I'm not sure if anyone on Ozbargain would actually be interested in this but it's the cheapest it's ever been. Happy Listening

I miss that show.
I'm fairly new to classical music.
I'm guessing this guy is pretty good?He was one of the greatest conductors of all time :)
Very precise, high quality stuff in general - HvK, Deutsche Gram. and the Berlin Philharmonic…. you'd have to be a fan to do the collection though. Me I'd just pick a few favourites. It is pretty cheap given the sheer quantity though.
Having a look, there is plenty of CDs of his on Apple Music. Not this 78 cd collection though, but I can see this same collection can be found elsewhere if you really want it.
Herbert von Karajan was the principal conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic for 35 years (1954–1989). He was widely considered as one of the greatest conductors of the 20th century, and was often compared to his American contemporary - Leonard Bernstein.
The Berlin Philharmonic is considered as one of the best orchestras in the world (alongside with the Royal Concertgebouw, London Symphony Orchestra, Vienna Philharmonic etc.) and Karajan played a big part in the development of the orchestra. Under his guidance, the orchestra made a vast number of recordings and toured around the world.
Personally I am a huge fan of his recordings, especially his Beethoven, Mahler and Sibelius symphonies. Fun fact - I prefer Karajan's recording of Dvorak's New World Symphony compared to Bernstein's, which I find rather ironic considering their nationalities and the context of the piece.
78 cds!! Geez I'll need 13 x 6 stacker cd player!
Oh yeah
Karajan is one of those love or hate characters. While his command and ability to shape up the orchestra is not something that one can doubt, his interpretations of classical pieces is not academic and a bit too emotional and frivolous at times.
nevertheless, yes probably a good deal. for someone
It was a little too new wave for my taste.
So having an opinion on classical music makes him a snob? Wow tough crowd..
Snobs often look down upon emotion in music, as if they're above it. Some of the greatest music of all time is emotional and not "academic".
@bailbondsh: what I am saying is that Karajan often goes against the idea and design of the composer, giving a "fresh" treatment to the piece. he tends to play things faster, too. so people either love or hate him! haha no one stays impartial and this is great in its own way
me, I caught myself not once hearing a recording on ABC classic radio that sounds all wrong, only to be announced as one directed by von Karajan, so I guess I am in the haters camp.
I am not against emotion, not by a long shot. look at what Gustavo Dudamel does, he leans towards emotional treatment, too, but his interpretations make far more sense haha
Even the way he wrote that sentence could have been sophisticated, but it just sounded cringey and pretentious.
@bailbondsh: You sound cringy and pretentious.
@Aids: good one.
anyway, "it's a good deal. for someone", for me and my naive peasant ears.
Isn’t this on Spotify?
I buy all my music either on CD or Vinyl. I just blew your mind.
How do you play those on an iPhone?
I’ve been curious why anyone would do that in this day and age where music is so accessible online
Better quality.
Damn. If I wasn't trying to get rid of all my stuff to move overseas, i would have purchased this. Great value for a great recording.
You might as well just buy the whole 330 CD/23 DVD/2 Blu-Ray set for only $1292 - you know you'll be kicking yourself later if you dont….
There's 1 in stock but thankfully more on the way
I feel more sophisticated having even clicked on this one.
Love Karajan, but I'm more a fan of his newer stuff.
Omg, just missed this. Although I’m not a big fan of symphonic music (more of a chamber and concerto fan,) this collection is definitely worth buying. Would like to listen to his take on Tchaikovsky 4-6.
"We've got 42 songs on 78 CDs!"
