I approve of this deal. it is nice to see 8565U in an Inspiron, and this is top class of Inspiron hardware (class 7000).

some serious processing power for the customer, and 16gb plus 512 SSD are very welcome.

    future proof.

      • +11

that is not correct. top of the class means great build quality and good screen.

also CPU is as powerful as i5-8300H, although is designed for lower TDP and will throttle sooner.

this is overkill for browsing and office, can be used for various workloads and will excel in photo editing for example.

Inspiron 3000 is entry level. latitude 3000 is also sort of entry level. Inspiron 7000 is top consumer class below XPS (and XPS is internally still coded as Inspiron 9000), so saying that all Inspiron is entry level is incorrect. Inspiron is consumer line.

Was $1299 with Ebay code recently https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/450462

      Different model and specs.

      • +1

        different how?

    • Correct. Title in this post shows typo for processor.

    https://www.notebookcheck.net/Dell-Inspiron-13-7380-Core-i7-…

detailed review of the same model, slightly different specs.

the only downside I see is battery size, it is a tad too small even for a 13 incher IMO.

if you want longer battery life and keep the portability you may look towards XPS 13 in dell outlet. will be a bit more expensive though. also latitude 13 but you will need to dig for a good deal, and many will have a worse screen.

  • I can't quite commit to buying because of the USB 3.1 Gen 1 port (not Gen 2) which means 5Gbps vs 10GBps, so I'm not sure if this would work with a WD15 dock. Would anyone have any advice on this area?

    • +1

to be honest I kind of gave up on the cutting edge docking because the standards for that are still evolving, feels like WIP to me, would someone prove me wrong? Thunderbolt this Thunderbolt that (X lanes or Z lanes), usb 3.x generation this generation that, I am not keen to attach anything to the thunderbolt 3 port in my machine except for usb drives until dust settles down a bit.

  • 3-Cell Battery, 38 Whr (Integrated) is the deal breaker. But these specs in an XPS 13 are another $1000, so decisions decisions…

    • +1

as an owner of a laptop with 92Wh battery I would say it's a point of concern, yes XPS would be better in this department, but the price tag.. check Dell outlet once in a while, plenty of XPS 13 models were there last night, $1400 and up.. after all not everyone needs this much processing power.

      • I attest to this… i have a 72Wh battery on mine… and not going to settle for less.

Hope a T480 deal comes up soon.

        • interested in a 92Wh Dell? pm me haha

    • I googled battery replacement and it looks very easy - not sure if that helps your decision. But yes pretty low battery performance.

  • Most who use this to its full extent would use it plugged. Wouldnt high pricessing chew up battery very fast regardless??

  • How good will something like this be for Adobe illustrator, Photoshop, browsing with like 50 tabs and 6 windows and never closing any applications? I'm on 2013 MacBook Pro and considering making the switch to windows because apple is too overpriced. Any recommendations? Battery is not my main concern because I use it mainly plugged in anyways.

    • +1

it should be fine, but if you use those heavily, look for machines with CPU with higher TDP (H or HQ) like i5-8300H for example. they will deliver more under constant workload and will throttle later than an U class CPU. this will come at the cost of portability most likely. there was a deal on Latitude 5491 on dell outlet couple of days ago but I can't remember the price. it is 14 inch, larger battery, i5-8300H and it's a Latitude, so 3 year warranty.

      • Thanks for your advice. Will take a look

My experience with Dell Laptops have not been good. We have them at work and they're just not nice to use. The biggest gripe I have with them is the fan noise. It spins up and doesn't let up even when the system isn't under load.

This model and work models exhibited. Bro bought this one and promptly returned it.

    • I had only one Inspiron and it was fanless haha so I can't say much about Inspiron.

on Latitude and XPS where powerful CPUs and GPUs reside it can get loud for a while, but quickly winds down when workload is reduced. I had a recent XPS and recent latitude and recent precision models and under office workloads they are almost silent.

what I can recommend in your case is:
      - check that you have latest bios
      - check that you have latest Dell power manager app and service (those are separate installations)
      - check that cooling profile in Dell power manager is set to Optimised or Quiet if the former is too loud for you.

      • Good points - the work laptops are completely locked down and my bro has since bought a Surface Pro 6.

Other than that - they're fine. Great specs on this one.

    • Yeah. I'm really hesitant to buy anything Dell because, all 4 companies I've worked for in my 10 years professional worklife all use Dell. Dell PC's, Dell monitors, Dell mice, Dell keyboards. Dell, Dell , Dell. I want something different for home.

This seems like a decent laptop though.

      • Specwise it is very decent and great value.

To live with is another story. Hopefully the latest BIOS revision can address my issues.

IMO XPS are better than all Inspirons. I bought 7000 series inspiron 2 in 1 last year in November (8 GB, 256 SSD, i5) but returned it back for a XPS: Same config but a tad higher price.

Very happy with the XPS. As soon as I turned that garbage Inspiron ON, it made my head spin because of constant loud fan noise for the first 15 minutes. They look good from the outside but definitely the cost cutting has been made when it comes to thermals and overall components used.

On the other hand, XPS is very quite apart from a bit of coil whine sometimes which is also not very prominent.

Not to forget the battery life of Inspirons are way way worse than that of XPS.

In my case, 4 hrs vs 12 hrs.

  • I have one if these albeit slightly older model. (december 18)

Battery is a deal breaker, its atrocious at the best of times. Lasts about 30 minutes watching video without being plugged in.

As others have said its also extremely loud when under duress. I'll be watching a lecture and the fan drowns out the teacher randomly. Wish id just paid extra for an XPS or an lenovo X1.

    • Good to see if XPS still has coil whine

  • +3

I bought this laptop last month from Dell's Outlet store. Paid $1,129 because it was in "As new" condition. Battery life of more than 5 hours is not an issue for me. Great machine. FWIW I could not be happier.

  • How does the build quality compare with an XPS?

  • The deal for the XPS 13's is back on:
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/450826

It says expired, but click the links and you'll see ebay has a new 20% off promo code, which brings the prices down to the same as the expired deal.

Super tempted to pull the trigger on the lower-end one…

    • actually good!

  • Is there a 15 inch version of this on sale? Cheers

  • Can someone help me with Shopback Australia? It is my first time to use it.

How should I use Shopback? I have registered in its website. In the Shopback website, I should just click on the "Active Cashback" to be redirected to the Dell website? And then search my item and buy it?
Is there any promo code or something I should enter?
How can I make sure that the Shopback procedure is working for my purchase?

    Thanks

Very close to buying the $1299 inspiron laptop but do guys think I should wait until tax time sales? Or will prices remain the same?

Good question! This is my question, too.
