I am sure the system is fine to DD the final balance - but I've no idea how they justify that their system can't detect when a payment has been made already (mine was made 20+days before the DD took place) and so do the DD anyway - and then charge a fee for this.
When this happened with Citi I did press them to explain, they said it was a system issue and gave some really weird explanation that made no sense to me.
I find it very hard to believe one of the biggest consumer banking groups in the world can't figure this out - it almost has a whim of dodginess to it - as in,"Oops yes you're right we'll refund that fee for you - we're really sorry" when likely 30-40% of folks never notice it.
