Highly recommended when paired with a SUB. Remodelled the Lounge Room last year and went for this combo to offer a uber-minimalist solution. Of course it'll never offer the imaging of discreet speakers however it continues to surprise me at how good it performs plus with the BEAM mounted directly under the TV on the wall bracket and the SUB tucked beside the couch the whole system is close to invisible & clutter free. Not for everyone but an excellent solution for those who want very good sound without the bulk & complexity of a 'proper' Home Theatre.

  • Any idea how this compares to the PlayBase?
Just entering into the Sonos world, of course with my free Sonos One from a JB/Telstra deal a while back

I've never heard them side-by-side however I'm sure the PlayBase has far more 'oomph' especially in the low end. Are you planning to add a SUB, ever?

Planning… If the world were perfect, I'd say yes. I heard bass again for the first time in a long time when I got the One, and reminded me that bass is in my blood. So, yeah, sub is on the cards. But I find it hard to justify Sonos cost for one…

I was deeply saddened not to be financial enough to grab the Base last night for $449 :(

Hmm. Yeah, really not sure then. The reason I personally don't like the PlayBase is that it limits your TV placement moving forward. You wont always have the TV you have at the moment nor the furniture you currently have and the PlayBase may become a pain in the butt if you were wanting to change things in the future (eg. mount the TV on a wall etc.) as all SONOS products should outlast your TV 2-3 times over! Food for thought anyway. A BEAM and a SUB combo just make things easier IMO but of course they're a big investment initially.

          • @SteveAndBelle: Does that mean there's no sub required with the Base?
They are, and I used to scoff at their prices, but after getting the One, I understand why

@parad0x: I think that's all subjective. I'm sure the PlayBase will sound great and may not need a SUB however that's all up to you and your ears. The BEAM sound pretty decent by itself however adding the SUB just drives those lows home nicely :) Compliments the BEAM nicely and makes it good enough to use for movies & music for that zone so nothing else is required.

              • @SteveAndBelle: Yep, I hear ya. Thanks heaps for the Sonos 101 through your eyes, appreciate it :)

                • @parad0x: I've owned SONOS gear since 2007, back when the SONOS ZP120 (aka: AMP) was worth $2000! Had to build my system up very slowly due to the cost but yeah, nothing's come close to its versatility since then so although a very big investment and massive risk at the time it has definitely paid off :) My original ZP120 is still working to this day too and it's been through four house moves and many different configurations. Love my SONOS gear and the BEAM & SUB look to continue that legacy.

                  • @SteveAndBelle: That's certainly well before it made it onto my radar!
Just out of curiosity, have you managed to get Google Assistant working on any compatible devices?
Sonos online support suggested I plug my Sonos directly into my Ubiquiti wireless AP as a solution. They then suggested maybe give the phone support a call haha

                    • @parad0x: Nah. We're not very interested in the assistance stuff sorry. Maybe someone else can chime in?

  • No one comment on the price yet.

I saw the playbase deal this “early” morning. Although the price was good, and I had the chance to place an order and I did wish I did place the order AFTER it’s gone, I know clearly what I want is the beam. I have a play 5: 2nd gen.

    • I got mine via Amazon for about this price last year so it's good but nothing amazing.
