Can I ask what seems like a stupid question but does this play FM radio?

    • +2

No. I don't think ANY smart display play FM radio.

    • Not unless you cast it from an app on your phone.

    • It does even better - it will stream any station that is on IheartRadio.
I use it to wake up to 6PR most mornings.

  • +3

You can play online radio .. anything on iheartradio

    • does iheartradio stream live? the reason i ask is because when my alarm goes off, i like to wake up to the radio playing

      • Yep, sure does. All the major metro stations are on there and a bunch of the regional ones as well.

      • +3

Yep, I set mine to play internet radio for the alarm. There is a downside to using this for alarms though if you are used to your old radio alarm.

It seems it has a default alarm length of 10 minutes for all alarms, including internet radio which kind of sucks as I liked my old radio that played for an hour.. Even for regular alarms I'd like them to sound longer than 10 mins as I can be a heavy sleeper.

When I first got it, I couldn't find a way to adjust this. There is a setting for the snooze length but I not sure if it changes the alarm length (and if it's linked I wouldn't want a snooze of 1 hour anyway). Haven't looked into it since so not sure if anything has changed since.

        • that is a bit of a downfall. I'm the same as you, where I enjoy the half hour to an hour of it continuously playing. hrmmm. thanks for that

        • I also find that mildly annoying, but once it cuts out I just say "Hey Google, play 6PR radio" and it takes care of the rest.

What if instead of setting an alarm, you use Google home to set a Routine?

          • @vicomte: Yeah this does work, though won't stop playing which isn't a big deal I guess. Better than 10 mins.

Would be nice if the alarms had the flexibility though.

  • It does…

    From a review

Interestingly, there’s no way to program the Smart Clock’s alarm with music from Spotify, YouTube Music, or another service through the touchscreen, though you can craft a workaround using a Google Assistant routine on your phone. It’s clumsier than it probably should be, though, since waking up to music is something radio clocks have offered for decades. Finally, you can use your voice to set the alarm, including with a radio or playlist, by asking Google Assistant to just wake you up at whatever time you specify. That’s the method I found most useful in my testing.

    • You can set the alarm with spotify music , just telling it to do it

Any idea if this will start cooking my bacon for me?

I like waking up to the smell of bacon. Sue me.

    • +4

Sure. Get a smart switch, electric frypan, add bacon. Set alarm with routine to turn on smart switch, done. :)

      • Don't forget the smart bed which rolls you into the kitchen.

    • +2

Is this the same grill you cooked your foot in?

  • this seems like a waste of moeny

    • +4

especially when most people don't have much moeny…

    • From my research, I feel that its a nice device that is priced reasonably for its features, yet its features are also found in the smart phones or hubs which people already have. I'd love one as it seems cool, but I can't justify the $80 when I use my don't even use the cheapo alarm I've got (instead using my phone).

    • agree…just get like an old phone and you are all set..

  • Does this connect with any camera doorbells as a display?

    • +1

Google Nest Doorbell does support integration to Google Home Assistant Display (eg. this device, google nest / home hub etc)
However, google nest doorbell is not officially selling in Australia yet (only in UK and US I believe)

You may get the Google Nest Doorbell from US websites and ship to here (eg. getting from eBay, Amazon US, B&H etc)

Otherwise, if you simply want a IP Camera that can show as display in Google Assistant
Get a Reolink cam which is one of the cheapest options I know
      https://reolink.com/google-assistant-integration/

      • Google Nest ads in Oz now have "hey Google show me the front door" so I can only assume this is now available here?

The screen on this one does not completely turn off in the dark and is pretty bright for a bedroom without an ambient light. Problem is that they used an IPS screen where the black pixels still emit light.

    • We use the auto-sensor which works pretty well.
It is not completely black - but its still better than our last alarm clock.

    • I don't find it bright at night. There's not a lot of backlight bleed.

Think it's set by default but there's a setting to revert to basic clock face when dimmed so it only displays the time without backgrounds, and less light.

You can also tell it to turn off the display if you want it completely off.

The stupid blue LED on my charging cable is brighter than this clock at night… That reminds me, need to wrap the stupid blue LED on my charging cable.

  • Can you use this to play music through chromecast audio? Thanks!
