    Reminder set, thanks dealbot! :)

    • what happened to the dry noodles deal with the chicken on fire? im waiting for those again

  • Too hot deal, like the noodle

    • -5

      seriously? too hot?

      • +2

        His eyebrows says everything!

  • nice find op!

    • +7

These are some of the most popular and highest quality instant noodles available.
That being said, there was an incident specifically with the ones manufactured in China that had some plastic material mixed in. Recalled quite quickly and obviously they are not made out of plastic on a regular basis.

This is also the reason why the ones sold in Australia are marked with a big "MADE IN KOREA" on the front.

      • +1

yeah make.sure u get the more made ones and not china made

    • +43

You're meant to eat the noodles inside, not the packaging.

  • Great, is OP really going to take some to Korea?

    • +12

It's cheaper here than in Korea!

      • +4

But if you're already in Korea why don't you just eat real thing from local restaurant (I haven't been to korea, so it a serious question).

        Unless it's North Korea 😁

        • +4

local korean restaurant would use this exact product… unless its a higher end place

        • A lot of Korean food vendors use the noodle cake from this in their dishes.

      • A girl at work keeps telling me these are hotter than the ones you get in Korea. Do you find that too?

        • No, not really very similar. Unless you get ttopoki with noodles which is called llaboki which is much more spicy.

  • Does anyone know where I could buy ichiran ramen in Sydney Perth or Melbourne? Preferably Perth. Thanks.

    • +1

I assume you are asking for the instant version, not the restaurant.
I saw them sold at Miyu Japan on newcastle street, Northbridge but it is quite expensive.

I can not remember how much it is, but def more than 10 bucks for 1 box.

      • +1

About $20 for two packs or $40 for five packs going by Sydney prices

      • I bought a box of 5 packets in Okinawa for $24aud.
Thanks, I will check them out. 💐

    • +5

      Model?? 💃🕺

    • +2

And Australian wine is double the cost in China. What possible explanation could there be for such differences!?!

    • +5

First of all, we are not in China.

Second, the average income in Australia is way above double what you get in China.

Might be half the price in China, but your income will be nowhere within sniffing distance of what you get here.

Maybe it's just me, but I think that's a good tradeoff.

    • +2

Half price with a side of coronavirus. Bargain.

  • +18

To all the uninitiated/newly initiated, whilst Nongshim's Shin Ramyun is a good gateway instant noodle, much like Indomie's Migoreng is, if you've ever wondered "is this it? Is this as good as instant noodles gets?", or if you begin to get bored of shin ramyun, then make your way to your Asian grocers and look out for ramyun/ramen variants such as Kimchi and Budae jjigae (army stew). These flavours offer a nice tangy/sweet twist to the soup base (which I prefer) and sometimes marketed to have a more chewy noodle.

Price will vary from shop to shop, I would consider anything under $5 to be on special (lower the better!). Brands like Nongshim, Samyang, Paldo are great in my opinion.

    • +4

samyang is great if you want to start a spicy food challenge..

      • We are currently trying out different flavours of samyang. Absolutely loving them.

  • +10

Hopefully Amazon price matches so I don't have to get off the couch

  • Remember to stack with woolies e-gift cards!

  • +9

Make sure to add only half the seasoning. Not that it's too spicy, but sodium content is high in the seasoning. Good instant noodles though.

    • +2

      Agree.
These noodles have high sodium…much higher than recommended daily intake.

    • +6

All the sodium is in the soup though so you can just eat the noodles and throw away the soup and it’s fine.

    • i used to eat 2 packs a day until I had a medical checkup.. ouch

      • hope you are ok. Do you mind sharing what are all the side effects? Other than it's just bad for your health. Just out of curiosity.

Growing up, parents always trying to scare me by saying that if I eat instant noodles everyday, the wax will destroy my gut. I wonder if that is any true at all…

        • +5

My aunt taught me once you boil the noodles to throw the water out and dump the noodles in a fresh pot of water to get rid of a lot of the oil and wax they use to preserve the noodles.

          • @Zippy135: we must have the same aunt…

            • @WT: So you must be cousins.
I also often rinse the noodle with hot water. Taste wise it's a bit less.

            • @WT: 😄

          • @Zippy135: That was the old saying….every instant noodle maker should know about.

You actually need to flush the noodles with fresh water and rinse properly.

        • its mainly the sodium which has had a pretty negative impact on my blood pressure, something that is incredibly difficult to bring back down one it got to a high level. Not that I can blame the entirety of my issues on Shin Ramen lol but it didnt help. I used to buy these by the box at asian grocers haha

      • I recently was on a small boat trip between islands in Indonesia and had noodles in a cup, was rather shocked that in 2 minutes I had consumed 55% of my daily allowance of sodium (according to the table on the cup).

    • Sodium is always high on all instant and canned foods

      • Yup that's correct, that's why I'm giving a heads up to reduce it 😀

  • +2

I usually grab these for $3.50 at my local Asian shop. But 50c is worth stocking up a few packs.

I usually go for 3/4 seasoning. One in a while I accidentally add the whole lot in with a tin of chilli tuna, a bit of coughing but palletable.

    • I also add a little less than the full pack to reduce saltiness.

  • I seem to recall these being quite spicy.
    Significantly spicier than Mi Goreng.

    • +1

Far more spicier than the migorang. Far less than the Samyang.

  • +2

What other instant noodle brands and flavours are recommended? Especially some non-spicy ones.

  • +3

A big bowl of these with two eggs dropped in is my all-time favourite hangover cure

  • +2

    Noodles are made in Korea.
    Noodles are shipped to Australia.
Noodles are purchased here and taken back to Korea because they are actually cheaper to purchase here.

    Username checks out.

  • +6

My Korean partner just about froths at the mouth whenever these are on sale. Will be stocking up with at least a full box.

These are great with a couple of dumplings and an egg dropped into the soup and stirred in just before serving, maybe some spring onion too if you want some greens.

It does sadden me that these are made with palm oil.

    • A raw egg dropped in?

      • +2

it will poach in about a minute. really good way to add some healthy protein

      • Yes.

When the noodles are nearly ready and water is boiling. Break open an egg and add to noodles. Stir as desired and once egg is cooked, 1 minute or so, serve.

        Yum!

      • a raw egg stirred through cooks quickly, maybe 30 seconds even if just finished boiling. It adds egg flavor to every spoonful but no texture.

an egg dropped in and poached for about 2 mins (simmer) will give a runny egg yolk but will give texture but 1 egg wont be enough for every spoon full

  • +5

    Gamsahabnida!!

    • 감사합니다

  • from memory, there are 2 version, made in china and made in korea
i believe the one on woolies is made in korea

not sure if the news below is old or new… can't seem to find the posted year in the post
    https://www.asiaone.com/health/nongshim-ordered-recall-impor…

    • +3

So made in China high chance of food poisoning?

      • It has different power soup flavour.
The noodle color seems a bit different.
Certainly I want the Korean version. :)

  • +1

I remember during uni I couldn't finish one packet by myself. Always thought it a waste but was stuffed. Now I can eat it all and more.

Make it with less water, more concentrated flavour!

    • I suspect they reduced the noodles. I used to break a pack in half for a snack and it was enough. Now its not quite enough and you can see missing bits in the noodle circle where before it was full.

I really dont get it, they are trying to save 2c

      • 2 cents savings a packet = millions and millions of dollars of profit a year.

Do you even belong on Ozbargain of you couldn't work that out?

  • +11

I bought these the last time they were $3 and had one pack (not bad) and the other 4 disappeared. Went to the cupboard to have a pack for lunch the following week and they were all gone. Quizzed the whole family and even sent a picture of what the packet looks like to them but no one would fess up to eating them. It nearly split the household up, I call it noodlegate

  • Time to stock up, sometimes we don't use the spicy pack just use chicken or beef stock.

  • +1

These were $12 for 1 packet at the town near Everest Base Camp in Nepal. Absolute bargain here.

  • I stopped buying Indomie Migoreng (my previous go to noodle) because palm oil. Do these also have palm oil?

    • +2

Yep they do, ingredients are in the description.

  • Thanks OP, going to stock up a few packs. Asian grocery stores here in Perth usually sell around $5. Spudshed is selling at $4.90

  • Which ramen has less sodium Japanese or Korean?

    • +1

The one that doesn't say shio or soy …

  • +1

    Palm oil = bad

  • +1

when you guys are done eating shin ramen try this:
    https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/32167?istC…

  • if you are loaded, try the black label version, taste heaps better imo

  • Anyone else find these noodles really spicy hot? I get halfway through a bowl and my mouth is on fire.

    • +1

Anyone else find these noodles really spicy hot?

      really?

    • -1
    • They're pretty warm, but not as hot as the Samyang Hot Chicken for example.

If you haven't tried it, adding a slice of processed cheese on top is nice and tames it a little.

    • Not at all spicy.. I even drink the soup

    • I don't use all of the flavouring sachet as I find it is too hot if I do. This makes the heat more manageable.

  • Thanks OP….stocked up today.

  • What do people put in their noodles?

    I put fried Spam. Classic.

    • Cheese.

The Singles one/individually wrapped ones that look a little plastic.

      • Wow. That's sound interesting. Will try this week.

    • Little hotdogs like Sheldon?

    • these are what I have put in my noodle:
      eggs,
      rice(more carbs),
      frozen gyoza/dumpling
      extra chilli powder
      spring onion

depending on the flavor, I also added:

      sweet soya sauce
      Corn beef
      fried shallots
      lemon or lime

  • Skip these if you are watching your waistline. @ 514 calories per serve, that's equivalent to 2 X Big Macs.

    • Whoops, works out to be 1 X Big Mac. Surprisingly still a lot of cals though.

    • Ah shit, too late. I guess these will be for my cheat days
