Wow, great price for this. I have one and it's a very nice do it all camera.

Zoom is amazing, and very usable with the image stabilisation.

    • Hi

Would you consider this a bulky camera for travelling? Considering purchasing for upcoming trip to Europe.

      Thanks

      • I'm going to europe in a month. Trying to decide between:

        • Canon SX50
        • Sony A7
        • Olympus TG-820

Will probably take the Canon. It's not massive, but it is certainly not pocket size. Gives the best do-it-all flexibility for the size.

        • +1

A7??. A7 is a full frame camera and priced over 1k (RRP is 1900 for body only). So I dont think it will be good to compare with this one. But not a good size for a point and shoot camera.

If money is a factor, get a second hand Nex5n or so and you won't regret the quality.

        • @Gaggy: I should have been clearer, I own these, trying to decide which to take.

        • @ChickenTalon: Haha. That makes perfect sense now.
Go for A7 man. Take the small size zoom lens, may be any smaller APS E mount lens. You will love the :)

        • @Gaggy: There are no small sized zoom lenses unfortunately. I don't like the usable range on the kit lens for travelling, not wide enough at 28mm. There is a 24-70 but it's very expensive.

There is a ultrawide zoom lens on the Sony roadmap, but still not released. Still no good 3rd party lens options either. Very frustrating. Since purchasing the A7 I've hardly used it.

edit: this is the one i'm after 16-35mm f/4,0 FE Zeiss

        • @ChickenTalon: Yes and also the APS-C lens: "Sony 16-50mm Retractable Zoom Lens"

        • @Gaggy: Great range, but with APS-C cropping it's not really that good :(

        • @ChickenTalon: Better than most of the standard pictures. If you are doing in a day time 10 MP crop wont hurt. Worth a try as the APS C lenses are dirt cheap.

  • good camera

    • Hi

Would you consider this a bulky camera for travelling? Considering purchasing for upcoming trip to Europe.

      Thanks

      • It is pretty light and not that big. I carried it to New Zealand. Of course, with Canon sx700(30x zoom) you'll get more room in your pack.

Posted yesterday for $199. That's probably what I'd lean towards myself between the two. I have an SLR if I need something on the larger side, but I doubt I'd travel with it.

From memory the one downside for me with the SX700 is I'd prefer it if the GPS was built into the device rather than leveraging a smart phones. Some other manufacturers have the GPS on board. I'm sure it functions fine, but if I'm out and about visiting sites I'd prefer not to have other devices draining the phones battery. I'm travelling to Europe next year so I'm waiting until then to see what's on the market at the time.

        • @Smigit:
Yeah, would be great if SX700 had GPS built in. It is probably a battery saving measure (+ cost saving). It would have been really great if SX700 could support RAW out of the box. No CHDK for SX700 yet.

SX50… the only feature I really want that is missing is 1080p@60fps.

      • Much smaller than an SLR (not mirrorless), and plenty lighter, as it is an all plastic body. The zoom is wonderful and very useable.

        http://snapsort.com/compare/Canon-EOS-650D-vs-Canon-PowerSho…

That gives you a rough idea of dimensions versus a regular, excellent SLR. It's a cracking camera, and for $199 you can't go wrong.

So I've been looking at different sample videos of the video quality when at that >1000mm zoom and found this.

At least there's a novel way of using that zoom!

    • I think Youtube video convinced a lot of people to buy :-) Just a joke though!

To everyone looking at buying this simply because they need a camera (but dont know much about it):
It is simply the same internals as the most entry level Point and Shoot camera from Canon (Canon 1/2.3" image sensor). What makes this different is the mega zoom lens. The lens is very important, but a super long focal length almost ensures the lens will be slow and no very sharp.
Unless you get around in a wheelchair and cant walk closer to your subject, dont get this camera. Unless you are going on Safari and must have close up photos but somehow only have a budget of $200, dont get this camera.
Just because it is bigger than a Canon Ixus it doesnt mean its better, it simply has a big crappy zoom.

The Sony RX100 would give far far better results at maybe $350 and one quarter of the size, just no mega zoom…

Not trying to be harsh, take my words or leave the, im just trying to catch people so they can learn before they buy it.

    • +6

It's less than 200 bucks mate, that's less than half an RX100 (which I own). People won't be buying it expecting full frame quality.

There's heaps of videos on youtube showing the quality of the pictures and 1080/24p video at 1200mm with the stabilisation and it's pretty damn good.

To get this amount of detail on the moon using handheld is just amazing.
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rU5zVcCCDBc

It's a very good price for a superzoom with average picture quality. I'm picking one up just for the reach.

      • All im saying is only buy it for the reach, ive seen so many people lately buying these things cause they are bigger and look like they should take better photos. Of course the're not going to expect full frame performance, but some are expecting it to be a little better than one thirteenth of the image sensor performance/size.

My point for the $350 is that the RX100 is probably 4 times better at not "that much" more. There are other cheaper options.
But if all you need is mega zoom and have no money, thats why this model exists.

        Edit: Guys, relax.
If you take offence at this post then it wasnt meant for you.
Im simply trying to educate, im using extreme examples to stress a point.

        • +4

Where can you find an RX100 for $350 new? Cheapest I've found is $400 for a grey import.

Yeah I'm getting the SX50 just for the reach on sunny day. It's more like a set of 50x binoculars that can take videos and pictures for me.

What pushed me over from +1'ing the deal to actually buying one was the amount of detail it can resolve at full zoom. It's got some serious sleuthing capability.

        • +1

Dont worry Dan - i've bought one and i know you were only trying to help.

Like cars, phones and most products. Everyones going to have an opinion on it, often they differ. No biggie :)

For me personally. My GF is only using her phone as her main (and only camera). Buying this will blow her socks off.
I just hope i havent gone in too early for getting her a camera. Its for xmas and now i'm worried other deals will be around the corner…

The stress of OzBargains eh? :P

    • +3

A camera which is over double the price should give far far better results….
RX100 aussie stock is well over $400+

Unless you get around in a wheelchair and cant walk closer to your subject

unless you want to walk a km… the zoom on this is huge. It's not a few steps to take an equiv photo.

Does anyone know about CHDK, it suppose to add extra features to the SX50

    What is CHDK?
    ◾ Canon Hack Development Kit
◾ Temporary – No permanent changes are made to the camera.
◾ Experimental - No warranty. Read about the risks in the FAQ
◾ Free – free to use and modify, released under the GPL.

    Features
Professional control - RAW files, bracketing, full manual control over exposure, zebra mode, live histogram, grids, etc.
Motion detection - Trigger exposure in response to motion, fast enough to catch lightning.
USB remote - Simple DIY remote allows you to control your camera remotely.
Scripting - Control CHDK and camera features using uBASIC and Lua scripts. Enables time lapse, motion detection, advanced bracketing, and more.

    http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/CHDK

    • That's amazing!

I'm going to be picking mine up soon, and will be looking into it for sure.

Now if only it could add 50/60fps recording at 1080 then I would be even happier.

    • CHDK is a bit of a pain….got to load it everytime you want to use it and then you have to re-do all the settings.
does have some great pluses…..like the high bitrate video mode and raw photo.

I'm tempted to sell my SX40 for $150 and get this upgrade. If your remotely thinking of getting this, I'll tell you now even the SX40 zoom is incredible. You can see further than the naked eye and all the craters on the moon.

  • I have this one, love it!

  • Price showing as $299

  • -2

Passed this one up. Not sure if I should have or not. I have Nikon D90 DSLRs and the Canon SX20IS (about 3 models back, but uses AA batteries…ENELOOP hehe). Truth is I don't love the IQ - especially the noise - and it seems from reviews this one is as bad. But the price made me agonise nonetheless. I guess I need to hand in my Ozbargaineer badge. Truth be told I'm not sure if I'm going to regret it.

    • +1

Canon SX20IS doesn't even compare to my SX40 let alone the SX50. But if you have a D90, what's the point really.

      • -1

In what way does it not compare?

Both are superzooms from the same manufacturer and series. 20x (560mm equiv) vs 50x (1200mm equivalent). So SX50 gets roughly twice as close. (In fact I have an old closeup lens I acquired for nothing that is 2x, but the loss in quality isn't worth using it).

Both have terrible noise even at low and moderate ISO. This is the biggest issue. Yes it's to do with a tiny sensor.

2 advantages of the SX20IS are AA batteries (much prefer that) and ergonomics (haven't used the SX50 but there are complaints littered all over the net).

There's more to image quality than optical zoom.

The point over the D90 is that I have to crop big time. My longest lens is 300mm (450mm equivalent). So the SX50 would get in 2.6x as close. It also does better video than the D90 which was the first model with video (and no AF - hey it was released 2009). I love my D90, but at some point I will have to move up. Just trying to put it off because that camera is going to be 5-10 times the price - more if I don't stay with Nikon.

        • +2

The old SX20IS is nothing like this camera. Totally different sensor, IS and capabilities.

  • +3

Been playing round with mine the last day and have some first impressions after about 100 shots and a few movies.

    I'll start with the bad.

The picture quality is very average - it's never really pin sharp and there's a little bit of noise/artifacting in stills at the lowest ISOs at the widest zoom and brightest iris if you go looking for it.

There's a fair bit of fringing when shooting a subject against a bright background - possibly fixed with filters, and bloom can become a bit problematic too (again most likely fixable with filters).

Everything that was bad about the picture quality is even worse in video mode. The codec at the bitrate they use is horribly mushy. It's possibly the worst 720-1080 codec that I have ever used. There are gopro clones that give more detail. There are 480p youtube videos that look sharper and have more detail than this at 1080. The dynamic range is also pretty bad - shadows and highlights crushed and blown away well before I would have expected even for a tiny sensor camera.

On that - the youtube videos of the comparable superzooms from Sony (HX series) look much, much better. If long distance videography is something you care about I would hazard a guess to say that AVCHD at 700mm is going to get your as much if not more than this Canon.264 will at 1200mm. It's that bad :(

The video problems can't be fixed by using CHDK. Still stuck with low bitrate 24fps mush. What you see on youtube is pretty much what your gonna get out of the box, sadly. I was hoping some of the youtube artifacting was a result of dropping a 24p video on a 30p timeline (AFAIK youtube uploads will be server side transcoded to 25 and 30p depending on the source FPS and the 24p SX50 shots I thought would be been frameblended to 25 or 30p), but alas it's that bad when viewing 24p straight off the camera.

The body feels like it's made from recycled drinking straws - but all the doors and buttons are good. It's just the body feels like a cheap toy.

There's no auto sensing for the viewfinder - either flip the articulating LCD inwards or hit the display button to change between viewfinder and articulating screen.

I don't know why they bothered with a manual focus mode - it's pretty insensitive (takes a fair fewturns of the dial to work) and it's the dial on the back of the camera so it's awkward to use in a real life situation when you need to constantly change focus and then hit the shutter release. Maybe with time I will get better at being able to nail focus in manual mode with this camera - but for now it's just a novelty feature.

    The good.

It's got a 1200mm lens and the image stabilisation makes handheld shots at 1200mm at 1/50th shutter and faster possible! It actually gets detail on objects kilometres away. I can read the ohms of the transformer down the street from me using a handheld shot - it's pretty incredible. Honestly I didn't think this capability would have been had in a camera this small and at such a low price for years to come.

Focus speed is pretty quick for a cheap camera - it's a little hit and miss at 1200mm, but a lot more hit than miss even at the extreme.

Size and weight. It's smaller than the smallest of DSLRs but still larger than the small mirrorless cameras. It's about as imposing as a Nikon V1 with lens attached, maybe a little more.

The articulating LCD is bright, sturdy and fine for checking focus. The viewfinder works well enough but it suffers from rainbowing when you move your eyes - similar to a DLP.

Overall a very good buy at $200 for a superzoom with average picture quality.

    • are you getting clicking sounds in AUTO mode

      • The 'clicking' sound you are hearing is the autofocus tracking motor. Yes, my SX50 makes that sound when in full auto mode, sport mode, and when I select servo AF mode within the more manual setting modes. This is the same with a few other cameras I own as it's a function that the cameras can do rather than a problem noise.

It also reduces shutter lag by not having to focus the image before releasing the shutter after a button press - and by a significant amount too. Try putting your camera into PSAM and hitting the shutter button without a half press - you will find it's about 0.3s of shutter lag (as the camera will need to focus and then release the shutter) opposed to ~0.05s in auto mode or if pre focussing with a half shutter button press in PSAM. So a big difference.

If your camera is on auto, is locked down and your subject isn't moving then you won't hear any movements from the auto focus motor. If someone was to walk through the scene though - you will hear the clicks of the servo AF tracking that person through the frame.

You'll find that in the more manual modes and when you set the AF area to the standard 'flexi-zone' that you can still sometimes hear the clicks on a half shutter press - as it will try to lock on a subject more aggressively/faster once that shutter button is half pressed.
