This is the 8TB WD Elements External HDD. Not the lowest price but pretty close and way lower cost per GB than any internal or external hard drives in the local market(with this price being under 3c per GB). For those who missed out a few days ago, here's your chance. Free shipping with Prime

I've been tracking hard drive prices - other than the Seagate 10TBs, these are the cheapest per GB, and way cheaper than anything in the local market. Also, under 3 cents aussie per GB is already pretty good. I'd say its a pretty good bargain unless you need the 10 TB ones
Fair, and you're right - it's pretty close. I just said it as it's a rather easily searched item
I'll eat crow, my bad.
Can link me the 10TB I swear I compared the two the 8TB vs the 10TB and they were either the same or the 8TB was cheaper per gb.. I need to see this.
I think he maybe referring to the recent 10tb drives that Amazon AU had for $244 recently that sold very quickly
@Trantor: Thats the one - I somehow manage to miss it always
@bpop99: that's a seagate one though
is it SMR 10TB though?
@pinkybrain: The 10TB Seagate are not SMR and thats why its so popular (as opposed to the 6 and 8TB ones)
@Skinnerr Can you share a lower price? Thanks.
Do you know what speed is the disk inside?
Thanks. Its likely 5400 from what i gather on the net on this model
What’s the failure rate of these drives? All my external drive failed after a few year. I don’t even get to fill it up which is a good thing otherwise I would have lost everything.
I assume you’ve used Seagate?
It was Western Digital.
I have a 1TB external WD green drive from 2009/2010 that is still running. That said, it hasn't actually seen that much usage in the past years, and i took it out at that time to use as a secondary internal drive.
I've now put it together as part of a home NAS - and from what i gather on the reddit and other forums, drives usually either fail at the beginning or the end of their lives. To catch the former, you run stress / usage testing applications like Badblocks for a set period and if it fails, you know you've got a defective drive that you can return for a replacement.
Generally, if it passes that - it is expected to survive its average life span with failure rates then going up near the end of its life.
See: https://www.backblaze.com/blog/how-long-do-disk-drives-last/
@bpop99: This is (BB article) 6yrs old story, not sure how closely applicable to nowadays drives, given that technology has changed s lot
@chutibuti: They just released the latest stats.
https://www.backblaze.com/blog/hard-drive-stats-for-2018/
TLDR: go for HGST, although to be fair BB don't use WD disks anymore due to price.
@coxymla: Aren't HGST owned by WD now?
Hey! If you are storing some important files on drives I'd suggest looking into a multi-bay NAS with RAID capability for some redundancy :). You can build to adding in another external drive for a backup or a cloud backup service depending on your internet connection
shipping can take up to 3 weeks, still waiting on one from the last sale price.
Bought the last one on 6 Feb, received it this morning 14 Feb - 8 days for me.
And is it Air or helium white drive inside?
WD Element comes in helium white 90% of the time and all WD Mybook comes in helium white I heardNot shucking my drives.
I ordered the same date as you and it arrived this afternoon. Tracking info on the order says the eta is 22nd Feb, so maybe they under promise and over deliver.
Last hard drive I bought off amazon was ordered on the 4th, shipped on the 9th and received on the 17th.
Ordered Feb 8 and ETA is Feb 26th, but I used Prime Free shipping, so not sure if thats why.
I just received mine today 20th, so i guess the ETA on the website both amazon n australia post where incorrect.
If you're planning on shucking for NAS storage I would just spring the extra $10 and get an 8tb Ironwolf drive which is $232 on Amazon US
Could you send link please, are the iron wolf better than this drive?
Thanks
WD Elements 8TB is AU$220.
Seagate Ironwolf 8TB US$232, AU$334.Ah my bad. From past experiences I was under the impression Amazon always defaulted to AUD if you’re logged in.
ironwolf are noisy and hot. The wd red's in these drives are cool & not loud, but having said that the 10tb wd reds are even quieter. The extra heat of ironwolf may not be a problem but if you are in same room as drive the noise will be.
Is it confirmed they are WD Reds in these?
White label reds & most likely air drives rather than heliums. the 10tb are all heliums. I don't believe there's any reason to think the air version is worse although it must be cheaper to produce.
@bobvegas: I bought these exact 8tb drives from Amazon US a few weeks ago and got 5400rpm helium whites with 256mb cache.
@joeflacco: how do you know it is helium or normal air drive?
@pinkybrain: By looking at the model number of the drive.
Also, air drives have a hole in them to equalise pressure whereas helium drives are fully sealed.
@bobvegas: Air versions have higher power take and run hotter.
I got mine from the sale a few weeks ago ($215) - it arrived yesterday.
Mine turned out to be a white label air version, not helium. It runs hot, I started formatting it (in the enclosure) and it was hitting 59 degrees. I googled it and found this was typical for this model (being the air kind, not helium).
I stopped the format, let it cool, shucked it, put in my computer behind a case fan - and it's currently formatting and sitting on about 38 degrees (and idle about 33).
A bit more information… Apparently the new ones are a slowed-down Ultrastar DC HC300, which is very similar to WD Red.
how do you know it is helium or normal air drive?
so you shucked it from the elements case?
do you need to cover/remove the 3V pin to get it to read in the BIOS?what do you mean
new ones are a slowed-down Ultrastar DC HC300?Apparently the new ones are a slowed-down Ultrastar DC HC300, which is very similar to WD Red.
Yeah, citation needed.
I sincerely doubt HGST Ultrastar's have ever showed up in External HDDs.
Almost everyone who has shucked these has reported either WD Reds or WD Blues (depending on the model's capacity).
Edit: I found the reference you're referring to. They might be called Ultrastar's but they're not HGST, since WD is using the Ultrastar name for WD Red White Labels now. So essentially they are just WD Reds with unusual firmware.
No longer eligible for free prime shipping :(
Maybe they were getting rid of stock - it was under prime for quite some time. My suggestion is to try the Seagate ones if you want 8TB and don't mind them being SMR drives:

Bought 2 from this deal, shucked and got a WD80EMAZ white drives. Going to put into a DS218+ NAS as RAID1 mirrored drives and will update when it is up and running on performance.
