AmEx Double Referral Bonus

910

The American Express Double Referral offer is back!

I stumbled across this when getting a referral for a friend and noticed the points on offer seemed bigger than usual. Then I checked some of my other cards.

Should also mention that since the April deval most Membership Reward points convert to frequent flyer programs at 2:1, where as Velocity and Qantas co-branded cards convert at 1:1.

If you find any corrections please let me know in the comments.

last card id refer to people now with the 50% drop in point value

    • +11

Bear in mind, the sign-on/referral bonus for QF/VA cards is still full value, the earn rate has reduced slightly for most. It’s only the Explorer/Plat/Edge warehoused reward cards that have lost significant value from the changes.

    • +1

      What's the best, now?

    • +1

The earn rate has increased, so it works out to be a 25% drop in point value.

Bank issued reward cards were hit a lot worse.

      • Pretty Sure it was a 50% point drop in April. Did they increase it you think?

        • +1

The points value dropped by about 50%, but the earn rate increased by roughly 25%, so the overall inflation in the rewards store is about 25%.

          • @lostn:

The points value dropped by about 50%, but the earn rate increased by roughly 25%

            Which earn rate increased?

              Select your card and compare.

The changes on my Essential card are:

              Government: 0.5 -> 1
              Utilities, insurance and telecommunications: 0.5 -> 1.25
              All other spend: 1 -> 1.25

The main spend earns 25% more points than before, though bills went up by double or more.. if they accept AMEX.

However, the redeem rate of a $100 gift card went from 13,500 to 20,000, an extra 48%. It's an overall nerf to your rewards but not by 50%.

Meanwhile, Altitude Rewards and NAB rewards tanked hard.

  • I'm a fan of the David Jones Amex because it gives you free delivery from David Jones and doesn't preclude you from other Amex sign up bonuses.

    • +3

Just typically not as good sign on bonuses. It’s the ‘I’m getting desperate for QFF points’ card when you’ve hit all the other banks

    • +16

The problem is that you have to order from David Jones..

    • So no 18 month rule?

  • -1

What is it that makes this a "double" referral bonus as oppose to a normal referral bonus?

I'm under the impression that this has always been on offer by Amex and this was never "gone"

    • +4

Double means double (twice as much or 200%) You can normally get 50% of the above bonuses beautifully presented in the table.

  • If I get referred by someone and I had this card recently, do I still receive the referee bonus?

  • +1

Does the referral bonus stack with any other sign-up bonuses?

    • +1

That's what I'm interested in as well.

I.e. if the Qantas AMEX Ultimate currently has a sign-on bonus of 55k points, does using the referral code mean the person signing up now gets 55k + 65k = 120k points?

      • Can confirm I am only seeing 65k only for referee on this card. So doesn't look like it stacks

      • +1

No it doesn’t stack with the current 55,000 sign on bonus for Qantas ultimate for example, only gives you an extra 10,000 points as the referee. To be honest, it’s better waiting for when Pointshack has their special offers (expired early this week, they had a 100,000 sign on bonus, 45,000 extra when they referred you).

  • The referral link on OzB to get to your referral link is dead.

SORRY, it looks like something went wrong.
    This could be:
    - A missing character
    - Incorrect character case
To correct please check the American Express Referral Link before trying again.

I don't even know how to find my referral link now.

    • +1

If you’re using the Amex app go to Account in bottom right then refer a friend

  • Referred someone last week for 40,000 and now it's 60,000. Guessing that's tough luck. So annoyed

    • That's a $100 gift card you just missed out on.

      • at best……

most people value the points at 1c a point so that's $200. points are worth even more if used wisely.

mouseman99 should be kicking himself and should invest in a crystal ball for future use….

        • To get 1c per point does that require converting the points to some other rewards program?

          • @lostn: I'm referring to Qantas points in this instance (forgot this a general Amex referral thread and not just Qantas).

If you're getting Qantas points you can see find buyers for those online (here in ozbargain).

  • For the David Jones cards what's the equivalent in Qantas points when converted?

  • For anyone who hasn't signed up for the Amex Ultimate card, it's well worth it. If you fly Qantas internationally at least once per year, you're well ahead.

  • Can you only refer a friend to the same card as you? I have the ultimate but want to refer someone to get discovery? When I click on the link only shows the ultimate referral offer. Thanks

    • +3

yeah you can. Im on Explorer and referred someone to the Velocity Plat and got the points

      • Do you know how? When I click on the refer a friend link it only shows Ultimate? I have also spoken to Live help and they couldn't help

  • Good to see the bonus numbers have increased. It sucked paying over 1k for the platinum and only getting 100k points (equiv 50k post deval) - still doubt that it appeals to anyone not putting business expenses through.

  • Can you refer someone who is a supplementary card holder on your amex card?

    • +4

      Yes

  • New to CCs, these look like pretty good deals… anyone care to comment on the Qantas Ultimate and Premium here, vs the Velocity Platinum deal?

Both "groups" have good coverage for the international flights I usually make (~twice a year), but how "valuable" are the points, how easy is it to actually use them for a flight, etc? The Velocity thread has some comments about it being impossible to find availability with points?

  • Does this mean I can get the Qantas Ultimate with 120k points instead of the 100k offer that amex is currently offering just by going through one of these referral links?

  • Hi. If I use any of the above links to apply Amex Qantas Ultimate (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/471886), will I get 100K points + 65K points? Can someone please clarify

    • +1

no its either one. btw legacy cards are offered cash credits instead of points. the offer i got on my reserve card it is $200 if i refer anyone to any card, but i rather value the 60k Velocity points more so shall be referring via the plat Velocity card.
