  • Anyone know if holding a DJ Amex is included as part of the 18 months exclusion?

    • I got an DJ Amex during my AMEX Platinum Edge exclusion and got the points

      • Oh wow, how.. i thought all amex card.. the one im still holding is the free qantas discovery and confirmed not eligible by their agent chat

        • +2

Nope DJ Amex has a different exclusion on it's own. It says it on the T&C. There's was a generous sign-on bonus recently with the DJ Amex.

      • I'm asking if you've been sitting out the Amex exclusion period for 12 months and then get a DJ Amex. Do you have to sit out of signon bonus for 18 months again or only 6 months?

        • It should be 6 technically. I would ask their support though. It says issued by AMEX for 18 month exclusion.

    • It's not counted.

      • Meaning the counter doesn't reset?

  • +1

Dammit signed the wife up for the 100k last month. Oh well maybe we get lucky and get a random referral from Ozb to make it up XD

  • If I have an Amex Explorer and had an ANZ one does it exclude me?

Is there an easy way to know that kind of thing without going through all the process?

    • +1

If you have an Amex you’re already exclude from sign-on bonus for 18 months.

      • Oh interesting I didn't know that, I've become an Amex member 22 months ago so potentially I could get it.

        • +5

No, you need to ensure you don't have any active AmEx cards for 18 months straight before you can apply for a new one to get a sign on bonus. If you currently have any AmEx cards and would like to qualify for this type of bonus you would need to cancel all your current AmEx cards immediately and wait for 18 months

          • @JacobHarvey: Ah right, nevermind then…

            Thanks for the heads-up

          • +1

@JacobHarvey: Not entirely true. The two Amex cards which are considered completely separate (to my current knowledge) are:

            1. DJ Amex. Refer to https://www.pointhacks.com.au/american-express-points-offer-…. Although the post is from last year, to my knowledge this hasn't changed. Others can confirm their experience on this.

            2. Westpac Altitude Mastercard/Amex bundle. Refer to comments section at https://www.pointhacks.com.au/credit-cards/westpac-altitude-… - they have re-confirmed earlier this week this info is still current.

So if you hold either of these 2 types of cards (or have done so for the past 18 months), you can still qualify for any sign-up bonuses from either of the Amex Velocity / Qantas series.

But yes, the Explorer or the ANZ would count as an existing Amex card and currently holding them would exclude one from the current offer.

            • @Padmanwong: Yes you are correct, I can personally confirm that those 2 cards are in their own separate special categories. You can also obviously get the bonuses those two cards while holding other 'standard' AMEX's as well

  • Does anyone know how to generate referral link for this card if holding another Amex card? :)

    • I wouldn't think they'd let you do that. It seems like only same card referrals. Imagine how much ozbargaining woudl be going on if we had this qantas card and got 40k qantas points every tiem somebody signed up for a free platinum edge card…

      • Yes you can. I have Amex Platinum and the referree can apply for any of the Amex cards. For Amex Qantas range you can only refer people for another Amex Qantas range card (Ultimate, Gold, etc)

  • +1

How do the referrals work? Which one of the 13 do I choose?

Never mind, I am dumb, you select the card this deal is for.

  • Waiting for a decent deal on Explorer… been a while…

    • +1

With the devaluation to Amex Rewards conversion and Amex Explorer signup bonus likely to remain at 100k MR = 50k Airline miles, I would jump on a deal like that and get the signup bonus first, getting 100-120k Qantas/Velocity points. Then moving on, you can always choose to call Amex and changeover to Explorer Membership Rewards.

      • Yeah there’s no value with Amex Rewards anymore as point become half when transferred to Airline FF. Back in the days you could credit points to Marriott travel package which have now paid off big time.

        • Yep mate - those for the golden days….I used to ship all my points to Marriott…

          • @maverick1: Did you credit them to Alaska as you
can now book First Class around S.E.A for 35k. Good time to try out A380 suites.

      • @lilkid28, Re:"call Amex and changeover to Explorer Membership Rewards".
Is that all that is required, or would you have to cancel the 'Amex Qantas Ultimate' Card and apply for the 'Amex Explorer' Card?

        • I think it's a case of YMMV. I have changed from David Jones MR to Platinum Edge Ascent MR back in 2017. Not sure if can change from Amex Qantas to Amex Explorer. Can try a few times of HUCA, perhaps one of the Customer Rep can do it.

        • Usually close and reopen right one

  • Any decent Velocity bonuses lately?

  • +3

Oh FFS. I got approved yesterday for the 100k one!!!

    • Same! Oh well, 100K for $3K spend isn't too bad.

  • Anybody had any luck booking flights and refunding the 450 back onto the card as a statement credit?

    • I've used it a year ago. All you do is go into Qantas website, look for your flights as normal. Then just go into the Amex portal and look up the same flights and checkout. Your 450 discount will be applied.

      • does the credit roll over?

      • +1

I think you're misunderstanding what is proposed, which is booking a flight cancelling it then getting it back as a statement credit.

        https://travel.americanexpress.com.au/service/static_page.cf…

There will be no refund of Travel Credit or Membership Rewards points if used as form of payment.

    • +1

Travel credit can only be used on qantas flights through the amex online travel agent. All credit must be used in 1 booking no splitting or refunds for unused credit. If spending >$450 you will pay remainder with alternate payment method. Cannot stack with qantas gift vouchers. If booking is cancelled travel credit will not be refunded. Credit does not rollover and expires 1 year from card activation- card anniversary

I found it tough to utilise the credit and booked a flight for the sake of it. Have now cancelled the card for too many conditions for the credit.

      • found the same…also the prices via AMEX seem to be inflated, or is that just me.
not planning to do the amex thing anymore

  • +1

Any idea whether the travel credit can be spent on connecting flights with QF flight numbers but operated by a partner (emirates, cathay pacific, etc.)?

    • Hey yes I used my credit last year for an Emirates operated flights but running under Qantas codeshare (QFxxxx) and booked just fine

    • You must also book with Amex Travels.

  • Would be very happy to help anyone to use the $450 qantas voucher if I can get a referral!

  • With the 4.5k spend in 3 months for the 120k FF points, does anyone know if depositing money into online wagering accounts such as Tab, SportsBet ect count towards the spend? And on that topic do you gain FF points with each $ deposited?

    • No. Best way I found is to buy Wish e gift cards for 5% off and use it later if you cant find anything else to spend on.

      • Is there anywhere where they list what doesn't count towards the minimum spend?

    • +1

expedia book fully refundable accommodation for the holiday you're thinking of taking in a year.

  • If you use a referral does the referer still get 60k points with this 120k offer?

    • Referral offer is 40,000 points as far as I am aware.

  • Anyone know how strict the rules are when it comes to using that $450 travel credit on the AMEX Travel Portal? i.e. is any flight booking on that portal acceptable? If not, what is considered an "eligible" flight?

    • See my comment above

      • Must've missed your comment as I skimmed the page.
Thanks for the heads up. Looks like the conditions under "eligible flights" is a turn off for me.
        Cheers!

    • Looks like the QF flights are always more expensive than other decent alternatives…

  • +1

Even though this is the highest signup ever with the 120000 points the deal hasn't been upvoted that much. Maybe almost everyone on this site already has an AmEx of some sort

    • That and the $450 annual fee.

    • Maybe the $4500 spend in 3 months. Does anyone know the limits on purchases of Woolies Gift Cards through Cashrewards? Woolies eGift Card have no expiry date.

      • I'm not aware of any limit. I have purchased more than $20K in a year.

  • Hi applied and got the card approved today. I also have an DJ Amex that I have for years now

    • How do they notify you of approval? I got conditional approval straight away, uploaded payslips, but haven't received any email or text at all.

      • They called me next day, spend 5 minutes on phone an approved.
No idea why it was so quick, but during that call, the lated asked me to wait and I get a SMS saying approved.

        • Cool, Have to give them a call on monday. I don't even have a reference number.

          • @[Deactivated]: You should have received and email with the reference number. Maybe reapply again and see if that works. It was quick for me.

            • @mr chow: Did this and it worked, thanks!

  • Does the 18 month period of not holding the card start from when you cancelled the card?

    • +1

      yes.

      • How easy it to check when you cancelled your last AMEX card? Can it be done via live chat?

        • i found out my eligibility thru live chat

  • Can the $450 Qantas Travel Credit be spent on accommodation?

You may only use the $450 Qantas Travel Credit for one travel booking for eligible Qantas flight(s) each anniversary year online at americanexpress.com.au/travel. Eligible Qantas Flights are flights with a QF flight number.

  • +2

Does having a supplementary card count as having an active AMEX for bonus points?

    • Edit: applied and approved, consultant on the phone confirmed additional cardholders are eligible for the bonus points provided they meet the other conditions

  • Searched around a bit, looks like the price of some eligible flights (e.g. QF through AMEX portal) in some instances is more expensive than just going through the Qantas website. This is making me a bit uneasy to apply. Anyone noticed similar?

(Disclaimer: Looked only at return flights to Perth in June)

  • I'm applying for this card today, can I confirm whether I should be using a referral link or not?

    • dont think it makes a difference.

    • No difference for you and it's 40k points for someone else so why not use one?

      • excellent point - thanks! Will use a random referral.

  • Applied last night, and got approved today. They called to confirm some details, and that was it.

  • Whoa can we get referral bonus for signing, AND then the 120k?

    • no.

  • +1

Offer extended to 18 November 2019

  • +1

Just want to check, the referral links are now only offering 65,000 points for $3k spend in three months instead of the 120,000 points for $4.5k spend in three months now.

Is this new? If so, there's no real point signing up under referrals anymore (unless you're not confident of spending the $4.5k in three months)?

    • it's tru, just checked with CS before i share my link to my mrs.

    • Yep I was going to refer a mate, not dropped to 65k despite people signing up still getting 120k without referal. Lame.

  • Was also going to apply via referral but the link now says 65 K bonus only. Don't bother with referral link.

But the main page still says 120K to apply until Nov 18th!
So this deal is still active! I literally applied today, called them up to see whether I needed to give more documents and they approved me right away. What service.
