So tempted to get this and sell my new dual boiler. (I realise the dual boiler is the better machine but that grinder and start up time…)

    • +1

Yes was going to say the same. This is the Digital version of Barista Express. Nothing to rave home about. It’s a good machine but dual and smart grinder combo will smash it out of the park

      • What’s the difference between the grinder it comes with and a smart grinder combo? Also what’s the difference between dual boiler vs the one it comes with?

        • Smart grinder is more versatile. The Grinder built into the machine is very mechanical as in it uses a dial on the side as well as cone adjustments. But the most important thing is if anything breaks you probably lose both the grinder and the machine.

Also dual boiler is a 3 year warranty machine. The barista express is 1 year. I’m not sure about this version

          • @Michaelz101: Hmmm. Thanks for that. The Breville website says 2 year warranty.

            • @Krazyy: I was referring to my model the barista express 860 which is 1 year warranty

          • @Michaelz101: I am coming from a breville BES840BSS at the moment.

            • @Krazyy: What grinder are you using with the 840?

              • @kronicmacstigator: Breville BCG820BSS

                • +1

@Krazyy: I'd honestly save your cash and buy something good 2nd hand or a new dual boiler. The only real difference is the quicker heat up time (840 vs 878). I'd ride that 840 until it dies because they are an entry level machine which beginners won't buy 2nd hand due to no grinder and you would be ripping yourself off throwing it in :(

I asked my instructor to review the 878 grinder vs the BCG820 but no dice :(

      • barista express is 52mm tho right this has a bigger basket

  • Anyone have any opinions of this model vs the 870 (express)?

    • The BES840 is ancient. Breville need to kill it. The faster heat up and transfer time to steam is insane compared to (878 vs 840) plus all the extra features are great.

Would need to have the 840 sub $400 to get my interest. That being said… If you already have a grinder this is dual boiler money

      • Whoops! Meant 870! Would edit but a bit late now

    • I dont think the display on screen warrants paying $200+ extra for the pro over the 870. Its not that hard to work out grind volume using the dial with a couple test runs. Appears the heating element might be quicker? But I have never found that the 870 has slowed me down, by the time I am done grinding and tamping heat is sufficient to pull a shot followed by frothing the milk.

Only the dual boiler would make things quicker as you could pull a shot whilst frothing milk I think but then you need a seperate grinder.

      • Grind pause function, digital display, shot timer and quicker start-up time. I think it's worth the extra.

It really comes down to how much you want to spend for how much automation you need/want.

Some people prefer a dirty cheap machine with everything built in which is the 870. 878 for extra help and 880 if they can't froth :)

        • theres an 880 model??

          • @furythree: 880 is Barista Touch, slightly unsure of the difference but it has the three second thermojet system as well as an automatic milk frother. Like the Oracle Touch but cut down if you don't mind grinding/tamping yourself :) Well worth it in my opinion vs the BES990.

That being said… it is thermojet vs dual boiler. But unless you have a real office setup the BES880 is a great cost effective choice especially at $1000.

  • +1

I don't know about this model but the Barista Touch with the touchscreen I got for around $1000 changed our lives. Fresh Pablo and Rusty beans every morning x 200 cups so far between use.

    • I'd go for the touch if frothing milk is hard :)

    • Agreed.
