Nice price ~ I saw the real thing 2 week ago, and it is much small than I expected.

I get the same reaction sometimes

Not sure why you'd boast about THAT.

Buy a pimple remover cream next time.

          Mutilation isn't a good idea

      • I get the same reaction sometimes

How many have you looked at?

      • +1

I mean, 4 inches is still a very serviceable size, it isn't the biggest, but it's still usable.

I wish everyone was as understanding as you

I highly recommend this product. I use it daily as an alarm clock and for checking the weather. It also has replaced my google mini for voice control of my WIFI plugs. Brightness is adjustable so no it's not too bright at night. Many different clock faces to choose from also. Also allows you to just say "stop" to dismiss the alarm when it goes off. Highly recommended 8/10. Would have been better if you could watch youtube on it.

    • Generally I agree, but the brightness is still a little excessive for me on auto, and it goes ridiculously bright during the day. I do like the physical switch on the back to mute the mic, you never forget the first time it misinterprets something you were saying in it's vicinity…

May I ask which wifi plugs you're using which are compatible?

    • +2

What's the benefit of this over just using your phone for the same tasks?

      • +15

The benefit is that you're not using your phone.

    • +4

Also allows you to just say "stop" to dismiss the alarm when it goes off.

That's probably a good reason for me to not use it as an alarm clock.

    • +2

Why say stop when you can smack the crap out of it ?

  • what does it do apart from show the time?

    • +2

Has Google Assistant, so can allow you to turn on/off smart devices, display weather.
Also able to view Nest Security Camera feeds, which they have as a demo of a Baby Cam as well (if you're a new parent).

    • You can play music the same way you can for google home e.t.c… however I must say, the speaker isn't the best.

  • +2

    It listens to you having…

might as well get the camera too then!

Yeah sure, if you're yelling "Hey Google" during…

I have Amazon Echoes at home, I must make sure to never date anyone called Alexa.

          Did you read your article?

Editor's Note, 8/7/19: Amazon, Apple and Google have each now suspended human review of user audio recordings.

      • “ After listening to several short, private recordings picked up by what were likely unintended triggers, the anonymous contractor came forward with concerns about lack of disclosure.

“There have been countless instances of recordings featuring private discussions between doctors and patients, business deals, seemingly criminal dealings, sexual encounters and so on," the whistleblower told The Guardian. "These recordings are accompanied by user data showing location, contact details and app data.”“

Poor 1 star reviewer on Officeworks has EIGHTEEN wifi networks and can't figure out how to connect this clock to any of them.

    • +22

If you have 18 god damn wifi networks set up I'm surprised you can connect anything at all to any of them, lol.

    • +12

Online store reviews are great, like the guy who reviewed a Samsung Wireless Fast Charger on JB Hifi's site and gave it one star because he was angry that it required a power cable. Apparently it was meant to generate power by itself.

      • By pure percentages, half of all reviews online will be by people with below average IQ.

        • +3

          You mean the median IQ?

      • I read a laptop review from a customer recently who was complaining about how their 8 month old laptop was too slow, when the CPU on the laptop in question was only released one month prior.

      • He gave it two stars.. I had to go and actually find that review :)

  • So is it the same as a Google home/mini? Does it have a speaker to respond, or does things "just happen"?

    • Works the same as the mini. The screen will show a few things (weather, alarms, etc), but can't play video or have things cast to it.

The sound does really come from the back too. The mini sounds like it comes from the 'front'.

      • Can't you can't music to it? Or you mean no video?

    • Yes, with a screen and speaker.

  • Can you set it so these emit no light at all?

    • +4

Yes, but you have to get a special accessory.

The accessory allows you to have a smart clock in another room too!

    • Yes. Using voice prompts: hey Google, turn off the screen.

      • +1

I just say "sleep" and it works.

      • Can you do it using the touch screen? I like the idea of having an information touchscreen around but rarely use voice commands

        • No, the touch screen has a "good night" button in the drawer, but that keeps the screen on and plays "peaceful sounds" which is actually just cricket noises. I would not recommend getting this if you won't be using voice commands, the UI is pretty useless.

  • +3

They've reduced the price on eBay now too (https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Lenovo-Smart-Clock-with-Google-A…), but none of the current offers seem to work with it unfortunately

    Surveillance capitalism.

That's where all the data that is collected about you is used to predict and control what you do with your money and votes while your unaware that you are a victim.

    • Surveillance capitalism capitalism & communism
there there, I fixed that for you
You also can do voice command
HEY XI instead of OK GOOGLE

    • +2

Interesting theory, have you actually looked into how these devices work or does that tin foil hat make it card to connect to the net?

  • +2

If only it had a built in DAB tuner…

    • +1

It can connect to any radio you want via the Tune In radio app

      • Yeah, but I'd rather not use streaming and use up my data and bandwidth, when there is digital broadcast freely available. Much easier to switch between stations too. I have a smart radio (one of the bush ones) and hardly use the internet radio function. Always on DAB

        • +1

Yeah, but I'd rather not use streaming and use up my data and bandwidth,

Are you on a very limited speed/bandwidth connection? I thought just about everyone's home internet is unlimited nowadays. Streaming radio uses very little bandwidth, maybe 128-160kbps. I really wouldn't be worried about a 0.125Mbps audio stream if I had a 50Mbps connection. :)

          • -3

@eug: Hey it's Australian NBN we are talking about…every little bit of bandwidth counts lol and no not unlimited data.

        • Most Tune In streams are only 64-96kbps anyway. At 96kbps, let’s say you listen for 4 hours per day to be extreme - 168MB/day. Not much

  • I've had this for a month and although the screen is good as a clock, it doesn't really do much much other than display fancy clock faces since it can't even play videos. I don't have any security cameras to display feeds. I can't even set the clock face to display certain albums on my Google Photos either.

I would prefer something like the Echo Dot 3rd Gen with LED clock, but I heard Google Assistant is much better than Alexa so this should this is the best smart speaker with small clock with Google Assistant I guess.

    • Probably should have checked it does or doesn't play videos before you bought it perhaps.

  • Looks like they're dropping the price on this to make it a de-facto Google competitor to the Echo Dot with Clock (tm).

  • How does the mic and speaker compare with a Google Home Mini v1?

    • Sorry, I can only compare to the Google Home (i.e. not the mini version). The sound is quite poor on the clock. I use the speaker when cleaning e.t.c…. it's not the best. Opportunity lost, but having said that it does make for a really good clock.

Can it display calendar / appointment info from google calendar on the screen?

  • Cool spy device bro

  • -1

    Got one. Thanks OP.

  • Re-purpose an old smart phone you have lying around by buying a dock or stand for it. With a lot more features/capabilities than this one.

    • +2

I used to do exactly that. Turns out a purpose-built device does the job a lot more elegantly, if what you want is a smart speaker/display for Google Assistant.

Here's what I found with one of the setups I had - a Sony Xperia Z Ultra on a nice tidy stand.

      • The auto brightness on a phone is nowhere as good as on a smart display like this - it doesn't go dark enough in a bedroom.

      • The speaker is absolutely anemic compared to even a Google Home Mini

      • The microphone pickup does not work as well as the microphone array in a Google Home device

      • Interacting with the screen would move the whole dock. I had to open up the dock and glue in two large heavy bolts to weigh it down.

      • Having always-on Google Assistant was very fiddly at the time.

      • I couldn't do an auto-updating slideshow at the time.

Who would have thought that a smart display works better as a smart display than a phone in a dock? ;)

  • Any idea if this makes calls with Telstra like the best mini?

  • JBHiFi and HN sell this for $79.

  • Also in the good guys for $78

Just got it for $74.10 through the good guys after purchasing a $78 gift card through Suncorp rewards. Which is another 5% off.

Good deal for $74.10 pick up.
