  • $639 at Kogan/Dick Smith + delivery. Good find if you prefer to buy in person though
EDIT: this deal is online only too

    • +12

Kogan/Dick Smith would be grey import.

      • Didn’t think about that. Thanks for the clarification

      • If the grey import is dual sim… Worth it?

  • Is this version 1 or 2

    • +4

V1 mate. I have updated the post for clarity. V2 retails for over $1200.

  • Can anyone that owns it comment if it's good or not? All the positive reviews on JB have been neg'd.

    • +8

I don't own the phone, but general consensus was it was a very good, maybe a little too pricey @ RRP, but this deal looks like a great price. Great speakers, amazing screen, very powerful. Go check Marques Brownlee's review on YouTube, he's a trusted reviewer.

      • +3

Marques is not a good reviewer. Go for Linus Tech tips.

I find linus doesn't do good reviews, it's more about entertainment and showiness than actual product reviews.

        • +1

Linus is hugely biased, he will chase views based on what is the current flavor of the month.

          • -4

@Whiltshire: Biased against who? Themselves? You're seriously blaming someone for maximising their profits by only reviewing trending items? Maybe try making your own videos full time and see how you go feeding your family with only videos that not many people are intetested in.

          • +2

@Whiltshire: That's not what biased means

            • -1

@deanylev: He's not wrong though. He has his preferential hardware that he will spruik more than others (IE, his love of Intel over AMD)

              • @Cyphar: Lol have you not seen how much he's been (rightfully) crapping on Intel lately and praising AMD. I swear he can't win, you have people criticising him from both sides.

                • +1

Lol have you not seen how much he's been (rightfully) crapping on Intel lately and praising AMD

Admittedly I stopped watching him because I got sick of his stuff.

I swear he can't win, you have people criticising him from both sides.

It's quite easy actually. Reviews should be unbiased. He also uses sensationalist titles. Look at his latest video: "Do Beats Headphones Still SUCK?". That insults all his fans who like Beats headphones. Beats don't suck. They never have. They were overpriced for what they are, but they are always good. His entire catalogue of videos are like this. He splits his fanbase just to create clickbait.

                  • -1

@Cyphar: He's admitted to using clickbait titles because they genuinely help a lot with YouTube revenue. Name some similar YouTubers that don't use clickbait titles? It's totally widespread now.

I definitely wouldn't say Beats were always good. The first generation were especially rough and to this day they are incredibly overpriced.

"That person isn't a good reviewer. You should instead go for this other person that isn't a good reviewer"

The only reason you recommended Linus is because he's entertaining. Forgetting the fact that he is insanely biased and will shill anything that tech companies throw at him.

        • Yep I stopped watching him. MKBHD uses good shots and hardware for his videos, but they're so basic and bland. Like he makes videos for those that have the intelligence of a 6 year old.

          • +1

@Trishool: The only reviewer I respect is Dave '2D' Lee. Guy is super knowledgeable and doesn't do YouTube for anything but a passion project. He has covered version 1 and 2 of these phones as well.

            • @Plasma: Dave Lee is absolutely excellent.

            • @Plasma: I've watched a few of his videos, his pretty good but heavily iOS/Apple biased.

              • @Trishool: That's most tech youtubers.

I don't like that he did a sponsored review for Dyson though.

First phone with a 120Hz display, I hear it makes it feel ultra smooth.

      • It does. At least on laptops. But it hurts battery life. I have to turn it to 60hz when not gaming.

    • +6

Sure it's great assuming you don't mind something as silly as a gaming phone with no headphone jack or aptx ensuring lag everytime you use headphones. Naturally Marques Brownlee never bought this up.

      • +13

"Gaming phone" means you've been played.

        • As long as it has Red LEDs (or Green in Razer's case), it's a Gaming product, period.

    • +4

Bought the phone at launch so a bit over a yer old. So far, pretty happy with it. it doesn't have the bells and whistles of my old Note phones (i still miss the stylus) but the 120hz screes is insanely smooth. Not a huge phone gamer so cant really comment on that, but even just scrolling websites it simply feels smoother.

Battery life is still solid. went from 4-6 hours of screentime new to a bit over 4 now, depending on what you're using it for (GPS nav will drain faster etc.). Build quality is great. It is a big honking block of aluminium and had survived all the abuse i've put it through, and i didn't bother with a case. Downside to this is that there's no wireless charging and NFC is a bit shonky (though this may be just my phone and not the alu).

My biggest gripe is the lack of software updates. Razer's pretty much just forgotten all about the RP1. The latest security patch is from July 2018 and i don't forsee Razer doing shit all to update it. It has to be said that i haven't felt the need to mess about with bootloaders and custom roms, yet. Everything works as far as i need it to. I know i will eventually put on a custom rom, if to achieve nothing other than to squeeze a few more months of life before upgrading.

In short; solid phone, a few quirks, but nothing too bad except for software updates.

    ‘Gaming Phone’. Aka, a Phone.

      nothing beats the Nokia N-Gage

      • Is it wrong that I want an emulator for it to play Travels?

        • +1

          yes, very wrong.

          original or nothing.

          • @[Deactivated]: Oh… I saw it on YouTube, the load times and fps looked terrible, are they?

            • @FabMan: i have no idea, i don't actually own one. lol.

              • @[Deactivated]: I feel betrayed!

                • +1

@FabMan: i have genuine memories of me watching other people playing them.

                  • @[Deactivated]: Mate in the UK has two N-Gages, with two copies of Travels, so I just now jokingly asked if I could have one and he is sending it in the post Wednesday. So now I can play video games on the go with the latest in mobile gaming technology!

    • +5

It's genius. Add LEDs, 50% price increase = gaming.

    • +15

Considering how much scrolling of the screen you do on a phone i'd say that's probably the main selling point of it.

        • +10

Yeah all those monitors over 60hz are just wasted lol

        • +22

Human eye is tuned for 60hz.

          No it isn't.

The only real usage of 120hz is maybe in VR applications for steroscopic 60hz.

          VR operates at 90Hz.

Are there even (non-VR) games that use more than 60hz on Android?

          Yes.

        • Can confirm. Am pro gamer l337.

        • Agreed, my phones 3x faster than my tablet. Guess which device I use for gaming.

      • That's right, we like ultra high latency Bluetooth for our mobile gaming needs.

      • Yeah, I have some low latency aptx bluetooth headphones I use with my current phone. Too bad the Razer phone doesn't support aptx the low latency bluetooth audio so your choice is really only USB-c audio here.

      • That is as far from the truth as you can possibly be.

No competitive gamer would use a wireless mouse or keyboard for instance.

    • No headphone jack? Game over.

  • +8

Wtf is a gaming phone? Blizzard is salivating

    • A phone designed with hardware that best supports mobile gaming at high framerates.

2 year old tech is getting expensive. I see there's a lot of stuff going for this phone but there's also a lot against it too. How well does it get supported? Is it on Android pie? And will it get future major Android versions?

    • +1

It’s 3rd party Android. So basically almost redundant after 12 months.

      • Nokia have been giving very good support to their Android phones

  • "Gaming".

  • But can it run Crysis?

    • At 60fps

  • With the RGB colour scheme chosen on its display screen this phone gets my seal of approval as a gaming phone

  • +2

Really don't understand how people play shooters on phones. It's a horrendous experience.

    • same feeling for console controllers

  • Still worth it ?

The 835 seems to be much outclassed by the 845 chip in every way.

    • The difference between the two chipsets is very noticeable in my opinion. And the SD 855 will begin shipping in phones starting next month so that makes the 835 even slower by broad comparison.

  • better have snake..

  • I heard this phone is good for candy crush. can anyone confirm?

  • +1

If you're into gaming & have the money I'd recommend the Asus ROG. Easily the best gaming experience around with some great added features.
