  • Anyone see a neoprene case for these?

    • +1

If you click this link, you can see a neoprene case for the paperwhite.

  • -4

Price seems okay? And if you got that ebay plus $5 off when spending $50, you're doing okay.

    • +6

Just to explain why others have downvoted you, eBay coupons can't be stacked so it would be much worse off if you used the $5 off coupon. Besides the fact that this isn't an eBay plus item….

  • +1

Maybe someone else can confirm, the Kindles are harder or not possible to use to borrow books from library? Elsewhere on Ozb someone was saying this. Hence I bought a Kobo Clara HD which I got from JB-Hifi for $148 by ringing up local store - Cockburn WA, and asked for cheapest possible price. It's easy to borrow books from library via overdrive and you can get really nice cheap covers from Amazon for $11.99 :)

    • +9

You can use calibre to 'borrow' books onto a kindle.

    • +3

Just bought a Kobo Clara from Myer ebay and posted the deal:

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/454002

    • +1

Kindle doesn’t support ePub which is why it’s linited

      • +1

        Also doesn't support overdrive.

    • +1

I would prefer Kobo simply for the overdrive integration and easy of putting in any format in. I have a kobo aura 2 and its had no issues. I bought it second hand but somehow got a replacement (ableit a refurbished one) after it broke. Would highly recommend

  • How does "the Kindle e-book reader's Wi-Fi lets you access new reading material anytime, anywhere" work?

    • +3

It means if you have an internet connection you can purchase from the Amazon Store.

      • -6

An authenticated internet connection? That is nothing to write home about…
I expected to somehow use any internet connection, even password protected…

        Still confused.

        • +6

So you want Amazon to break every encryption system and firewall on earth - so that you can order kindle books more conveniently?

If you want more than wifi then you can get a 3g one (not sure if they're any good).

          • -2

@macrocephalic: Not really, I am not sure what I expected…

But you would think an eBook reader would be able to load the books over an authenticated WiFi by default, as a given, as a minimum, not really a special feature.

            Thanks for the replies anyway.

            • +3

@cristtos: It’s to distinguish the product text from the 3G model that can access books via cellular (with a baked-in fee-free connection).

              • @[Deactivated]: By that do you mean you don't need a simcard and data plan?

It can just connect to the Kindle store over 3g by itself?

I'm asking because I'm looking at buy one for mum this weekend

                • @Whomastadon: Yep. Globally (i.e. no roaming fees).

But (these days) the connection is restricted to accessing only Amazon and Wikipedia. Great for books and reference info, though.

          • @macrocephalic: my old Kindle keyboard +3g just died. but I've been using it for ~8yrs around the world & localkly aND IT was able to buy books easily via 3G. I don't think they allowed emailed books, but you can grab them via wifi. Really handy when you're on holidays and finished all your books or more often then not, someone recommends a few books. Of course you can just do that via wifi easily, So the 3G/4G addition is unnecessary for most people.

            • @[Deactivated]: RIP your kindle.

BTW I had to replace my screen recently and it was pretty straightforward (though the quality is a bit shit). It's easy to swap the battery out if you know it's the issue.

              • @Caped Baldy: I broke the screen on my paperwhite a few months ago. I researched it, and it looked like a replacement screen was going to be more than half the cost of a replacement kindle. I just replaced the whole thing instead.

              • @Caped Baldy: Cheers, yeah the screen just locks up shortly after booting (even after a factory reset). Quite annoying as i took on Easter hols and got 5 pages into my book.

I must say these are nice & light, the backlight is really impressive!

                • @[Deactivated]: Tried amazon support? Don’t know if out of warranty but they replaced an old one of mine with no hastily at all. It was probably only 2 years old though.

  • -1

Is this the latest one? I heard the new one is a downgrade in the resolution department though slightly better battery.

  • +8

Not sure if it's just me, but everytime I see Kindle Paperwhite, I read it as Paperweight.

    • that's a good one

    • Fits when comparing it to a general purpose tablet. E-Ink is cool and all but over-rated.

      • +4

Not if you want to use it for its intended purpose - reading books.

    • Definitely, I was going to post that the OP had a typo in the title!

  • +3

Clara HD is $143 atm through Myer eBay if you're looking for a different brand
edit: never mind! see it's just been posted!

  • Quite weird to see an 802.11n device.

Also really weird to not have support for 5ghz wifi. One day I hope to be able to turn off 2.4ghz all together (unless in cases where a new wifi tech uses it to boost 5ghz performance). I don't want any device relying on a spectrum that gets decimated from heating up dinner.

And why in the hell does this not have Qi charging. People would love to have that. And of course, usb type-c.

Sure, it'll do the job, but damn amazon, you're meant to be the flagship for digital book reading, act like it!

    • -1

Agreed, it's mind boggling to see modern devices still not supporting 5GHz. It's a cost cutting measure, but how much are they really saving?

    • +6

Why would this need 5GHz? 2.4GHz has better range and transfer speed is a non-issue for an e-book.

The whole microwave spectrum argument is complete bogus as well, why compare a 900W microwave with a less than 0.1W router? There's been countless studies confirming no connection between low power EMF / non-ionising radiation and damage to humans PLUS by any logic that low power EMF does cause damage (I am not suggesting this), 5GHz is a higher frequency = higher energy.

      • +2

You missed their point, they were arguing that microwave oven interference stops wifi from working. Personally I never found that to be an issue.

        • in a crowded apartment block 2.4ghz band is almost unusable with so much interference

  • I wouldn't advise purchasing this if you are a heavy night reader. The light is very blue and harsh. It would be better to get the new Kindle (non PW) with backlight which is much warmer. However you give up waterproofing and high dpi. Alternatively, the kobo is a great alternative purchase (posted on ozb) if you are not tied to the Amazon ecosystem.

  • Any chance Officeworks will match this?

  • Does the Kobo have an instant offline translator like the kindle?
Tossing up between which to buy…

  • think and grow rich napoleon hill

  • -2

    Is this backlit?

    • Yes 5 LEds.

  • how many book can we keep for 8gb?
what size is 1 book normally?

    • +1

Thousands. But it is a bit like asking what size is one song or one video or one picture.

  • Thanks OP. Mothers day gift organised. Also sourced a nice cover from Amazon. Hopefully that all comes by next week as that ones not local. Note. The Audio files need to come from Amazon US site. Not available on AU site. Also bluetooth compatible for wireless headphone use.

    • I am unable to see bluetooth option while using amazon Au account. I have to deregister and login using amazon us account to see bluetooth.

      Anyone else facing same issue.

      • I wouldn't be surprised. I went to CS chat and they advised that audio books only work from Amazon US. They did say bluetooth feature is there for wireless headphone, but in the Aus site there's no mention of Bluetooth in spec. I was more concerned that it had the feature and at least workable. Annoying though if you have to use us site.

        • Thanks for info.
I tried changing my country to US (although account is still from Amazon Au), and now i see the Bluetooth option.

          • @sixsense: What do you think of your Kindle so far? Hoping my partner loves it and gives up the paperbacks for e-reader ones.

            • +1

              @Melb69: Pros for me:
The kindle paperwhite e-ink is nice on my eyes. I used to get blurry vision after just a few mins while reading books on ipad/phone but kindle is great and I am reading for 2 hours per day without any eye strain. Its v light and I have got a magnetic cover for it so it wakes up automatically when cover opens. Dictionary is good and once you have tapped on a word, it would show the meaning as well as store it in your vocabulary list for future reference or if you want to master it. I send PDFs to my Kindle email with subject "convert" and the book is converted into kindle format. Reading progress on each book is also handy, pushes you to keep reading more.

              Cons for me:
The feel of holding a book and reading is not there ofcourse. Also no colors except the usual greyscale.

I feel not going back to the paperbacks at all except when kindle battery is finished. You can recharge it once in 2 weeks for peace of mind though I think the charge can go for 3+ weeks based on your reading habits
