  • What's the actual model number?

  • +8

I will try to answer all questions with the FAQ so I don't have to spam comments with answers.

  • What is the price of this as a 'bare bones' (no win7)?

  • trying to order 2 but only takes off 1 x $70

    • +2

      do 2 seperate orders?

      • 50% extra P&H cost? Still comes out better to do 2 orders, but applying code twice for 2 items in 1 order would be ideal and why not ask an active rep?

  • no wireless G/N network ?

And what does the "x 2" mean under storage ? Implies 2 750GB SATA drives.

    • yes it has 2 hard drives

    • Yes it implies 2x(9.5mm) 750GB hard drives (totaling 1.5TB as per the title).

      • +3

        yeah, just saw that (facepalm)

And the "wifi N" (listed separately to 'Networking, but I'm clearly off the pace today). I'll just get back in my box now.

  • -8

    wow, no neg votes

    • +12

      no, u got one :)

      • ha im just surprised usually i see a couple

  • +1

    How much for barebones??

    • want to know too !

      • +1

It's in the faq at the top.

        • +1

I emailed the suggestion of barebones with 1080p! hopefully we can get a good price =D

  • wuah.. tempted.. is this a good overall ?
    second gen i5 ?
good vid card ? good for image editing ?

  • Rather than barebones, can you go the otherway and bundle in Office 2010 Business (ie. with Outlook)?

  • Hey QQQ,

Any chance you can get a 17" with a 1080p display for a reasonable price?

It's an option on the Asus N73SV.

  • For the specs and discount seems very hot to me +'ed

  • COTD .. any deal for the HP DV4-3030TX ? Planning to grab a lightweight laptop for multimedia work.
The Asus is too heavy for me

    tx

    • asus u36

      • Yeah saw the U series.
but it does not come with i7 as option + no cotd price :)

  • wow this is mental- compared to dell xps 15, comparative price. bigger but higher spec'd in almost all areas.

  • +2

    +1 for OZB code :)

  • Is this much better than the xps 15???

    • For personal use, I would go for Asus.
Being a reseller and now a user of Asus laptop, Asus Australia service dept is very good.

      • I think Dell aim XPS for consumer level now, on level below their Latitude range maybe similar to the old Inspiron.
    • for the $800-900 spec one that was on ozbargs a week ago. it is better in almost every way.

  • What do you all think about the Toshiba Satellite NVIDIA 3D Notebook? Is it worth it?

COTD: Any discounts for the Toshiba?

    • Only neg I can think of about Toshiba that they use to have the warranty that you would need to take it to a warranty repair place and they send it away and you are without a machine, at least with the ASUS they pickup and return which if you are like most people busy at work the last thing you want to do is have to take time out of work to go hunt down a service center. Unsure if Toshiba have changed this practice, as for the machine build and quality I think they are very good.

      • Toshiba is pickup&return.

        • +1

Oh well thats great to hear, glad they changed it…as i mentioned it was like that so its good to hear they changed it, thanks for that.

  • QQQ,

12 month global pick up and return warranty from Asus Australia

Asus' normal Australian warranty is 2 years for laptops. Is this a misprint on your site, or is there a reason you're only offering 12 months?

    • +2

alot of the asus notebooks are now only 1 year, not 2.

      • It's still 2 years on the NZ site:
        http://www.asus.co.nz/Notebooks/Versatile_Performance/X73SV/…

We normally share the same warranty period.

        • Ive bought asus laptops for the past 6 years. they used to be standard 24 month warranties, they have definitely had a shift to 12 month warranties in the last 2 years. nothing strange about this being only 12 month at all.

    • Agree with DMCHART, ASUS Australia has changed alot of their laptops over to 1 year instead of 2. Used to be a big selling point having that extra year. That being said, ASUS laptops are quality, and this is a top notch deal!!

  • Superb price, reasonable screen res too - 1600x900
the GT540M graphics flies and can do 3D if your TV supports it!

  • Networking: Integrated built-in Bluetooth V2.1+EDR (Optional)

So is it included or not?

  • So is this 1080p display?

    • Display: 17.3” 16:9 HD+ (1600 x 900) LED backlight

      • Mr wrestler my knowledge of display resolution is not so great. Does it mean 1080p?

        • +2

          1080p = 1920x1080 = "Full HD"

          This display is 1600x900.

        • +7

Sorry dude, but its hilarious that you care about 1080p when you don't even know what it means.

I could put ten 17 inch laptops in front of you with only 1 of them having 1080p, and I'd be willing to bet you couldn't spot which one it was.

  • +1

QQ please confirm bluetooth is there or not, and how much without OS. Thanks

    • Looks like they've removed any mention of blutooth.

      • Just got off the phone, have no idea why they mentioned it all if its optional. Its removed now.

        • Probably since Asus use one product page for several spec variations and whoever copied the specs didn't check for the particular model you're selling.

        • +4

The main picture still has the word bluetooth and the bluetooth logo on it, If there is no Bluetooth that needs updating too.

        • I bought this laptop after being impressed with its specifications and now after reading postings here it seems that the specifications has been altered on COTD website regarding the availability of bluetooth.

To avoid any misunderstanding and misrepresentation of the product COTD is offering and you please confirm the specs once and for all. I do not think it would be good for consumer to buy and then realise what was sold was not what it was said when advertised for sale. Please clarify this ASAP

        • I also bought this thinking it had Bluetooth, pretty disappointing to have the specs change after you buy. With it on "almost gone" it's designed so that you don't have time to double check the specs so we should be able to rely on them being correct or at least the pic which is what I was counting on

        • Please made ur complains to COTD. COTD needs to acknowledge they have revise the specs and should have made every attempt to contact existing buyers prior to the revision to advice them of the changes and provide a reasonable resolution/compensation or a full refund if customers are not happy with the resolution/compensation provided by COTD. This could potentially amount to false advertisment from COTD and potentially plenty of complains to consumer affairs!

  • Good deal!

  • Does it have USB3?

  • Tempted, but just missing a few things I would prefer.
USB3, i7 processor and the option of just the one included HDD as the first thing I would do to one of these would be to tear the HDD out of one bay and whack in an SSD.

  • +2

sad.. i dont want to use one of the usb just for bluetooth dongle. no deal for me

  • Does seem like a decent deal - from what I can figure out the NZ versions have bluetooth integrated not via dongle so this may have it…

  • lol..thats 1 way of getting rid of that internet security software nobody wanted from the mystery box

  • I'm assuming this has 64bit os? also, are the graphics designated or shared? Please advise, asap!!

    • Discrete graphics by the look of things… 1gb

      • i need this for hardcore photo and video editing on the move and a budget. i think ill be happy. thank you.

        • I wouldn't recommend this for photo editing. The screen is decidedly average with poor contrast and poor off-axis viewing.

Check out the review of the 17.3" K73SV (which IIRC uses the same screen).
          http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Asus-K73SV-TY032V-Notebo…

The laptop is aimed at business graphics and light gaming.

You'd want a laptop with an IPS display for "hardcore photo and video editing".

      • Given the Processor has the Intel 3000 graphics built into it, I am wondering if the lack of mentioning of it is just an omission or whether they have actually gone out of their way to disable it?
Seems a strange thing to do if that's the case as it's a built in feature of both the CPU and the Chipset and can only help to improve battery life by keeping it available…?

        • The NVIDA GeForce GT 540M supports switching between the internal Intel 3000 graphics and the discrete GT 540, called "Nvidia Optimus".

However this has to be enabled by the manufacturer.

I'm not sure if that's enabled on this model or not.

  • +1

Here's some small suggestions that would seriously tempt me:

    a) SSD even if it's only 30GB (don't mind sacrificing one of the 750GB drives)
    b) No OS
    c) Maybe a 1080p display (though this isn't a big deal for me)
    d) Maybe an i7 or slightly higher graphics card? (again not really a deal breaker)
    e) Same or better price than this :D

If you could get something like this I will personally kiss every dollar before sending it to you ;)

Edit: Also would taking out the free CA security lower the price at all?

    • Taking out the security software probably increases the price. They've got a lot to get rid of.

  • I just got one with 2 extra years warranty (can be added in checkout). Should be good for an older client (don't want a high res screen).

    • So what that an extra two years for $60, or a total 2 years for $60?

Looks like the sale's over anyway.

      • Extra - total 3 years. They also had a 1 year one (total 2 years).

  • Yep deal is over now (ie ended at 12pm as does everything on COTD).

Even though it's now moot (you either bought one or you didn't) there is still some confusion over the actual specs:

QQQ, can you confirm the following:
    - Bluetooth exists or not.
    - Has Nvidia Optimus technology or not ( Asus don't seem to advertise this on a lot of their models so it may in fact have it )
    - Expected Battery life

  • I bought the laptop on the day off COTD and didn't find out the coupon code until after. Then read this site and saw that you could email COTD with your order number and still get the $70 off, havn't replied. Also one big aspect i would like to know is the battery life because my laptop at the moment can last for about 1hr 30mins 2hrs at the most and would like a laptop that actually lasts longer!!

    • I am getting conflicting statements from COTD. The FAQ in here states that the vouchers can be applied by email if missed. They also claim that they have no REP in OzBargain!! Who is [email protected] then?? See thread below.

      from Jaime [email protected]

      Thanks for your email.
We don't have a rep with OzBargain, or have anything to do with this establishment.
We cant add a voucher once payment has been made.
      Kind regards,

      Jaime
      Customer Service Crew

      from ME:
I understand that the payment has been done and hence would like a store credit. One of your representatives ([email protected]) mentioned on OzBargain website that a store credit can be honored even after payment. See the FAQ section in the link below.

      http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/49178

      • Just got a reply from COTD. The admin person made a mistake and apologised.

  • Is there some delay shipping these? I can't remember if they were a 'shipped after xxx date' item.

    • No there was no delayed Delivery specified on them, this is just the normal COTD horrible shipping times.
I actually have an email that claims mine has been shipped with an Auspost Tracking number and everything, but as per usual for these guys the parcel has been sitting at a distribution centre / warehouse for a couple of days now and has not actually shipped at all.
This happens every time I have ordered from them and I never buy something from them if I badly require it within 2 weeks of buying it as I am so used to this happening.
Fishpond is the only one I have struck who has worse local delivery times, although Shopping Square is dragging the chain a bit currently on my Galaxy SII at the moment as well.

      • Very poor practise to charge the credit card weeks before having shipped the item. Not the first time they've forgotten to ship an order of mine.

      • still havn't gotten my Laptop bought it on Catch of the day on 21/7/11 today is the 8/3/11

        • Picked mine up today ( missed the delivery yesterday) so can't be too far away.

        • Welcome to Catch of the Waiting Time

  • FINALLY DISPATCHED 7.00 TODAY SO HOPEFULLY GET IT TOMORROW!!!

  • GOT THE LAPTOP YESTERDAY WORTH THE WAIT!!! GREAT BUY!!

  • Got it. 19 days from order. They put CA Internet Security Suite 2010 in too (maybe because it's so late) thinking that's a bonus! No extended warranty, but that might have been posted separately.

    • Actually CA Internet Security Suite 2010 is included with all laptop purchases from COTD on that day =D

  • I ordered this, then waited 2 weeks for dispatch, then shortly after that I got an email saying it was 'returned to us by Australia Post due to it arriving at their sorting facility damaged'. :(

The refund arrived immediately, but I'm bummed because I really liked the spec and price of this laptop AND I waited about 3 weeks to NOT get it :(

    oh well

    • I saw some similar ones on Graysonline starting at about $550. They were the previous model with a slightly slower cpu, but essentially the same thing. It is a very nice laptop.
