Kobo Clara HD $143.96 Delivered @ Myer eBay

400
PROMOMYER

Thought I'd share this as it seems to be the best option for borrowing ebooks from council libraries using Overdrive. Very similar to Kindle but no waterproof or Bluetooth for audiobooks.

    Just purchased! Thanks
Although I think there's a lil typo in the heading.
    AU $143.96

Cheers, I did it all on the mobile which was a bit of a pain! - updated

  • -2

6"? My mobile phone is bigger than that….

    • +7

Different screen shape. This will almost certainly have more screen area than your phone.

6" is also about the size of a paperback book (page). It's a convenient amount of text to put on one page while still being portable. Your phone screen is not as good for reading text on as an e-book.

    • +2

With phones becoming narrower the area of the displays are actually decreasing eg a 3" by 4" screen is the same as a 6" by 2"

    • +3

its perfect size for an e reader

You can get $50 Kobo gift card for $40 too (should work as it's listed under computers instead of gift cards which are excluded)

    • Is it for Kobo app only?

      • +1

It's for eBooks from Kobo store (https://www.kobo.com/au/en)
You can read them using Kobo apps for iOS, Android, PC, Mac or using Kobo eReaders (and I think any eReaders that support ePub)

    Thanks. Bought one.

  • Is it still possible to read your Kindle books on this? I have a Kobo Glo and tried Calibre, but for the life of it cannot put my Amazon collection on it.

    • +1

It is possible, but may require some trickery or format conversions. Checkout Apprentice Alf for Calibre plugins

    • you need to strip the drm from the ebooks before they will work on kobo. look into what sharky_k said.

    • I used to use Calibre, until I got lazy and just clicked/dragged files onto my Glo.
Getting garbled text now occasionally.. Might stick with Calibre.

Is the Clara the next gen of Glo?

  • Is this better than other kindle one that's been, posted? I'm new to ebooks

    • +4

I was looking at both but decided the kobo was easier to work with PDFs and calibre, and has an adjustable backlight temperature… I couldn't care less about waterproof so went with Kobo instead!

    • +9

Depends on what you want. Kobo is significantly better if you want more options for what ebooks you put on your reader without any hassle whereas kindle is a little locked down (loose comparison being kobo = android, kindle = apple).

      • Thanks guys. How's the screen quality? Does the automatic blue light filter work well on the kobo?

        • i can't comment on this particular model as I have a forma but everything's good on my side.

      • I've never tried a kobo, but I have a kindle. Calibre is extremely easy to work with, just load all the books into the library, then select what you want and press transform and load (or whatever the button is).

  • I want an ereader for a trip but I ain't paying for no books. What are my options?

    • +1

There are lots of good books that are out of copyright. This also allows free borrowing of ebooks from many libraries through Overdrive. The books available will vary.
      Otherwise, less savory options…

    • +4

Join your local library. Most have a hugh ebook collection all fully compatible with Kobo ereaders.

      • Are these 'borrowed'?
Or does it give you a permanent digital copy?

    • +1

As others have said, Kobo devices play nicely with overdrive so libraries are definitely an option. I'd also recommend checking out standardebooks.org for well-typeset and proofed books that are out of copyright - there are plenty of great reads available. Project Gutenberg has more content, but it isn't as consistent in quality.

i want to get laid but it aint gonna happen unless i do something about it. do your own research you lazy sob.

    • +1

On top of what others have mentioned, Iā€™d like to add: http://www.openculture.com/free_ebooks

This Kobo eReader will accepts the most common ebook formats (ePub, PDF, MOBI and more if you install KOReader).

didnt know overdrive was available here. never used it, got library gen and qbuttorrents search for electronic pubs to get drunk on

    • Cheers, and great username :)

    • Thanks mate :)

  • The sale is still available at the moment. Bought one. Thanks OP :)

    • The promo code did not work for me :(

      • I just paid some minutes ago. May you try again? or it's sold out?

  • Both ebay and online website did not say out of stock. Just said the code is invalid or cannot be applied.

    • I have no ideas. The code worked for me, just paid as $143.96 AUD

      • +1

Confirmed. Code worked for me as well: just paid $143.96 AUD

  • Im new in this ebook area but what makes ebook better than a smart phone? As far as i know smart phone can do the same job and it is easier to carry around.

    • eBook reader is good for reading under sun, long battery life too, I hear it can last more than a month per charge.

    • The screens on ebook readers are much better for reading, similar to reading print. You can read for hours without staining your eyes. Battery life is much better too.

For anyone who missed it, I visited my local JB and they didn't bat an eyelid when I asked for a price match. I was cheeky and asked for $140 and got it!

    • +1

Any chance you could post a receipt?

      • +1

        Pm'd
Happy to send a receipt to anyone who needs it. Posting pics here is a PITA and I'm not sure on how.

    • didn't JB want to see some sort of proof like a website listing? surprising they would just take price match with no evidence

      • I pulled up the listing but he didn't even look at it. The second I said $143 he said yep, I can match that! Then I asked for 140 and he said ok. Maybe someone had already showed him the deal?
It's currently discount to $159 in store. Maybe I just got lucky with a good dude.

      • +1

Depends on their cost price as much as the competitors price.

  • Can Myer hurry up and update the status from Pending for my order šŸ˜” slackkkk

Harvey Norman have them in stock for $138 online + delivery (or click & collect I think). I ordered one last night.

    https://www.harveynorman.com.au/kobo-clara-hd-ereader.html

    • +1

Seems delivery only. $7.5 for me

      • +1

Thanks for clarifying. Yeah, I wasn't too sure on the in-store side as I was after delivery anyway and the extra $1.54 price difference between the original deal and this wasn't too bad.

    • +3

Thanks, just got it price matched with JB for $138. :)

      • No problems.
