"With the HDMI 1.0 data output, it makes sure you can enjoy 4K movies."

HDMI 1.0? Is that meant to be 2.0?

Also, if you're a real ozbargainer, you'd buy a laptop with a busted screen and use that instead.

if you're a real ozbargainer, you'd buy a laptop with a busted screen and use that instead.

Or just get them for free when neighbours don't want to deal with the disposal effort.

    • Another part of the description refers to HDMI 2.0. though.

  • the CPU in this is from 2013… i wouldn't recommend it.

    • +7

still better than n3450 from the triangle pc , or j3455 celeron nuc

      • +1

Heat could be an issue though. And you've got to question where they got stock from….

        • +1

15w tdp can be passive cooled by looking at the alu top of case lid

      • i think i have one of those msi nucs with the n3450, does this I7-4500U handle x265/x264 4k playback any better?

    • +2

the CPU in this is from 2013…

That's not inherently a bad thing - plenty of CPUs from 2013 better than CPUs made today.

      • +23

Older CPU's have more experience and know how things are supposed to run.

        • Hahaha fantastic, +1.

        • +2

They can also be grumpy and refuse to get out of bed…

        • and they didn't worry about vulnerabilities, they just got the job done

  • +1

Is this new old stock? The components are very dated.

  • +3

Is this refurbished? The parts are ancient!

Where does my RGB go in this?

  • Ive been meaning to get something which allows me to stream stuff on my Non-Smart TV. Is this the right device for this? Will I have to buy HDD for this?

    • +2

Better off getting Nvidia shield for streaming with this budget. If you want cheaper get voda TV.

      • or even telstra TV.. can pick them up off facebook or cashies for under $50

      • +2

I'm in love with my NVIDA Shield… Does everything including Dolby Atmos on everything - (ie Plex). Where Apple TV and XBox only support Atmos on their own apps - not on their versions of Plex.

    • RAM and drive not included.

    • Voda TV, $72. Including RAM :)

In my opinion, if you want a basic HTPC you'd be better off getting a "refurb" USFF ex-office PC next time you see one on ozb. Will probably cost about the same as this and come with RAM and HDD. They are generally pretty bulletproof, but obviously they're going to be secondhand and not be fanless.

      • For $200 Nvidia shield is better in almost every way.

        • Can you browse chrome on it?

          • +1

@prizefightinyeti: You can sideload Chrome and browse the Web or use puffin browser which is optimized for TV. It also has Chrome cast built-in so you can cast Chrome to it.

      • I agree. I have one of these boxes (dual nic) for my router, but my Plex server is a refurb Dell 9020m off eBay. CPU is way better in the Dell and does quick sync transcoding.

  • This would make for a decent (headless) Home Assistant server. Only neg is power consumption.

  • +1

Description's a little misleading, "supports" Windows 10 is different from shipping with it.

    • That's why it says "supports" though - curious how they should word it otherwise? Or was the description changed?

      • Ah yeah, it's been updated now

  • Phew. It’s got VGA.

  • +1

Few points, bottom looks like it has space for a fan, no RAM or disk included

CPU’s have not progressed that much in IPC since then, not enough to notice a difference in the typical application of something like this

    Not bad inside;

I think there's also no Wifi card either, so that also needs to be purchased separately.

I didn't realize it at first but have added it to the description now.

Actually hard to recommend this as a HTPC, when you consider the costs of adding RAM ($30~40), storage ($30~50 for minimal amount) and a Intel-based wifi pcie card ($25) you are close to the purchase price of say, an SFF Dell Optiplex system, or a Lenovo ThinkCentre M73 (Very SFF) which you can buy locally.

    An example.

    • I agree, though you could argue that it's for a different market. There are people who need/want things to be passively cooled and/or extremely small. The deal breaker for me is only one LAN port, otherwise, it would have made a decent pfSense router.

  • Is it good for Linux server?
Will it have issues with drivers for Linux?

  • dual or quad core?

  • I’m looking at getting a PC for home, haven’t had one in years… how does this compare to ASUS VivoMini UN65U-7I5M041M Barebone Kit 7th Gen i5-7200U which I’ve been eyeing up the last fortnight? Thanks

  • I've got a similar model XCY fanless mini PC with a WiFi card and antennas and added my own RAM, SSD and hard drive. It cost me $125 from Aliexpress (it has a slower CPU than this one) and I'm very happy with it. The quality seems to be very good.

I bought this remote for it, which is designed for Windows 10.

I also bought a cheap ($4.50) USB Bluetooth adapter.

I installed Windows 10 and activated it with an unused Windows 8 product key. You can still upgrade for free to Windows 10 from Windows 7 or 8.

It needs DDR3L RAM. Normal DDR3 RAM won't work.
