  • I bought the a3500 at $288 recently, and this in comparison looks awesome

    • Edit: whoops.. Didn't realize there's a canon a3500 as well

      • FWIW

        sensor 23.5x15.6mm

so the Sony a3500 has a sensor about 13 times bigger than the Canons, but yes expect they meant the Canon…

I think he meant the Sony one. Market price is around $299 so it is not unrealistic to get one for $288.

Sony a3500 - changeable lens, much better sensor, EVF, full manual with RAW, way better low light performance.

Canon SX700 - cheaper, longer zoom lens out of the box (well, much easier with a smaller sensor), more powerful CPU, better video modes (1080p @60fps vs 1080p@24/25fps). A zoom with 700mm equiv. could come in handy.

        • @netsurfer: I meant the Sony.
          Price matched GG at JB:

          @netsurfer:

f/6.9 at max zoom on the SX700. You'd need a pretty bright day to be able to use 700mm handheld. Especially given you can't really increase the ISO with such a crap sensor

I reckon that class of super-zooms is purely for marketing purpose. Its pretty useless in realistic situations

        • @Thrawn:
Mate, Canon EF 800mm f/5.6L is very expensive and that's f/5.6. Sure, 6.9 is worse, but that's not even 1 f-stop difference. Though, honestly, DSLR high zoom telephoto lenses are way too heavy for me (well, I cannot afford one).

Not saying you should get a point and shoot. It is in fact at wide angle (e.g. 25mm or less, or at 50mm, that the f stop of the point and shoot simply cannot match the DSLR offering (e.g. f/1.2, f/1.4 or even the cheap Canon nifty 50 at f/1.8). If I really want a DSLR, I'd rather get a Canon or Nikon.

I am more interested in the 1080p 60fps video. < $200 for that is kinda tempting. The sample videos I saw are not too bad.

        • @netsurfer: You cannot do a correct comparison without taking into consideration the sensor size also. f2 on a small sensor doesn't equal f2 on a large sensor.

Smaller sensors = need more light.

However not everybody wants a DSLR or a M-DSLR. Some people just want a "dumb" camera, where they can just point a shoot.

Its like the differences between a "Non-Smart" TV and a "Smart" TV. haha

Why are we even comparing 2 different types of cameras?
Even though they might seem to be in the same price range, they really are not.
All you need to spend is $179 to use this camera to it full potential while the $300 for the Sony is only the first installment of what could potentially be a $x,000 camera.

        • lplau: Do you actually read my comments? I already mentioned APS-C sensor has way better low light performance in my first post. Also, you don't use telephoto's f value to show the difference. You normally see those big lenses at sports events during day time. You really need to know what those long range telephoto lenses are for (sports or wildlife or really shallow depth of field). Not for showing off f value.

As for saying APS-C DSLR having amazing / unreal low light, it is always better to get proper light source. 1 to 2 f-stops is not enough in many situation.

Canon SX700HS has full manual mode (manual mode is mandatory for me).

        • @Dealayed: Agreed. Kit lens for a Sony entry level DSLR isn't that impressive. Though, good price for the whole package I guess.

It is the lens that really matters.

  • Good price for this camera.

  • Thanks, got one.

Deal expired - discount code is no longer valid.

  • It was an excellent deal and when I saw it here yesterday I said damn.
Cause I got it a few days ago when it was posted on the ozbargain.
Anyway, it is one of Murphy's laws.

  • Thanks for posting!

Missed the additional $20 off but this has to be the best camera going around for sub $200. The best.

  • Sa, can you guys please recommend a compact camera (as in, thin-ish for my wife's handbag - not in DSLR shape) with a bigger sensor?

    • Perhaps Fuji X series (even the pros like them). However, they are pricey though.

    • rx100/rx100 mk ii / rx100 mk iii are all options. They have a 1" sensor so much smaller than some options but still much, much larger than your the average point and shoot. Much bigger than even the better point and shoots like the canon s120, nikon p340, etc.

I've got the original rx100 and it's fantastic. Got it for about $380 grey import during one of the eBay 20% sales a few months back. I am also happy with the video quality but I haven't really ever used video recording on other cameras so can't compare. It fits in my large pockets okay. It's very solid and also quite heavy for it's size. Optical zoom is only 3.2x on the mk1 and even lower on the newer model which is offset somewhat by the fact that you can generally crop more aggressively with the rx100 than other similar sized cameras.

Cheaper option would be something like the canon s120 with 1/1.7" sensors, but they are significantly smaller sensors than the rx100.

There are several with much larger sensors again than the rx100, but they are generally not pocket sized (would fit in her handbag though) but I haven't looked into them too much due to needing pocket sized cameras.
