Yes you can (when no one is watching) and yes I did. Picked up quite a few useful tech there. But since the beginning of this year my local OW has moved the bin inside the warehouse at night.
Although I am quite sure there are laws and T&Cs that forbid bin raiding.
I've got a number of old phones in the past to use as MP3 players.

FWIW Had some funds from shopback burning a hole in my paypal account, so I picked one of these up to use as a wall controller for Home Assistant/Imperihome. Would not want to use it for anything else, but for this task (a glorified light switch) it seems to be working perfectly.
