I got one of these previously. Works well when standing close by but coverage is poorer than my 8 year old router. Regret going with the UK variant.
Have you tried flashing different firmware? Might be a software limitation
From memory when I looked into this it wasn't an option but that was a while ago.
@trowlz: https://github.com/francoism90/asus-router
I've got an Optus DSL-5400 which is the version of this device sold as the Optus Gaming Router before COVID took the model out of production. While not TX/RX capped has optus specific firmware codes baked into the nvram locking down Adaptive QOS, Trend Micro AI Protection and a few other features.
Using this script I was able to change those to the codes to the RT-AX82U and using the startup script ensure it's changed over on each boot. It does allow changing of the wifi country of origin and TX limits, so possibly good for a test, as you can just return it to Amazon during the window if it really doesn't work.
People on a number of forums have confirmed that they have been able to modify and fix the TX limits, but YMMV.
@Elusivity: This works for me also, I've got an Asus GT-AX6000 from Amazon Germany.
No issues whatsoever with power output, I mean it's a little tricky for me to notice because I live in a 3x2 triplex, not a 5x2 house with a big patio out the back.
I've tweaked my WiFi settings as per this script anyway, and I'm really happy with the performance.
I second the comment on recommending https://github.com/francoism90/asus-router
I've tested Tx power/regional channel scripts on an EU region locked ASUS RT-AX88U and managed to get the Tx power settings and channels configured to AU region. However, firmware updates would cause the scripts to not launch on reboot and therefore some manual intervention was sometimes required.
Interesting. I have this model and I haven't had any issues. No dropouts, and I've never had issues with range. I can even get a signal in driveway.
Ooh thanks should be added to the description
do other stores price match Amazon now?
usually the requirements were that store would only price match brick & motar stores with shelved stockThey wont price match a UK site.
Any alternative mesh wifi to recommend since my orbi rbs50 suddenly wouldn’t sync with the base anymore.
do the bands match AU?
According to above, lower transmission power limits rather than different bands. Had it confused.
Ah that's no good
You buy Asus more for the software, their software and QoS is insanely easy to use.
Personally waiting on a sale of this: https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B0D9GKKXVW
Need the 10gbit ports + the 2.5gbps for everything else is cool to have
Same, this looks like the only option for those of us that want a really good AU Router, but for me, price is still a lot more than I want to pay. Lower end models don't suit what I want to do as I want VPN Fusion and ability to be able to use Merlin Firmware. I want a minimum of two 2.5Gbps ports as well (1 x 2.5G WAN & 1 x 2.5G LAN).
There's also the Asus RT-BE86U, but the hardware specs aren't quite as good as the RT-BE88U (has less LAN ports and only 1GB RAM compared to 2GB for the BE88U), and to top it off, the price is pretty similar to the RT-BE88U, so no point in buying that unless the pricing was significantly cheaper.
Not sure what Asus is doing with the pricing of their current models. They really don't have anything affordable for what I am after. Nothing like the old RT-AC86U as far as price and features go. I'd be happy to pay $350 or so for the RT-BE86U, but not current pricing. The RT-BE88U, I'd be OK with $450 or so, but again, both overpriced IMO and not affordable for me. $350 is closer to my max budget, but might stretch out to $450.
Other options depending on the pricing if going with an older AX router is the GT-AX6000 as it has two 2.5Gbps (WAN and LAN ports). I'd get this if it went under $300 AUD, but haven't seen that happen. The RT-AX86U Pro isn't really an option as it doesn't have two 2.5Gbps ports.
Hmm I see there is now an Asus RT-BE92U listed on the AU Asus website (I haven't checked the Asus AU website since BF/CM) that has a single 10Gbps WAN and 2.5Gbps LAN ports, but it has an older CPU 2.0Ghz compared to the 2.6Ghz of the RT-BE86U. I wonder what the pricing of this will be? Only thing is, it doesn't have Asuswrt-Merlin support. I did a quick search and saw at SNB forums that the BE92U is a bit buggy, so that is another option off the table :(.
I really want to move on from the AC68U. It's been great, but I've wanted to move on since the middle of last year, and now that support has ended for it, definitely want to move on. Maybe I need to look at a second hand RT-AX86U Pro or even an RT-AC86U as a temporary stop gap if I can find one cheap enough.
As for the lower end new models, not sure if there is anything that supports VPN Fusion, Merlin and has at least 2.5G ports for WAN & LAN? I am guessing the RT-BE86U is the cheapest currently that fits those requirements?
Is this good? I bought one for the wifi recently, i have 800mb to the router but once wifi kicks in 300mb… i have NETGEAR - RAX50 WIFI 6 ROUTER NIGHTHAWK
Probably a plea for help, but any advice appreciated
Throughput seems pretty good but I don't have a side by side with anything. The feature set for the price is hard to beat.
WiFi wise it's not great - only BE5600 or something. It's more good as a wired switch, like 10 ports on it or something.
If you want good WiFi, there's been deals on the BE9300 tp-link routers recently
What you have is AX5400 too, so the above would be similar but BE9300 would be a jump if you also upgrade to a BE200 wifi card
Thank you!
@moj3: Actually had another look - that one I linked is dual band so with newer wifi cards theoretical maximum is just over 5Gbps still, similar to BE9300.
Most wifi cards don’t use triband - only a single band so it’s the maximum of that band. Means you can have more people on it and setup mesh with the higher band, but not a difference in single end user speeds.
Realistically this would be like 1Gbps unless you’re right next to the router btw, not sure how they even come up with the theoretical they’re no where near real world.
Edit: looked up some benchmarks, both are ~800Mbps at distance and around 1600 next to the router. Newer cards in the future may use multiple bands at once but not many exist yet
Seems like if its Asus router everyone is scared of EU model and yet Mercusys/Tplink selling EU firmware/model officially in Australia is not really frowned upon.
Although to be fair i think it could be that Asus EU transmit power could even be lower than tp link EU transmit power which could be the reason why its more obvious maybe
There have been news saying the tx power can be changed by firmware refresh or other witchcraft.
my 2 cents: not worth the hassle even it's possible, just get local stock when they are on sale.
Here is the aussie version MODEM ROUTER at pccg atm, for $359 if interested.
https://www.pccasegear.com/products/60312/asus-dsl-ax82u-ax5…I picked up the Asus AX5400 for $140 a years back. Worth the trade off then, get 2 for less than 1 locally.
Yeah PCCG has local stock of the DSL-AX82U VDSL2 modem/router all-in-one for FTTN and FTTB.
Officeworks has local stock of the RT-AX82U V2 router for $397. Get the RT-AX82U for FTTC, FTTP, HFC and Fixed Wireless.
Anyone know what the New Zealand routers are like compared to AU models? Do they use the same channels and power levels (I'm curious if they do, but guessing they might be different)? I can't remember, but New Zealand use the same power plug, don't they, so maybe they'd be very similar? It seems that the pricing is a little bit better if buying from NZ for the same models.
NZ I think same. EU different.
Could be wrong
We have the same electricity standard for power points
Thanks for confirming that the electricity standard is the same. I was about 95% sure, but not 100%. Hadn't had time to check yet.
If anyone knows about the wifi channels and power transmission levels between AU and NZ, please do chime in.
I can still wait and hold a bit longer on the RT-AC68U if I have to. I only asked as I'd been looking on Ebay and saw the NZ version of the GT-AX6000 is a better price than in AU and have been thinking of getting that rather than wait for the price of the RT-BE88U or RT-BE86U to come down to something more affordable for me.
I would have grabbed an RT-AX88U Pro during the end of year sales for $299, but I definitely wanted a Router that has a 2.5Gbps LAN & WAN port.
As I mentioned, the RT-BE92U seems interesting as I think it will be a little cheaper than the RT-BE86U and is very similar spec wise, but it's only just been released and might be a bit buggy to start with. Also, I am not sure if Asuswrt-Merlin will support it, so it's a gamble on that front to for me. According to this person's post at SNB forums, it's not too promising so far https://www.snbforums.com/threads/new-models-to-be-introduce…
Here's the post for the latest firmware if anyone is considering this model : https://www.snbforums.com/threads/rt-be92u-firmware-3-0-0-6-…I did reply to your post above. Is there anything you are after specifically apart from the 10Gbps ports? Do you need both of them, or just a single WAN 10Gbps port? I really love the connectivity of the RT-BE88U, seems like a monster. 2.6Ghz CPU, 2GB RAM, plus 10 ports.
I take it with the 10Gbps ports (I don't know anything about SFP+), can you just buy one of those 10G SFP+ modules (or whatever they're called) to plug your ethernet cable into that and then use that port as a WAN port, then the other 10G port as a LAN port? What is the actual advantage of SFP+ compared to a regular Ethernet port? Like, what would be the reason they added that instead of just a 10G WAN/LAN ethernet port?https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_WLAN_channels
They used the same channels as us historically, not sure about Wifi 7.
Having so many ports directly on the router (including 10Gbps) was a plus for me, I'm aware there's switches that can do it for ~$299 (maybe with a few less ports, but full 10Gbps even). The router is quite niche so I'm hoping it'll drop to a decent price.
@Dyl: Any particular price point you're looking at? I've started using CamelCamelCamel for price drop alerts from Amazon AU that another member here at OzB got me onto. Do you use that yourself? If you ever see if for a good price elsewhere, please PM me and I will try and do the same for you (not sure how thoroughly you keep watch of pricing?).
@Ice009: No particular pricepoint, just want something that's a decent deal
I've got a few camelcamelcamel alerts set up
@Dyl: Cool. What other models are you looking at?
Also, thanks for link to the Wikipedia WLAN channel list. Seems NZ have the same channels as AU.
I'm tempted to get the NZ GT-AX6000 if I can get a voucher to use on Ebay, but I just don't like the size and look of the router aesthetically.
Obligatory: UK routers have lower transmission power limits.
