  • I remember seeing a guy at Costco stroll out with a flatbed trolley full of what looks to be the same set. Price back then (around Season 2 I think) was in the $30s too… wonder how he went with them all.

If you have not read the books and you were disappointed with the show. Buy them, they are damn worth reading. By the Old Gods and the New they're worth reading even if you loved the show all the way to that bitter-sweet ending.

The series is incomplete. There are 5 books out in total so far (two of which are split in two above and that's why it says 7 books).

The 6th book in the series will likely be released next year as George R R Martin hinted that he should have it done before his trip to New Zealand mid-Next year. So it will likely be released in the second half of next year.

The final book in series will likely be a long wait away, but nevertheless, I cannot stress enough how far superior the narrative of the books are in comparison to the show, especially compared to the later seasons of the show.

I purchased the same set from Dymocks for around $80 in 2012/13.

    • I am near the end of the third book. I'm loving it so far but I just got to the stage where you're starting to see some huge differences in pacing of events. Very much looking forward to reading the rest.

      • I envy you going through them for the first time. Book four is very different to the 3rd book and the remainder of the series, the only advice I can give is just delve into those coming narratives, give them the attention that you gave the previous three books. Because on a re-read, book 4 is so important to hitting home the overall message of the story. And with how the show turned out, many realised why it was so important for those narratives to not be removed (as they were in the show).

The next book has been continually to be released next year. I'm certain that GRRM is unable to finish any series which is a shame since as mentioned it is great series with a rich world and lore.

    Probably prefer the kindle version

does dis dude dink hes done?

I have the first two books, both were great, but I don't want to buy a book set if the story is incomplete.

    • Don’t worry, he’s getting old and isn’t in great shape. The series will be “done” soon enough either way.

  • Would love to read them, but I just don't have the patience for books anymore.

    • +1

      I get it.

I’ve been so lazy lately I can’t even read anymore. I’m dictating this to my housekeeper because I can’t even remember how written English works.

    • Another casualty of the always on, infinity apps culture?

  • Costco price $44

    • Yep, been that price for ages. Will be cheaper when they clear them out

  • +1

For a moment I thought the whole series was finished lol. 7 books, what a misleading way to market the box set.

  • Had been waiting to get these cheap, thanks, now I have something to read at work…

  • Still showing full price for me even at checkout :(

      Do you have Amazon Prime?

      • +2

Derp, that would be it. Also have no reading comprehension..

        • Hehe :)

  • Sweet! Got it for $18 stacking with the Prime Video $10 off + $10 for using app, though I did have to call support to sort it out.

I have been reading this series / started on it more than 20 years ago. Frankly I am quite pissed off with the George RR martin, completely lost interest in the books once the tv series became a hit and he became a celebrity being invited to give interviews etc. A really selfish attitude to his core fans who basically funded the series and got it to where it is now. Even if he eventually finishes it off, its going to be different to what it would have been if he had maintained his interest to finish it off, since the tv series has gone past the books, it will be too tempting to just copy some of that and have that in the books. Either way who knows he may even pass away before its finished ala Robert Jordan.

Yeah I'm firmly in the same camp. 50/50 if I will even read the next book if/when it ever comes out.
Once I started reading the malazan series (completed main story-line and significantly larger world building), I never looked back.

      • +1

funny you should mention the malazan series, 2 of my fantasy reading buddies also recommended that series to me and i am now on book 3. Very well written characters and story.

      • +2

is that book difficult to follow? I've heard it's extremely ambitious and complex with a lot of things going on all at once and you get thrown straight into the deep end.

Also how does it compare to GRRM's early books? Better? Not as good?

The last two Song books were not his best work. And they took so long to write too.

        • +1

Yeah not going to lie, it was brutal at first. But pushing through the first book I reckon hooks you.
Once you finish a book, the excellent malazanempire.com forum helps you absorb some things without spoiling the next book in the series.

The series goes up and down a bit but it's hard to compare to the GoT books but I will say it almost makes GoT feel like a young adult series. Malazan is complex and full of detail the likes I didn't think was possible until reading the series. The way the author describes some epic battles is just incredible!

And it's universe is ever expanding despite the main 10 book series being finished.

          • +2

@uradox: it impresses me that the author was able to write one book a year. They're not exactly thin books either.

GRRM would have been done almost 2 decades ago if he could write that fast.

            • @lostn: Yep and Steven Erikson just can't stop writing either :)

          • @uradox: yup agree, It is very tough at first, very complex and adult and a lot of intricate politics and story lines and you are in the middle of the story rather than a simple beginning. But it rewards the further you read into it. I do agree sometimes its a bit slow or some characters may not interest you as much as other but overall i feel its a must read for anyone looking for some true adult fantasy.

    • +3

I think GRRM will die before he finishes and another writer will complete it. There's too many loose threads for him to tie down alone.

    • +2

originally he said the show was going to motivate him to writer faster and finish it before they can catch up to him. The last book released the same year that season 1 aired. And he never released another book in the 8 years that followed it.

Now he's working on the prequel shows and some other books.
