The P30 cannot do 50x optical zoom. There’s a big difference between optical zoom and digital zoom.

    • Huawei? It's 10x optical. This is 50x optical. Different laaaa

      • +1

        P30 Pro does 5x optical.

      • It does 10x "hybrid" which is a bit of a scummy way of saying 5x optical + 5x digital.

    Great zoom for erm ornithology…lol

  • Great spotting. What a great price for an entry level camera. I'm super tempted to get it.

  • How good it will be to record YouTube videos and video class?
    Thx in advance

    • 1080p@60fps for $259 is great

      • Thx how about the mic? I saw a video on YouTube saying it is not good because in bukt in mic. Couldn't find any further information

        • +2

not sure but as a general rule of thumb its best to get an external mic because the quality isnt that great on the camera.

        • It doesn't have a microphone jack. You'll need to record with external audio and sync it in post to get good audio. A much better option in a similar price range (used) is the Canon M series, M3 in particular you can get for $250 with kit lens used and it has a mic jack and is just a better video camera all around.

  • Read the list of Pros/Cons here before deciding https://cameradecision.com/review/Canon-PowerShot-SX540-HS

    • Thanks buddy, well worth the read.

      • TLDR summary ?

    • No RAW kills it.

      • I don't think people paying >$500 are going to care about RAW files.

        • +1

I would certainly care if I were to pay >$500.
Anyways this is one of those deliberate crippling of features to not cannibalize the more expensive brethren.

          • +1

@r0nmac: My bad, I used the wrong sign.

    • +1

      dead link ?

  • do people recommend extra batteries for this camera? if so, any reputable sellers?

This should only be considered if you think you have the need for a superzoom - and expect to shoot only static (or very slow moving and relatively still) objects in good to great lighting. This is a specialist/niche camera.

I would not recommend this as an everyday or travel camera; the wide angle performance is likely to be no better (or worse) than a flagship level phone from the last 2-3 years. The bulk and weight of this is also less than ideal. If you wanted a dedicated point and shoot with a decent zoom range (20-30x instead of the 50x here) and much more compact, look out for a wx500 or hx90v seconds from sony when the 20% off eBay sales are on. They are much smaller and lighter and costs about the same.

Having said all this, this is a great price for a 1200mm equivalent camera that will get you an image (eventually) at a extreme distance with a lot of patience.

  • Good price, but average performance

  • Anyone tried photographing jewellery with this? My P20 Pro has totally disappointed me, I bought it for the camera and focusing on close ups / aperture is absolutely terrible.

    • +1

You’re talking about product photography? Depends how good you want it to be…but if I was after a decent camera to take product photos, this wouldn’t be it. It does at least have a macro mode, which is what you need if you are after close shots.

      Don’t ignore your lighting though.

  • Thx guys I bought anyway waiting for the battr4change and see how ir goes for 260 bucks. Haha

  • Nice price, would it be much of an upgrade from a sx700hs?

  • OK price for run out model but it's hard to overlook no articulating screen, no touch screen and no viewfinder.

Good for moon shots and entry level birding…you'll definitely need a tripod for steady shots at 50x zoom.

  • Hi guys, is this a good upgrade from my Canon Powershot SX30 IS?
    Thanks!

Just bought A7r2 for 2000 au stock and saw this deal huge price difference

    • And a huge difference between the a7 and this deal, which is a really simplistic super-zoom. Besides, the a7 has a great range of available lens whereas this is a fixed system.

    • +2

You are talking gold leaf embossed toffee apples versus oranges - they arent even in the same league.

      https://cameradecision.com/review/Canon-PowerShot-SX540-HS 49/100

Superzooms have their place for some, but obviously also limitations because of the poorer picture quality in low light, less flexibility in taking shots at full zoom etc, but they are also generally a lot lighter and easier to carry than an SLR and a couple of lenses. Also cheaper.

      • +1

are you sure? From the score, seems like this one is not even as good as some mobile phone cameras.

        • Only buy this if you really need/want the zoom. It's a couple of years old with a very small sensor. Most modern phones will blow it out of the water where zoom is not a factor.

        • If you are taking a non zoomed in photo sure as soon as you touch the zoom button on your phone this camera beats it

      • Lool, nicely said.

    • +1

I just bought a car for 20k…that's different too

      • +2

I paid $4.50 for a coffee, you got ripped off

    • Honestly, if you can't tell the difference between the cameras you probably were ripped off.

You can fix it though: Learn to use the much better camera you own. Plenty of free material on the web and Youtube.

    • If you are disappointed now…wait till you try and zoom 1200mm with the a7r2 😂

  • +2

Is this the camera all the flat earthers use?

    • +4

      Only the poor flat-earthers.
The serious ones are upgrading their P900 to a P1000.

  • The extra megapixels and wifi in the newer Canon superzooms IMO aren't worth losing out the ability to shoot raw like with their older generation of superzoom cameras. Also CHDK doesn't work with the SX540 or other newer Canon cameras, so can't add timelapse or manual video shooting functionality to name a few.

Very happy I got this ~5 years ago, think I'd still prefer it over the SX540 as being able to shoot in raw and using CHDK to add timelapse function are still what keep me using it to this day as it's about the same footprint in my bag as a 100-300mm lens for m43 alone.

    • These things aren't really marketed to the crowd that shoot RAW and edit photos, it's more aimed at someone to wants to point their camera at something and take a photo that'll only ever end up on Facebook.

      • No that's a mobile phone you're thinking of. This is something in between. They're often called "bridging cameras" for that reason.

With the demise of point and shoots the manufacturers have decided to put all their features in more expensive bodies and have forgotten that this is often a stepping stone. They've started making cameras a lot more expensive again so we'll see if there's any resurgence in this sector. I am convinced the camera manufacturers are setting themselves up for a huge fall by attempting to lift the price point on entry level gear into the thousands not hundreds of dollars.

      • They have manual controls that a cheap happy point and shoot doesn't have, plus Canon's previous generations of superzooms could shoot in raw.

Maybe it's just because Nikon dropped raw from the P900 and P1000 (huge mistake IMO), but other brands like Sony, Panasonic and Fuji can still shoot in raw for their cheap bridge superzooms.

Like there's no real reason to not give the option to shoot in raw, it just makes the other options more attractive to those who want to get the most for their money.

  • Does anyone know if this can upload direct to a computer server via wifi?
I don't want to store any photos on camera itself.

  • Might go and pick one up. Seems like a good travel companion to cover what my phone camera can't.

In the <$300 range there doesn't seem to be anything better than this. Can anybody suggest anything?

    • +2

Picked one up today, thanks op

  • Was able to capture video of an ISS pass showing its overexposed shape quite clearly when pausing using a SX50HS which is also a 50x zoom Canon, albeit older, lower resolution and having a twist and flip screen. I'm sure similar would be doable with this. In case anyone is wondering what the heck legitimate use there is for 50x zoom.

Other than the twist and flip screen other downsides are no CHDK, and no official or unofficial way of getting RAW.

  • got one for the kids, was looking for a camera that they can use to learn while also having fun and this seems like the perfect combination. Has its limitations around low light photography and other areas (which i wanted so that they understand lighting needs better) but at the same time can be a lot of fun shooting outdoors with the macro and super zoom abilities and also manual modes :)

  • How would this compare with the Panasonic FZ80? I'm not into photography (but may down the track), just looking for a simple point and shoot. From a quick glance at the specs, it seems like FZ80 is better in most aspects (4K video vs 1080P, charging via USB, touchscreen, viewfinder, 60x zoom vs 50x, RAW format). Price is approx. $190 higher. Would it be a better buy than the SX540?
