Plat charge: received the spend $650 get $100 credit on my primary and supp cards
Plat reserve: did not receive offer
Plat edge: received a spend $250 get $50 credit on my primary and supp cards

    • Same with me

Off topic, any reason why you have the plat edge as well as the charge and reserve? Always on the lookout for extra perks :)

Hmmm good question. I started with the Plat Edge first.
Mine is a professional affiliation card, so $149 annual fee for $200 travel credit is already a good start.
Plat Edge still gives 3pts at supermarkets - was more valuable when 3pts=3 miles, but still 3pts=1.5 miles is more than the 2.25pts (1.125 miles) from the Plat Charge.
And of course another card account to use for the statement credits haha.

I then got a Plat Charge, which at the time came with free Plat Res. Another card for statement credits. So that's my life story. #coolstorybro

        • I've got the same combo with you. Are you with CA?

          • @chino8826: Yes. A bit bummed the partnership ended. Means if you give up the card, can't get it back again.

        • Ah thanks dude. Makes sense.
I thought you somehow managed to get the plat edge without annual fee and got the credit like the charge/reserve.

          • @ddxsamx: I've got the Professional Plat charge, Companion Reserve and a Gold Charge with Complementary Platinum Edge card. This combination gives me $850 in travel credits for the Professional Plat Charge & reserve; plus an additional $200 edge credit for the $110 annual Gold Charge Card Fee. Not sure they do this combination anymore but was an amazing offer back when they offered it to me.

Before the recent points changes the Edge earned way more points on most everyday spend and you can get the points associated with the Platinum Charge (ascent premium or whatever it is).

I think it still earns marginally more but slightly less appealing now. My annual fee is $149 and the $200 travel credit offsets it pretty nicely.

    • Was the other way around for me

Plat Edge: did not receive an offer
Plat reserve: received a spend $250 get $50 credit

I got $250 spend, $50 back on Explorer

I got spend $250 or more get $50 on my platinum edge.

Limited to the first 3,500 Cards to save the offer.

Mine says "Limited to the first 7,500 Cards to save the offer. "

Usually American Express travels is expensive than other travel websites, but I am hoping to redeem my yearly travel credit along with this.

Yep. This. I recently booked a return trip via Air NZ directly. The exact same flights were ~$100 more on AmEx Travel which was disappointing.

      • Same here with the NZ trip

    • +6

Watch out for the exclusion and terms. Flights are excluded, and the cash component must meet the min spend if paying by cash + points or travel credits.

    • +1

Agreed, disappointed with the pricing. Only ever use it for the travel credit spend (hotels only, for clarity), but could usually get it cheaper elsewhere too.

I use Amex travel a few times each year and I find they can be hit and miss, sometimes more expensive other times not so. In the past week I've booked a rather complex South East Asian trip. Amex travel were at least $500 cheaper than booking directly with Vietnam Airlines. In the past I've found them the same as booking flights to South East Asia as through both Singapore Airlines website and Virgin. That being said I've had times they have been more expensive with flights too. Hotels have generally been more expensive to book, except on a couple of occasions in New Zealand and Newcastle. With cruises I've found them exactly the same as Cruise Companies.

I've actually occasionally found some 'experiences' slightly cheaper than booking directly via operator websites.

      • Did you have to call them up to book that complex flight? Their website seems pretty basic and might not work for complex itineraries.

        • Yes website is pretty pathetic, I also used them for a couple of couple of complex bookings (eg RTW with 16 flights) where I couldn't use any online tools, did it over the phone & email and worked out pretty well + beating Flight Centre in cost & speed (note this was with Charge Platinum travel team)

          • @bauser99: Yes I deal with them via phone and email, again using the charge platinum team and they are been terrific.

I agree Amex are very hit and miss, usually more miss than hit. But when you get a hit, can be quite peculiar and surprising. One of those times for me was trying to book a hotel in SFO during the week of a big conference - could not get a major chain 4-star hotel below $450-500 anywhere, but then Amex randomly pops up with one of the Hiltons for $350 tax included

FWIW the last few times I’ve booked domestic travel, I’ve done it through Amex Travel because they were $20-$30 cheaper.

    • I find AMEX Travel to be comparable to direct booking with airlines.

EDIT: Just found out flights are excluded.

  • Explorer 250 get 50 back

  • Nothing on the DJs Amex or Velocity Escape (expected that for the latter though)

  • Bugga. Nothing on my Qantas AmEx Ultimate card.

    • I've not had any offers populate on mine yet (which I got 2 weeks ago) - do I need to pay the AF before they start showing?

  • +1

    Nothing on Explorer

Kinda don't want to see it I just bought flights on the weekend using up by $400 travel credit and topping up by $300!

    • +4

Flights are excluded anyway so you're not missing much.

  • Where is it supposed to pop up? The link doesn't seem to work for me.

Edit: I think I found it upon logging in. Nothing for me. :(

  • Nothing on my explorer card. Had to book tickets, it would have been nice add on.

    • +2

Don't worry, flights are excluded so you wouldn't have been able to use this offer anyway.

  • Got the 50 off 250 spent offer.

  • Anyone got the manual sign up link?

    • It appears to be targeted only.

amex travel website is the biggest POS there is

  • got this on all my plat branded cards including supplementary accounts "spend $250 or more, in one or more transactions, online only at travel.americanexpress.com.au by 28/08/2019 to receive one $50 credit. Limited to the first 7,500 Cards to save the offer. Exclusions apply.
    Offer Terms

Excludes payments for flights or cruises.
    Excludes payments made via phone."

i was excited when i seen the offer as i wanted to book a flight using my $400 travel credits for children which can only be done over the phone so its a shame that flights and bookings done via phone don't count. does anyone know if you can buy amex travel gift cards or stuff in store>? this offer is useless to me unless i use card to book car rental and hotel stays i guess.

  • Question folks.
I'm going to cancel my Explorer card next week before the fee is taken out for the next year.
The $400 travel credit has already been applied to my account however.

Whats the deal with using the credit and then cancelling the card as planned?

    • use it before you cancel or you loose it

      • I've already used any I got. This new travel credit is for this year coming in whereby the fee will be applied to my account in 2-3 weeks.

  • I got spend $250 get $50 back with Platinum Reserve

  • No offers for me. I have a Discovery card.

  • I got spend $250 get $50 back with Explorer.

  • I don't think any ozbargainers would have the Centurion card.

  • got the spend $250 get $50 back on my explorer where I have already used my $400 travel credit, my partners explorer still has her $400 travel credit but did not get the offer… coincidence? i think not…

  • Will this work for both main cards and supp cards?

  • I know it says 'Excludes payments for flights or cruises' but is this like HN gift card thing? or do they actually check what the payment is for? Does anyone know?
