I think once my postpaid runs out…i'll be getting this for every family member

45 days expire date means 24 months plan will be cut down shorter byt 1.5 times….which is…….16 months!!

Looks like the prepaid quota $250 can be used for international calls too.
and yes…5GB by itself is GREAT! get a iphone or android…then no need pocket wifi any longer!!

    • +3

      with the 8 months shorter ===> $29 x 8 = 240 for u to buy a prepaid unlocked mobile phone.
Should be a pretty decent phone for 240 off the web if not looking for the latest and newest stuff.

    • Since it is using Optus' data network, I don't think you'll use much with the bad internet if you're staying in metropolitan areas..

  • Wow. I'm 30 a month for 1gb at the moment:o

I bet the folks at Apple are gritting their teeth at Woolworth's using an "apple" logo to sell mobile phones and services. I'm guessing Apple (rightfully) lost the trademark dispute they initiated a year or two ago? :P

    • +1

I did an assignment for my (I want her to be) gf and found out that Apples had already withdrawn their applications to the IP Australia on 19/04/2011. Practcally Apple has lost the case and had to walk away (bitterly).

      • +6

I did an assignment for my (I want her to be) gf

Pussywhipped, much? Haha. Thanks for the update on the Apple trademark case, though. :)

    • +3

Always thought that the woolies icon was a green pumpkin. :D

      • Apple should sue God lol. Woolies describes their icon an apple with a leaf on their applications though.

Jump22: Pretty much lol. I'm very submissive to hers. With an interior motive.

        • Did you mean ulterior motive?
Or does interior motive mean you have a motive on the interior of your jocks?

        • Why would Apple sue God? God had his trademark on apple long before Apple did, so if anything God should sue Apple.

    • Lol sorry for my broken English, yeah ulterior motive is what I meant.

@Nookular: applying the 'I want to do so' principle they can. My beloved motherland applies it as well.

LiveConnected shits all over this deal.

    • You're right, but insincere about it.

  • +1

    Supermarkets ain't just supermarkets anymore.

Yeah, $29 for the 5Gb and 45 days is a good deal already when compared to the competition. I still prefer Amaysim's $9.90 for 1Gb data pack. I don't use mobile internet all that much… I have internet at work, at home and free wifi at Uni. Only need the occasional data on field trips.

Now, will Woolworths stop you using a Woolworths mobile at a Woolworths petrol station? :-P

    • +1

"Let's not blow things, out of proportion."

  • This is a great deal, I only wish the expiry was longer. 90 days would suit me as an occasional user. Keeping my eye out for a deal like that!

    • Yeah, I wouldn't mind a longer expiry of 90 days, even if they had to reduce the quota down to say 4Gb. But that's just based on my usage patterns.

  • +2

If you want the 5GB data for a mobile hotspot/teether then it's pretty good value…

Notable: 10% off* your recharge when you present your registered Woolworths Everyday Rewards card in participating stores. (That's down to $26.1)

    Else:

If you are going to use the Optus network:

    http://www.tpg.com.au/mobile/plans.html

    http://liveconnected.com.au/index.php/sim-only/pioneer

    http://liveconnected.com.au/index.php/sim-only/pioneer-plus

    http://www.amaysim.com.au/

    There's more…

    • Does the Everyday Reward Card cost anything to get?

I never did pick one up… not sure if it was because I don't have a Qantas Frequent Flyer account or if one had to pay. But if I can get a discount on this, I might just pick one up. $26.10 for 5GB that lasts 45 days is decent for the months I need more data.

      • +2

No charge for the Everyday Rewards card, it's like a Flybuys card

  • This might be a stupid question, but i know nothing about how mobile phones work… If you were to move from an optus plan to this, would you have to change your number? I assumed you would which is what is holding me back from changing to a deal like this…

    • You should be able to "port" your number across, make sure you're no longer contracted to Optus before you apply to port, otherwise you'll be charged a heft Early Termination fee.

    • If you are on a "Plan" it usually means that you are paying off a phone. See, when you are on a plan, the phone isn't "really" free, but you are paying installments. Also, some plans offer a special deal if you contract for a year or something.

Once the phone is paid off, and your contract is ended then you can leave the plan for free. If you wish to leave earlier, then you'll have to pay a premium. Only YOU can look at what you signed up for and see what is involved.

You may have to port your phone unmber across, but it MIGHT not be required. This is something you need to speak to Woolworths about.

Or just read the FAQ… http://www.woolworthsmobile.com.au/faqs.html

    • U don't have to change number. It took me about 20 mins to get switched to new SIM card(2 weeks ago)

  • Since it is close to $30… Buy the recharge when you do other shopping at WW and you can also get the 4c (or sometimes 8c) off fuel discount.

    • Fuel discount voucher is a joke.independent servos are selling at least 4 cents cheaper anyway.coles and wollies are playing games with innocent customers .

  • So if anybody has optus 'Yes' time, can they still call someone with the woolies prepaid mobile for free still?

  • Nice! Is there rollover for any unused credits at the end of 45 days?
