All the options, specs and prices on one post, Kudos.

    • I'm putting this here as a PSA.
This deal is great. However, you get what you pay for.

I bought the 1050 and upgrade the hard drive and ram. It had multiple issues that I should have expected given the price.

Battery life is poor and it runs down when it is closed but off charge.
Fairly often opening from sleep it would freeze an dneed a restart.

Asus support is dreadful. I did an EOFY deal and submitted for a cashback in July. Still waiting.
I don't know how other parts of their support but I imagine it would not be terrible in one area and great in the other.

The laptop has an RGB single zone keyboard. The brightness is not adjustable with the Asus software. I had the latest version of armoury crate.its brightest when it cycles through the colours. That's how I had it, but it's annoying.

      Screen was a little dull.

Now, saying all this I know it's cheap. So if you are happy, buy it. If not, save up another 300 or 400 dollars and you might be happier.

      • +1

Sorry to hijack your comment, just wanted to weigh in with my experience so far with the laptop.

The most portable "gaming" laptop you could ever buy will be anything with a TB3 port (x4 over x2 lanes preferably). Ice Lake has an integrated TB3 controller so it should become a lot more common with Intel's 10 series CPUs.

If you want business grade support, buy a ThinkPad. I got through to their over the phone warranty support with zero time on hold. But if you want to do anything GPU heavy then this is a good budget conscious option with better CPU performance due to a higher TDP and beefier cooling than the ThinkPad E series.

I have the same model, only with a GTX 1650. Try updating your BIOS and chipset drivers. Not sure if it'll fix your battery life and sleep issues, but it did significantly improve my CPU performance and it's maximum boost speed. That said, Asus has been quite diligent in updating the drivers available on their website with the newest ones only being a few days old at the time of writing. Although, Asus did also need some friendly encouragement when processing my cashback and complimentary headset.

Maximum brightness isn't really noteworthy and I wouldn't recommend it in direct sunlight. But it is a decent IPS panel.

I/O is pretty spartan, with no TB3 (this is 2nd Ryzen what do you expect) or SD card reader.

The 47wh battery is a little lackluster for the relatively high TDP chips these laptops run. If you unscrewed the HDD caddy on the inside, there looks to be room for a battery twice the size. You might even be able to replace the standard battery with a larger Asus 97wh battery as long as it has similar screw patterns and dimensions (and voltage and pin layouts, which is easier than it would initially seem). From what I can tell it isn't glued in place.

GTX 1650 4GB, in case anyone is wondering. It's a really decent setup.

    • +1

I found the 1650 4GB to be a decent step up from the 1050ti

      I got a msi gl65 i5-9300 /1650 and it's gone well

      • How're you finding the battery life of the GL65 when you're not gaming. Thinking of buying 2 for my kids primary school BYOD, but it has to be able to get through 4 or 5 hours at school. The devices the school is recommending are a complete joke and about 70% of the price.

        • +1

The battery life so far iv found a bit disappointing
, i have only used it for around 3 weeks but mainly using it for light video games and video rending

i have been also rendering on battery too.

But i have been having the laptop go to sleep while on battery, so i haven't really kept track on time.

i might run some battery tests and see what happens

  • +1

Ryzen 7 mobile cpus are pretty poor compared to Intel i7-8/9. However can't complain about the other specs and the price.

    • Yeah, performance is closer to an i5

    • +4

      Hence the budget price.
You'll see that the price significantly increases with the Intel and Nvidia combo.

      • -1

You'll see performance and battery significantly decrease with a Ryzen CPU

        • +2

Battery is better on the Ryzen chips actually

          • -1

@[Deactivated]: unless you compare to intel 10th gen

            • @Phoebus: 10th gen H series chip don't exist yet

          • @[Deactivated]: based on what? AMD fanboy claims?

Even the new Intel surface 3 is better than Ryzen one

            • @Freestyle: Based on notebookcheck when you compare it to the same chassis but with with 9th gen HQ chips.

These are 35w chips vs Intel's 45w so it's not surprising

    • +1

      Thought I'd compare the ASUS FX505DU-AL042T $1356 vs ASUS GL531GT-AL018T $1359.20

Considering they're similar price here's the performance differences, these are real world benchmarks of peoples systems

      CPU Comparison:
      https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/AMD-Ryzen-7-3750H-vs-I…
      i7 9750h is 28% better on average than Ryzen 7 3750H

      GPU Comparison:
      https://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-GTX-1650-vs-Nvi…
      1660ti 6GB is 83% better on average than 1650 4GB

Considering the performance % comparison to value for money ratio of both the CPU and GPU combined, it looks like the FX505du is better value.

  • Oh man, I am really looking forward to buying a gaming laptop within a $1000 budget. Should I get this one or there might be better deal on Black Friday?

    • My main use-case will be to play Destiny 2 or Division 2 while traveling overseas. Will this hold up?

      • Should be, it's a decent spec but if you want to be extra sure you can wait for more comments from other members of OzB or research

      • +2

ASUS FX505DT-AL043T is a great deal and the pick for under $1000

    • +4

      Black Friday!

    • +1

It might be worth waiting until Black Friday. CA does 20% off every once in a while so likely this deal will come around again.

  • +1

I've been using the GL531GT for 4 months it's a great and solid laptop. Love it!
However, this particular (GT) model does not come with the Virtual Keypad like shown in many official photos though.

  • +1

It’s usually $1050 + delivery so about another $50 off. Unfortunately reviews says it suffers from overheating and a pulsing loud fan problem, which I think is a deal breaker. I imagine any remaining stock will be sold even cheaper on the coming Black Friday sale.

    • Are you looking at the reviews for this particular model? The FX505 series are advertised to have "no throttle" on the CPU. There are complaints about the previous models (FX504 series) suffering overheating

      • +1

Are you looking at the reviews for this particular model?

        Yes

    • You’ll be hard pressed to find a gaming laptop that doesn’t have a loud fan, given the low TDP on the CPU and GPU here its probably as good as it gets.

      • True, but you don't want the fan to pulse on and off constantly, which this model does.

  • Avoid the RTX 2060 model (FX505DV-AL014T) - I have one, it hits 100degrees to quickly and the CPU bottlenecks the GPU way too hard.

    • That's a shame. So the CPU overheats, throttles then bottlenecks the GPU?

      • Spot on. I was really hoping it would be able to manage the load but the 3750h just cannot keep up with a GPU like this
I like AMD being the underdog and all but if you're dead set on a RTX2060 laptop you're better off pairing it with an Intel 9300H or 9750H.

    • +2

Get a laptop cooler for it. Might help a little. Cooling the CPU will increase the clocks, reducing the bottleneck a bit.

      • Yeah i got a cooling pad and repasted the CPU & GPU with Grizzly Kryonaut. It does help a little bit. but still an unbalanced machine unfortunately :(

        • +2

Yea. That was always going to happen though when you pair what is essentially a mobile i5 with a 2060.
The 3750H is paired well with the 1650, whilst the 2060 pairs well with a 9750H.

        • Have you undervolted as well?

          • @Mibo: can't be done as far as i can tell the 3750h is locked

        • I use 3 fans for my laptop

          1 cooling pad
1 laptop suction exhaust fan (reduces temp by 10c on max speed)
1 USB powersupply tower cooling fan. PSU doesn't even get warm.

Plan on adding 2 more fans.

Add a 2nd exhaust fan for double suction from a single side exhaust.
Add a flexi pen fan to cool the exhaust fan which gets really hot under load.

I found any USB cooling over they keyboard makes little difference.

          • @imcold: Nice! Links to everything but the cooling pad please?

            • +1

@CVonC: Usb PSU tower fan - Anything will do, just use your imagination. But going to move to something more quiet.
              https://imgur.com/cutAF7T
              https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/222373

Exhaust cooler is the Yuesong V5 which is no longer in production. The V8 version is the current version but is nearly EOL. But, there are plenty of other brands with a similar design.

I'm in a process of adding more fans so I just moved my fans to a 5 port Blitzwolf BW-S7 on my Jackson green powerboard. When laptop goes off all fans shut-off along with monitors. (You don't want to spin the internal fans when the laptop is not on)

  • please compare with wireless1, when they have 15% off usually end up slightly cheaper than 20% off from computer alliance

    • Appears to be still better at CA for these particular models. Link to Wireless1

  • +1

nice need to upgrade the shops laptop

  • I couldn't find these laptops on display anywhere.
The 505DU looks nice but not sure how portable it is.

    • where do you live? both JB and HN have them on displayed - https://www.harveynorman.com.au/computers-tablets/computers/….
You probably won't find all models in one shop but you'll definitely be able to find 1 or 2 Asus ROG and TUF models in each shop.

    • and if you don't need numpad then the GL531 series are a good option in terms of size and portability, it really looks like a 14" laptop when you compare it to older model laptops.

      I have the GL531GT:
      GL531GT: 36.0(W) x 27.5(D) x 2.58 ~ 2.58(H) cm
      505DU : 360.4 x 262.0 x 25.8 ~26.8 mm (WxDxH)
So looks like the 505DU is just about 10-15mm more in depth and height
      weight is similar.

Spend $60 on another 8GB of RAM from your local PC shop and this becomes a great all rounder for gaming and productivity.

  • +1

Aww man I got the ASUS FX505DT-BQ143T earlier in July, just under around ~1k
Looks like for the same price you can now buy the Ryzen 7 + 120Hz screen

    • Does your fan pulse on and off regularly under load?

This would be my pick when it's under $1300: ASUS FX505DU-AL042T

  • Guys, something is wrong, I think it's just 60Hz.

From the product description: Unite the latest AMD Ryzen™ processor and NVIDIA GeForce GTX™ graphics on an up to 120Hz* IPS-level NanoEdge display with the new ASUS TUF Gaming FX505…

    * Only FX505DU-AL042T comes with 120Hz display

The 042T is one of the other listed laptops they have, at the more "normal" price of $1356 after discount.

    • Listing says 120Hz, same with competitors for this model.

    • Yep 60hz

  • The 1660 ti worth more then a 1070, odd.

  • The FX505DT-AL043T and GL531GU-ES046T are the highlights of this deal imo

  • is it 120hz or 60 hz? can someone please clarify?
also, how often does this deal come up? every few months? because I am planning to buy a new laptop around january?

    • I’m pretty sure it’s 120Hz. You can contact them to verify.
I’d say CA does a 20% off every 2-3months. FUTU online is also selling this laptop and they have 20% off much more regularly

    • can confirm fx505dv-al014t is 120hz. not sure about others.

  • +1

I bought one of these when they came out (FX505DU with 1660ti and 16gb single channel ram) for $1499 on ebay sale when my jb hi fi had them for $2200 lol
    Swapped out the x1 16gb 2666mhz ram for x2 8gb 2400mhz ram
    https://www.umart.com.au/Corsair-CMSX16GX4M2A2400C16-16GB--2…
    Ryzen 7 3750h can't use 2666mhz so 2400mhz is fine.
Got between 10-60fps extra in certain games just by going dual channel. At this price with the ram swap and selling the single 16gb stick you have a very good laptop.
If you are however able to get dual channel when you buy then even better!

You'll never use more than 16gb unless you were rendering or doing graphic work. In which case this cpu isn't the way to go. 16gb is really the max it will need as this laptop is intended for value for money gaming. So by selling the single stick and buying dual channel ram it was a cheap upgrade and the preformance improvement was well worth it, in my case.
This video helped in my decision:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FOtmR4opHzU&feature=youtu.be

Safer to buy a dual channel kit that will work together than two seperate ram sticks that may not. Ram in the link worked for my unit.
After the new BIOS and CPU driver update I've noticed it run even snappier and faster in windows 10 and games.
For the price and specs this is a good value for money laptop.

    Hope this helps someone :)

    • where and for how much did you sell for single stick ram?

      • $80 on gumtree

    • I got the same model as you and I swapped the 16gb ram to 2*8gb 2400mhz ram. However the speed is stucked at 1866mhz while charging and 400mhz when it is unplugged. Did you have the same problem?

    • latest finding is the base ram speed is 1866 but when i play games or do something intense it does jump to 2133 or 2400 but it cant stay 2400 constant, it stay 1866 most of the time instead

      • Not sure why, probably check the bios settings. Also I just installed the ram in the link and it worked at 2400mhz right away. What ram did you install?

        • It's sk hynix ddr4 2400
I entered the bio but I don't seem be able to change any setting regards to the ram ):

          • @dkwon10: All I could suggest is buying the ram I posted in the link as this worked for me out of the box. I'm not sure why that's happening for you

  • Anyone check their ram stick so we can order another 8gb one.

    • mine has 1x16gb 2666mhz samsung stick. I swapped it for 2*8gb 2400mhz sticks but after they are installed the speed shown on CPU-Z is 1866mhz. Does anyone know how to solve this problem? many thanks

      • have you tried to enable xmp profile in bios?

        • there is no such option in the bios in this particular laptop… i know it is weird.
The tech guy who sold me the ram was helping me and he couldnt find it either
it is a sk hynix ddr4 2400 stick btw
