Worked for me, only started using plex a week ago (why have I been using Kodi!?!). Was going use the free trial when I go away in a few weeks, but this is better.

    • +1

Adding your media library as windows files shares in Kodi is better because the client device decides the content whereas Plex uses server resources to transcode it into a format that it can handle for some devices

  • +1

    worked, Ty op

I wish I could pay using my Google Play Credit, which I can but unable to apply this code (also realised paying through the App/Google Play store is $199)

    • Yeah that price is crazy

      • That's because Google takes 30%

  • I've paid for plex pass before, however haven't had it for a while. Code worked for me

  • +1

    Thanks OP. Worked for me!

For those looking for alternatives, and I know this isn't a parity featured item => https://jellyfin.github.io/

    • +2

Thnaks for suggesting the alternative Turtles,…. it is a pity that jellyfin isn't more wildly supported as I use the PS4 and Xbox and jellyfin isn't available as an app or supported unless i'm missing something ? where Plex seems to be on everything..

    • +3

The hope is that jellyfin gets better so we aren't stuck with plex/emby and their poor direction.

    • +1

thanks for the option. Trying Emby atm because it allows me to play via VLC instead if transcoding is required for some of the older codecs/containers.

Having a Synology DS218J transcoding is not the NAS' strong points.

      • Thats a very weird solution to a problem.

With Plex you simply use the appropriate player and you'll never have to transcode.

        • +1

Plex Player on Nvidia Shield defaults to Exoplayer2. It tries to transcode if the container is outside it's small window of direct play options, as mentioned my NAS does not have the processing power to do this.

After attempting DLNA Plex using VLC, I found that Emby has this option inbuilt if you wish to use external players if transcoding is required with it's internal player.

Might be an Android TV and my Synology NAS issue that is particular to me. The Exoplayer2 issue with Android TV/Nvidia Shield is widely discussed on Plex forums.

          • @Rikkh81: OpenPHT/Plex Media Player on Windows, the raspberry pi builds, plex for kodi can play 100% of files.

There's also plenty more players these days that can also direct play a lot of files.

Player player on Nvidia shield sounds like a specific issue, most people seem to say that Nvidia should plays anything.

            • @samfisher5986: It usually can play anything. It is a Plex/Android TV player issue that I wasn't aware of that it directs to use Exoplayer2.

Agree with you on better options out there, however have had 0 issues since this work-a-round. Will continue to monitor as I still have 10 months or so on plex pass and will monitor every update they provide.

  • Thanks OP

    Thanks. Worked for me

  • +1

Semi related but some people may find it useful. Filebot is a pretty good program for renaming tv shows and movies.

  • +1

    Thank you OP. Bought it.

  • I use plex to chromecast movies, seems strange to pay for it, what do you get for your money?

    • Multiple users and the ability to sync to my phone is why I pay for it.

  • +1

Thanks OP worked for me. Never have sub before.

  • +1

I tried this last time I do like the idea but they removed Online servers

so I seem to need to keep a computer on at all times to access my files which is annoying

I just want something to arrange all my photos and store them online and files too

    • They only removed the official plex cloud feature, there are a lot of people who run plex in the cloud.

      • oh thanks daddy

I wish i can try i will try to buy an online server and use a system shock linker

  • +4

I don't use Plex, still bought! Thanks.

    • LOL give to daddy then

i think normally its only 20 or 25% off

      • I do have multiple PC, few laptops, few tablets and few phones and more than 50 TB of media files so might use in the future.

        • -1

nice one just write it down somewhere haha so you remember you have it haha

          • +1

@AussieMark: KEEP does that for me on multiple platforms!

      • why do you keep referring to yourself as 'daddy'?

  • +1

Does anyone know of an app that can track all my App subscriptions or purchases?

I need a way to remember all my different apps and serials when I upgrade computers etc

    • +1

me2, I even don't remember what I bought and when!

    • +3

I suggest you sign up for bitwarden.
Password manager as well. Comes in handy

    • You could use a free piece of software called keypass password safe. You could easily use it to save user names, passwords and serials if you wanted. Just don't forget to hit save before exiting the application if you have made some additions.

    • google sheets? excel? notepad?

    • Call me old fashioned but i still like to have a physical copy of this kind of info

I just use a school book and write it all down in pen

      • Old fashioned

    • There's an app called simply "Purchased Apps"…shows all apps you've paid for

    • gmail

    Thanks, purchased!

I far prefer Emby - rock solid and works!

    • Did you find Plex didn't work or wasn't rock solid - or other reasons?

      • +1

Plex is a lot more solid, but both plex and emby have their own set of issues, its best you try both.

  • Admittedly I rarely watch movies and almost never TV, but isn't this thing still a bit pricey for the average person's needs? And then there's talk of needing another subscription anyway for an EPG?

I have no idea but wanted to challenge the status quo.

    • for me it's normally because the discount is only 20 or 25% and this is lifetime..

So i figure since i can use it for 20+ years $99 isnt a big deal.

If it was a monthly or yearly fee I'd be a lot more hesitant

  • Have been looking for this discount for a while. Purchased!

  • Can you watch the NBA with Plex?

All this is a bit comPlex for me

    Is Plex compatible with IPTV?

In particular I'm interested in recording live IPTV streams through Smart IPTV app on Samsung TV.

Ps. I have the Plex app on that tv too, I had no idea what it was for.

    • +1

In particular I'm interested in recording live IPTV streams through Smart IPTV app on Samsung TV.

I would like to know if you can use this to record live IPTV streams too… or any other recommendations?

  • What are the benefits of plus over the free non subscription?

  • Can I use this to download files from someone else's server as opposed to streaming?

[edit] I mean the Windows version.

    • The person hosting the Plex server would need to enable the feature to download the file. Not hard just a check box. The thing I am not sure about is if the person hosting the Plex server also requires a Plex pass before the feature become available.

    • The Infuse app lets use do this without Plex Pass (and without the person who owns the servers permission).

      • Unfortunately there is no infuse version for Android that I can find. Seems to be an apple only app

  • +1

Been holding off for years because I just can’t be sure if my HP N54L has enough grunt to transcode on the fly. Anyone here still uses this ancient microserver?

    • Unsure and it'll depend on your media, but there's some guidelines at https://support.plex.tv/articles/201774043-what-kind-of-cpu-…

From a google it looks like the CPU has a passmark in the 2.5k range so you can get away with 1x 1080p transcoded stream.

You may also find you don't need to transcode depending on the media format and it's quality, your network and the end devices capabilities. You could install for free and see how you go if your endpoints don't need a paid app.

        • In that case yeah, out of luck. Best bets probably to avoid transcoding or to use the N54L as a NAS and run Plex on something else with the N54L as file storage.

          • @Smigit: Bought anyway. Will see how it goes lol

I do have an unused NUC with Celeron N2820 (with Intel HD Graphics). I wonder if the IGP can do hardware transcoding. Trying to keep the power usage down here.

    • yep and it cant. pushes the cpu way to hard if there are multiple users. nearly killed my n54l

    • Had the same server and unfortunately it wont cut it.

    • I've been using an N40L in conjunction with my LG smart tv. I'm able to stream 1080p flawlessly. I have done some 4k e.g. The Dark Knight. Hasn't been perfect but certainly good enough if I could be bothered sourcing 4k content regularly.

I have an SSD for Windows volume but otherwise media on standard spindle drives.

  • FYI if the code doesnt work for you, I remember there was a similar one previously where the code did not work if you are a current monthly subscriber (or in trial)
I had to create a new login, signup on lifetime pass there, and change over the login attached to my server, then change all the devices logins

oh, and those worried about EPG, I found xmltv works just fine - if not better than the previous EPG integrated

  • Never mind, already mentioned

  • Do I need to run a plex media server to actually get all my media in 1 place? I at first thought Flex Media Server is an online service, but if I had to run my own server, the first thing that comes to me is backup. If it doesn't come with a few TB online backup space I probably can't make efficient use of this Plex?

    • +2

Not sure what you mean by "get"? Plex server scans through the locations that you provide (which can be local, network or cloud) and then classifies/identifies the media, provide metadata, allow playback (transcoding) etc. So short answer, yes, you'll need to run a server and provide the storage. Once you've done that you can access the media from various devices and locations, including remote access

  • Can someone please explain to me what I need apart from the Plex Pass to use my home PC as a DVR? Thank you

    • You have the PC so you would need to by a PC digital tv tuner and have it plugged into your house tv antenna which isnt normally where your PC is located. They have a list of supported tv tuners on their website.

  • If i had a plex server running at home and a plex pass, could i stream media via my phone to a chromecast at a friends place? Cheers

    • +1

You can do that without Plex pass you just need to setup remote access from the free version. You can then download the Plex app for your phone it costs 5usd

    • +1

As Fornax said, yes, but you need to been on NBN or Cable. ADSL wont cut it because you need a decent upload speed from your home.

I let family from overseas access my Plex Server, works a treat. It does have issues during peak Australian times, but they can change the quality from 'Original' to 1080 or 720p.

You dont need a Plex pass to do this though. I dont really see the benefit in the Plex pass. The only reason I would get is to allow unique users to log in so I can track their usage and to use GPU for transcoding, but I prefer not to transcode, obviously. And my CPU can handle about 4x 1080 transcodes. So not really a problem.

  • +2

Perfect timing thanks OP. Was literally searching around for a limetime discount, and for some stupid reason didn't check OzB first!

  • +1

Thanks OP. Worked for me. I've used Plex for 6 years now. The features don't really help me that much except maybe offline watching of my media on multiple devices. I thought after 6 years it was about time I supported the Devs lol.

  • Has anyone priced out the cost of running this in a cloud service like AWS or GCP? I love Plex but I'm frequently travelling interstate for work and if my server falls over nobody is around to give it a kick. I'm also on cable still so upload speeds won't support it. As much as I'd love to grab a Plex pass and be done with it, my circumstance just won't benefit from it.

I want to run my full media stack in the cloud, but am somewhat concerned about the price. This would be a sonarr+sabnbd+Plex stack with about 6tb of storage.

Anyone crunched the numbers for ongoing costs?

    • Another user in this thread suggested ultraseedbox which supports plex on their server. That would fit your needs perfectly. Looks to cost about 36 a month for 6tb storage.

    • -1

yeah its annoying u cannot put stuff online

    • Why not just use the Mobile Sync feature offered by the Plex Pass subscription? Sure you would have to download content to your mobile device/s before each trip, but it certainly beats having to maintain a cloud service.

    • If you are upload constrained, will you have any issues getting your content onto a server to begin with? Obvious upload can happen slower than a stream has to, but just something to consider if you have a large library and restrictive outbound traffic either due to speeds or data caps.

  • I mainly use 10play, 9now etc for the odd TV show, or download the odd series but don't otherwise watch much tv. I have youtube subscription too. Is there any real benefit to plex aside from the fact that it takes me a bit of mucking around for my shows?

  • i dont see the point of free vs paid except for tablets…..

I cant care less about free-to-air DVR features.

Surprised how many votes it's got.

Every time I see these deals, I get caught in the hype & want to buy it… Until I read the feedback.

    • +5

I agree, I feel like most people are just buying it because everyone else is and without researching to see if it's actually beneficial to them or not.

      • -1

u can just refund if u dont like it i am guessing

      • I held off. I'm not ready to go all in on one of Plex vs Emby vs Kodi vs MRMC because I don't know what's best for me yet

      • Follow the sheep ., ya ..

    Thanks OP!

Everyone knows couch potato is free right ?

I mean I know this gives you streaming between devices but there are plenty of free alternatives for that too or am I missing something ?

I guess everything is in one place and people are paying for convenience ?

But I thought this was ozbargain!!!

    • +2

Everyone knows couch potato is an equivalent to radarr right?
Not to Plex. Different use, different set of features.
Plex has equivalent in Emby (paid) or Jellyfin (free)
So you can argue you an get jellyfin for free.
But again - it is like downvoting a Mercedes price deal based on Kia being cheaper. And both will move you from A to be on 4 wheels.
