I ordered a Seagate 10TB from a previous Amazon deal in Feb 2019.

I am still waiting for it to arrive.

I lodged an enquiry with Amazon who replied that they’re still sourcing stock.

Perhaps I should cancel and order this WD?

    • +2

It's quite possible oversold. Some early birds already got their dirves.

Just delivered. Pretty impressed with the order-to-delivered speed!

      • It was hard work shucking that drive. The Elements was a dreamboat in comparison.

    • My WD 10TB from the last deal arrived today, works fine https://i.imgur.com/n4Y0J3g.jpg

It wouldn't show up in windows, so I had to go into disk manager and give it a drive letter. Not sure if it's because of the exfat file system it comes with, or just my PC being weird. Would be interesting to know if others had this issue.

      • +1

Got my 2 today, no issues showed up instantly, currently scanning.

        • Really? You've got your already and mine says it's dispatching 15th of May.

Although to be honest I ordered it with something else as well, so not an apples to apples comparison.

          • @Azmunga: Mine said it was going to be delivered 30th April-3 May

And yet it turned up today…

Guess I shouldn't complain, except for the grumpy delivery guy who wondered why I wasn't home (was at work), so had to get left in a public place…

Typical Amazon behaviour with tech products lately:

That’s unfortunate. I ordered the same seagate one and it was shipped 2 days after ordered. Sorry to hear about your bad luck.

      • +2

        Lot of
        People waiting still I think.

        • +2

Same here. Waiting since end of Feb and it was coming mid April and then all of sudden, they changed the delivery info to waiting on supplier, with no ETA on a new postage date. I contacted them directly and they said there's nothing they can do…

    • +2

I'd cancel and order this… easily.

    • +1

Me too, waiting on 2 for 2 months now, expected delivery date is tomorrow but I can't see that happening as they haven't even shipped

      • +1

Got an email from Amazon saying delivery unknown as they still have no supply source for the Seagate 10tb after 2 months so I cancelled and ordered these ones

    • +1

Same. Still waiting. They are trying to put wait the orders. So I’m going to hold it.

    • Amazonprobably waiting for the prices to go down before sending that one out.

    • I was disappointed to miss the Seagate deal and have been wondering why it hasn't reappeared.

  • Will Officeworks price match?

    • You do get 10% off with Cashrewards at the moment?
Though with Officeworks you get the 5% off start away and the product that day.

      • No, No, No, Officejerks has the one with the Australian plug and will not price match. ([ie., $428] WDBWLG0100HBK-NESN vs WDBBKG0100HBK-AESN) So they can…
Miss out on $500 I just spent through Amazon AU…
A very BIG THANKS to O O for the post.

  • So will I need to get a Australian power supply?

    Thanks

    • i got two of these from Newegg on black friday and they came with US power supplies. I already had a suitable power supply for one and a travel power point adaptor for the other.

I've since shucked one and using it internally.

      • Guessingvits 5,200 rpm?

      • Did you need to do any modding to use it 'normally' or just plug SATA/power and go?

        • once powered up and connected to sata data, nothing special in configuration or formatting, if that is what you meant.

they have the 3.3v pin issue
          https://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-Fix-the-33V-Pin-Issu…
i used a molex to sata power cable which don't have the 3.3v wire. so i didn't have a problem.

i had not put any data on the shucked drive so I don't know for sure if existing data (written before shucking) would have been readable.

    • Only the pins are the problem. US pins are on this power supply. As per Amazon site:
"The transformer can accept Australian voltage and current but it is a US plug."

      • Thanks both for your replies. I think I might have some adapters around somewhere :) Will go for a rummage.

        • Get something like this for all your US PIN and other issues.
          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/419383 (imho)
Very few items in the world these days are made for the 110v AC only.
If an item comes direct from Amazon US it will state fairly clearly if it is only for 110v.

    • +3

you can contact WD support and they will send you out a new power supply with the switchable plugs for free.

Easiest to register the drive first

      • i did this just couple days ago, and they said it'll be with me in 2wks, which is pretty good service overall, i reckon.

  • Standard question..is it 'chuckable'?

    • +1

Should be, though I don't think they contain the helium filled drives anymore?

      • +4

They "do" in fact contain helium drives. I purchased two the last time and confirmed this using DriveDx on my Mac. They are easily shuckable and I even managed not to break any of the tabs on the second one I shucked. Here is what I wrote last time:

"Not shucked yet but one of mine is a WD100EMAZ-00WJTA0. Previous Reddit posts have this as a 256MB Cache - Helium - Made in Thailand. I can confirm it is Helium. YES!

Stats for one of my drives:

        Total Capacity : 10.0 TB (10,000,831,348,736 Bytes)
        Model : WDC WD100EMAZ-00WJTA0
        Form Factor : 3.5 inches
        Firmware Version : 83.H0A83
Drive Type : HDD 5400 rpm

        === IMPORTANT HEALTH INDICATORS ===
        ID NAME RAW VALUE STATUS
        5 Reallocated Sector Count 0 100% OK
22 Current Helium Gas Level 100 100% OK
197 Current Pending Sector Count 0 100% OK
198 Offline Uncorrectable Sector Count 0 100% OK
199 UDMA CRC Error Count 0 100% OK

Update. My second drive is the same. Yes!"

        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/441204#comment-7054728

PS They only came with US plug adaptors.

        • -1

But this is a 8TB, so is it the same WD White inside?

        • And so Helium drives are good for using in a NAS? Or should I just wait for a Seagate/WD Red deal?

          • +1

@Freighter: The logic is that they stay cooler so are preferred. I have two in my NAS and are going fine. No difference between how they perform and the Reds they replaced. Even the temperatures are about the same.

    • +3

      I think you mean shuckable.

      • Yes, I did:)

        • Aww, shucks

        • On the plus side, believe all drives (irrespective of model, brand, capacity) are "chuckable". May void warranty though if any issues arise :)

  • +1

Can anyone recommend an Australian plug that's not too bulky to use on powerboard and where to purchase please?

    • +1

Better off to buy a Xiaomi powerboard and be done with it.

    • +1

you can get WD australia to send you the AU plug for free - register it, then raise a support ticket. I did it couple days ago, i should have it in 2wks.

  • Does the shopback 6% apply to this? The T&C's say that you have to purchase on Amazon AU, and not US. Does this still count as an AU purchase even though the stock is US?

    • +1

Yes, as you're bought it through Amazon.com.au.

      • Thank you. Also just saw the Cashback button up top. I'm an idiot.

  • Got one from the last deal, grabbing two more now. very cheap helium drives, pitty my prime trial ran out yesterday.

  • I am reading the reviews and see this
    A bit concerning… :S
Would I get a HDD he returned? lol

    • +1

Here are some more horror stories.

      • I am going to put it in my NAS so reliability is a must, warranty would void…
but the price is so attractive…

        • Test them thoroughly before shucking. Full test takes about 16 hours.

          • @7hil: How?

            • +2

@haru: Use WD Data LifeGuard Diagnostics. Run a full test prior to shucking.

            • +2

              @haru: i used https://www.hdsentinel.com/

also this was my first time shucking. it was very easy, easier than the videos I watched, and I managed to do it non-destructively. If I ever had a problem I'd put the drive back in the shell for return.

of course if there was a problem a warranty return doesn't get your data back so make sure you have redundant backup copies.

    • That is a pretty unfair review though, he got one DOA - sometimes it happens. Dude didn't even look at the others. I guess if you're buying 18 external drives off amazon instead of a NAS for a business shouldn't expect too much, though.

  • Is the threadripper supposed to be server-grade CPU?

    • Not necessarily. Good for a machine learning setup if you wanna run 4 GPUs on all them lanes.

  • Does this auto sync new files from PC to the external drive automatically?

I have a Seagate 8TB but does a crappy job

    • If you're using the software that comes on the drive, you're doing it wrong. There are plenty of third party applications that would do a better job (eg. Syncback Free)

  • What's the difference between this one and WD My Book 10TB? This one doesn't have the WD Backup software right? What's the alternative? Thanks.

  • How suitable would this be to partition into 3 different partitions… using a section for plex / general, and the other two for network time machine backups? (it would be connected to a 2010 imac)

    Thanks!

  • what an absolute joke… I ordered 2 of the 10tb WD's… they shipped… tracked all the way to the country and then got returned to sender because they stuffed up the printing of my address! :(

only option I was given was a refund
