    Don't tell me what I won't find >:(

  • +1

But you won’t find updates to the system near other phones does!

    • +13

My V30 just got the April security updates this week. A month before that I got the February updates.

      • but it's almost June. Are you on Pie or Oreo on your V30?

        • +2

In case anyone was wondering, I just checked if we can circumvent the OEM Update path with something else like Custom Roms…
…and seems like there's very little interest/activity for this phone. I know the kernel was released, maybe the bootloader is locked.
          Here's the xda link: https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-v40/development

edit: yes, bootloader is locked for all variants except for a few European countries.
          That also means No Root.

        • V30 is on oreo. But other than security is there anything that your desperately wanting on pie? Name me just a couple. Just 2

          • @Fuzor: Yep been happy with LG speed with updates. Even the minor changes to the camera etc.

      • i got my g7 in November last year, have not gotten any updates at all :'(

      • my nokia 7 plus is on the pie with may update ….

    • -1

      Really?
The main downside of a phone is system updates? lol

    • V series seems to have more consistent update compared to g series

    • +1

Was thinking of ditching my Huawei P20 Pro for this so…

      • Nice!

  • +8

Good lord that is a great price.

    • +6

      Lol, no way.

this is a flagship. that is a midrange. No real comparison.

this beats pixel 3a, all day, any day

      • +4

V40 is a decent phone and does some thing better than the Pixel. Pixel 3a beats the V40 in battery life, camera, software updates and price. So, no, V40 doesn’t beat the Pixel “all day, any day”.

        • -5

You obvs don't know what you're talking about. The V40 camera would absolutely crush that plastic phone that doesn't even have water resistance. My V40s on par if not better than the normal Pixel 3

          • -5

            @Bargainbrother:

Confirmation bias will make you think anything to justify your purchase. I can link any number of YouTube direct comparison videos if you really need to see the proof, but the Pixel kills the V40 on image quality. It’s not even close. The V40 is more versatile with the additional wide angle and tele lenses, but Pixel destroys V40’s main camera in every aspect.

        • +5

lol @ pixel, just lol. overpriced just like apple.

        • +14

          1) Pixel 3a is much slower. Soc is midrange. LG is 845. No comparison.
          2) Build quality? One is plastic.
          3) Does pixel 3a have ultra-wide angle or/and zoom lens?
          4) Pixels has bezels from 2014
          5) Audio?
          6) Ram? 4vs6 (4 is already to little)
          7) Storage? 64gb vs 128gb? Sd card?
          8) Fm radio?
          9) Speakers? Audio output?
          10) Wireless charging?

There is no real comparison, LG V40 is above 3a's league

      • Isn't the G7 flagship, now being replaced with the G8?

  • This is beautiful and painful at the same time

  • +4

Finding it hard to choose between this or the grey import Note 9..

    • I'd go the Note 9 or S9+ if you can get them at a reasonable price. They have newer cameras, chipsets, and will be on newer versions of Android with updates to Q at least.

  • +5

I got the v30 and its great

Never buying LG again after their bootloop fiascos

    • Haha the exact same reason I'm looking at changing from an iPhone x😂

    • +11

It’s old story but v30 and v40 have no issue
Au stock so 2 years warranty

    • +8

LG could have handled the situation better, but it's most likely Qualcomm's fault. A lot of phones with the Snapdragons 810 and to a lesser degree, the 808, had heat and throttling issues, but LG was affected more than others most probably due to the thermal solutions used. Heat causes fatigue and degradation. Some HTCs suffered from similar issues.

The first 64-bit SoCs, the Snapdragon 808 and 810, were rushed to market using generic Cortex-A57 and Cortex-A53 cores and suffered from overheating problems and throttling, particularly the 810

Essentially, no widespread bootloop issues have been reported since after the LG G4 and LG V10 - both from 2015. I've had my LG G6 for almost two years now and have not had a single hardware issue. Battery life is still great too. Have not experienced any notable bugs and get ~6 weekly updates. Overall was a very good phone for the price and I'm sure the V40 would be too…

      • had a v20 for 18 mths, never an issue except slow software updates, hardware was great.

      • +1

I'm still using a G4, replaced after bootloop. Still great, with the exception of battery life.

Sounds like LG have lifted their game WRT software updates, I got about three in the 4+ years I've owned it. I wonder if that's a result of Project Treble (the modularisation of the software stack)?

For those comparing this phone to a Pixel, I guess they're junkies for the < 2 year hardware upgrade cycle. As someone who was once addicted to the latest and greatest, I can relate, but if you're planning to keep a device longer, an unlocked bootloader and a platform that actually attracts custom ROM development is a more attractive prospect; even if official support for a device has ended, chances are you will still be able to get major OS updates for several more years.

        • I recall since LG G5 they have locked the bootloader for particular region releases include the Taiwan version from QD AU

Since the G4 bootloop lots of people didn't want to buy LG any more including myself

So then I switched to Samsung for a few years now given up due to high price

        • +2

          Completely agree with hughc.

I'm still on a LG G4 too. Also replaced once due to bootloop. I have had to replace the battery (FYI replacement batteries from eBay are useless and fail after a month or 2, have tried several, sent them all back for a refund as they are terrible; I've found the ones from Amazon US with good ratings tend to work properly for a year but not much more than that, if you have friends/family over there)

My G4 (a Taiwanese model) got its last update in Aug 2016, for a device that was released in April 2015 - i.e. only 16 months of software updates, nothing since then, which was pretty woeful support by LG.

The bootloader is still locked on this V40 phone, same as all the other Australian-stock LG phones. See https://developer.lge.com/resource/mobile/RetrieveBootloader… , then click "Supported Devices", and it's usually just the European market phones that get unlocked. Unfortunately this makes LG's phones far less useful after their support ends, and reduces the demand for custom ROMs.

I'd be willing to consider buying LG again if they did the following, as it would demonstrate that they've learned why people say "never again LG":
          * LG should provide a global hardware warranty (i.e. support you no matter where you bought the device from). LG Australia were really annoying about this during the bootloop fiasco, even though it was a systematic hardware problem caused by LG, they flat out refused to help, period.
          * Commit to a minimum of 2 years of software updates, and ideally 3 years.
          * Unlock the bootloaders for their devices outside of Europe.

          • +1

@nickj: yeah no point to get it if its bootloader is locked. No use after official support channel gone. Need custom roms.

          • @nickj: LG generally only delivers two major updates throughout the lifetime of a flagship phone. As for security patches, most recent LG flagship phones the G6, V30 and V40 are part of the Android Enterprise Recommended program which means the phones must receive security updates within 90 days and one major Android version. LG will often bundle patches and fixes with these updates. Through my experience, LG has delivered on the promise of this program and normally delivered updates within 6 weeks. As for major Android versions, I've received 8.0 and will apparently get 9.0 by the end of July. My phone is a G6 (H870DS)

          • @nickj: On the LG G4 too and had a similar experience with 'LG' branded replacement batteries from eBay - apart from one off-brand battery 'NOHON' which I found to have reasonable performance - nohon.hk if anyone else is looking for this

I'm also on the Taiwanese model (also Aug 16 patch - cmon LG) with the locked bootloader, although unlock (UsU) apparently works on the H815-TWN - https://forum.xda-developers.com/g4/general/unlock-unlock-lg… …. have you tried this?

      • Any idea if this V40 bootloader can be unlocked and rooted with no issues? I would like a more up todate phone that I can root and use my purchased rooted apps which I no longer can do atm with Oneplus 6t

      • I second this.

I had LG G4 with the bootloop issue, had a replacement and then upgraded to LG G6 and hasn't had any issue in the past 2 years of using it. Battery life is still as new so I can only share pleasant experience with G6.

    • +1

      At least they don't explode.

  • What's the cheapest LG G8?

    • +4

I wouldn't bother. The Aus model has a lower resolution screen, no sd slot, no quad dac compared to the international model.

      • +1

I am quite annoyed it's missing the DAC. Only reason I buy LG

      • +1

Oh wow pass. Was looking for a cheapish phone for dad, I'm on the S10+ and it really feels like I'm using the best phone on the planet. Disappointed that LG would downgrade some models like that, especially their signature DAC.

      • Yeah the LG pretty much don't care about Aus market anymore and just give us a lite version. They ain't getting much business so they have given up selling their flagship here

V40 and G7 ThinQ are the last ones with decent specs eg. DAC and display

      • Where did you find this information? source?

  • manually flashed the korean pie into my us v35. that's the only way you get updates from LG

  • +1

Hard to justify this over the G7 at $506, so I bought the G7 instead.
Surprising that deal doesn't have more votes.

    • The V40 would have better camera and 6GB RAM. I have a a G7 and am considering this!

    • There is no lg G7 for that price at the moment…

  • Dear oh dear I just got my LGv30 which I love. Stop me buying this one and claiming the gst via trs.

    Looks like an amazing upgrade.

Reckon I would get $400 for the v30 with warranty and heaps of access?

    • Battery is supposedly worse on this than V30, much worse. Dunno if it has been addressed via update

      • How bad is it compare to v30? Would like to know. Any articles?

  • +1

No root/ROM support kills this phone IMO. Pixel 3a XL remains at the top of my personal wish list.

  • where best to buy screen protector and case for this?
    which brand did you get?
The no brand ones on ebay don't seem to be very good.

  • New redmi should be about this price
