So people are paying Amazon $100+ to put a camera in their house? lol

I guess they already know enough about my shopping habits, why not take it the next step further

    • What do you think is on your phone and on your laptop?

      • -2

Yea but but…. Amazon and google is bad…

  • +3

Interesting that it comes with a built-in camera shutter.

    • +6

To help the environment. Stops people wasting tin foil, making hats

      • +1

Or <1 roll duct tape :)

    • Just like the lenovo and the nest max

  • +2

They matched JB or JB matched them. What I’m trying to say is it’s the same price at both places.

    • +4

      You said it well. Thanks.

  • Does anyone know when the JBHIFI sale ends? I want to grab this as late as possible from amazon

  • How does this compare to Google home hub anyone have both?

    • Just be aware they belong to two different smart home eco systems, and you kinda forced to buy the one eco system you already have.

      • +4

I have both google mini and echo dots at home

    • +3

as a developer of smart home skills, google is quite behind in terms of some feature that youd expect to be there pretty standard.

      • +1

Tho Amazon is also slack in releasing everything to australia as well

  • Been waiting for one of these to replace my ancient bedside clock. Have an echo plus 1g at the moment so expecting a bit of a drop in sound quality but from all reports is excellent as a bedside clock radio.

    • Hmmmm be careful about it recording sounds and sending the recordings to humans to "help with development of speech recognition". Or you may talk in your sleep and order a whole heap of stuff from Amazon!

    • Isn't it really bright as a bedside clock? I feel like you can only get it so dim and it would still light up the room.

      • Yep, I have heard about that brightness too, so no good for a good sleep. How about having a device with camera in your room? Or tape the camera eye?

  • Does the echo 5 actually play dab+ stations via standard digital broadcast? Or can it only do it via an app, streaming though internet? It's only just occurred to me now to look into that. From a quick google, seems like it is app/internet based radio….

    • I think it's just the same as all of the other Echos. So you can play via iHeart, radioapp, tunein. Others as well. Not sure how this compares to DAB+ though.

      • So if there is no "landed" internet at home, and everyone is using their own mobiles for internet, it seems like you would have to setup the phone as a hotspot and connect the echo5 to it to get radio…

        • +1

I think that's correct. TBH, I think it would be a total pain running it via a phone hotspot.

          • +1

@tonydav: Yeah. I'll stick with my Philips Dab clock radio :)

        • You can't really use an Echo without a permanent internet connection.

Yes you can connect via a hotspot, but again kinda completely nullifies the convenience of the device.

      • Depends on how good your internet. I find I heart to be better from sonos

First time I've had officeworks price match without spending 15+ minutes trying to come up with a reason to reject it.

I'm off to play with my 5 inches.

    • +2

I was going to, but it's easier to order via Amazon, already registered and with the Cashback much the same price.

      • I was going to, but no local stores had stock so Amazon is delivering it Friday.

  • Excuse my ignorance but why would i get one of these and not just use my Android phone? What is the benefit?

    • +1

Google Amazon Alexa smart home. Totally different stuff.

    • +1

Why get a smart speaker if you have a phone

    • Because its just there. Don't need to unlock, don't need to open an app, don't need to muck around with apps and Android BS, it just works.

We use the bigger Show all the time for recipes, shopping list, to buy some basic stuff, to play music and music videos, to do video chat. All these things I can do with a single action or sentence, but on a phone those would be like "find phone, unlock, open app, type in what I want or press buttons..".

  • what can this do that my phone on a stand cant?

    • +1

      Lighten ya wallet $109 ?
      😄

  • Does this have the drop in feature?
