      Android 8.1

        Thanks 👍

  • One hit wonder like the essential phone.

    • +8

Not exactly, they have funding from their gaming peripheral and laptop.

    • +4

Lol.. except the "Essential phone" wasn't even a "Hit"..

      • +3

        whys everyone shitting on essential

it was a decent phone, good attempt at trying something different instead of cookie cutter iphone or samsung knockoffs

they released 3 years too late. but you want to encourage disruption as a consumer not discourage it

        • -3

That's the point. They market (along with Razer) as being like the king phone to own all phones out there. Yet, they were late to the market and all the other major brands have already overtaken them by the time they are out. Unless they have something really different that the market will immediately want, there is no way of causing "disruption" (LOL.. only a narcissistic marketing kiddy calls it that).
"Time to Market" is real and makes or breaks a model/company this way. Hence all the major players have very specific time frames for delivery in order to maintain their market share.

        • +1

@bchliu: the iphone "disrupted" the market. just because its misused by others, doesnt mean the term is narcissistic

in any case, i never got the impression from their marketing that they were trying to be the king, just trying to standout. I honestly thought the market was going to pivot to ceramic devices, cause Xiaomi soon followed Essential using it. But samsung and apple stuck to their glass and alumnium

In any case, the asus gaming phone, as gaudy as it is with RGB, has much better features than the Razer one

    • +1

How? Razer is a gigantic company with billions of dollars. Rumoured to be a sequel in Q4.

  • Are they making another one this year?

    • Yeah, rumoured for Q4.

      • I hope so, this was a great phone with 3 major flaws:
        - Screen was sucking too much power (very poor battery life)
        - Poor durability and ingress protection
        - No headphone jack and QuadDAC

If they fixed these major flaws, it would be a great phone today. And it would be one of, if not the best phone, if they refined it further (QSD 845, 5Ah, SAMOLED display, in-screen ultrasound fingerprint scanner, 85% Screen to Body due to smaller bezels on those incredible speakers).

None of this current trend of fragile rear-glass, pointlessly long 19.5:9 aspect ratios, annoying curved front panels, poor quality "DualCam" systems, fake AI gimmicks, smaller batteries, lack of microSD and Aux ports, and an invasive asymmetrical notch.

Seriously, guys, if you play games on a phone then you aren't a serious gamer because this guy doesn't play games on mobile phones and he identifies as a "serious" gamer.

      • +6

I am not even a gamer anymore but I used to game like 24/7 other than 3 meals and toilet breaks but cannot imagine throwing $899 on a phone to game but rather to spend it upgrading PCS or buying a proper gaming console with spare money left for another decent controller.

        • -2

899 not even enough to buy rtx2080ti nor the 144hz 4k monitor to output to

        • +3

          @qtvinsta: are you comparing a 5.7" screen to a 27" monitor?

        • @qtvinsta: hahahah got him

        • @TarquinOliverNimrod: no seriously, have you looked up the price of a similar 5.7" monitor if that costs $899?

        • PCS

How are you going to power your pc on the train?

        • +3

@whooah1979: If you were looking to spend around 1 grand on a "gaming all in one package", I'd pick up a dirty gaming laptop over a phone e.g https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/399914

        • +2

@McCree: he will then argue your laptop doesn't have a whole day battery. But the point is who wants to game on a 5.7" screen with 2 thumbs on the screen for a whole day? Anyway he probably is the niche market that Razer is targeting.

        • @McCree:

There is a $400 difference in cost and no ability to make and receive phone calls.

        • @whooah1979:

If your looking to splurge on a new piece of tech by razer I'm assuming your willing to pay the early adopter tax, so $400 is a drop in the ocean. Assuming you have a functioning phone you can use it to make calls?? Calls actually interrupt gaming if you are using on the go(4g connection) so having that feature is a downside in this gaming device. If you are not using on the go then why????

        • @McCree:

I’m not in the market for items like the razor. But if I were to play games on a train, in a park or at the airport then a I would consider a smartphone or iPad rather than a pc. Carrying a pc around for games is impractical.

        • What about if you game on the toilet…lol

        • @Jozimozi:

What about if when you game on the toilet.

      • +2

But aren't all mobile games free then you pay like $500 in game to upgrade a hat on your character?

        • That cracked me up.

      • Sarcasm? Must be. Invalid argument form, denying the antecedent.

    • +3

      xXRealGamerzXx

    • +1

      wtfnodeal is right.
Even a serious mobile gamer wouldn't use this.
      Comparing it to the OnePlus6….
      OP6 has bigger screen
OP6 has lower (but still acceptable) screen res = less pixels for the GPU to drive.
      OP6 has faster CPU
      OP6 has faster GPU

The higher refresh rate is a) a battery killer and b) pointless as no mobile game i know gets past 60FPS.

Oh… and the OP6 is several hundred $ cheaper.

  • -4

You know what is the new message from Razer? "Serious gamers buy their gadgets from us but hey they don't really need them because they can game on our new gaming phone touch screen anyway."

  • What games are there to play on this other than Fortnite? You'd need a decent controller too, something like a Dualshock and attachment. What can it do well that say a Samsung S8 cannot?

    • +5
      • 120Hz screen
      • Dual front facing speakers
      • Larger battery
      • +6

Does that help for gaming on Android? This isn't an attack on it, I just haven't seen any good games and I wouldn't mind some. I do puzzle ones and that don't need fancy things.

I just checked it out online, looks like a good phone, but I'd probably use it just like a phone. Wasted on me.

        • +13

The 120Hz screen would make everything (Animations, scrolling etc) a lot more smoother. Don't know if you've ever tried using a 144Hz monitor for gaming but the difference is night and day. It really depends on your use for the phone, the only game that I can think of off the top of my head to take advantage of the higher refresh rate is PUBG Mobile.

        • +1

@Emphasise: Yeah, I've used higher refresh rate monitors, and they are good like you said. The games I have played on mobiles I'm not sure would benefit significantly, puzzle games like Monument Valley, The Room or other puzzle like ones.

So mobile PUBG and Fortnite would be better on this, makes sense.

      • -6

Those don't really help a gamer perform better than a decent controller, a keyboard or a mouse.

        • +3

          Who's comparing it to that?

        • -6

          @Raynes: gamers

        • +1

          a keyboard or a mouse.

Carrying these items around on the train or a park is impractical.

    • -4

Finally I can see someone thinks the way I think.

    • +16

      What games

Android gaming is a festering pool of shit where almost everything is free with grinding, ad ridden, and designed to frustrate you into paying money to win.

There are quite a few good games still but finding them is another matter. Games that you know from other systems are easiest to find.

      • +6

        Diji1 makes a great point.
I think Android has more games that any other platform, and they are 99.9% shit.
Best games I've played are non android games via ports and emulators.

        • sooo…still playing on an android device tho?

  • +27

Friend has this phone, gotta say 120hz is nice, coming fromm 144hz monitor, its a well built phone, but someone needs to fire the genius who though it was a good idea to call this phone a gaming phone with no headphone jack lol.

    • +3

a gaming phone with no headphone jack lol

Oh wow - happy to stand corrected but it appears that Razer Phone uses bog standard Bluetooth.

This will mean an unavoidable audio lag while using Bluetooth which may or may not bother you.

      • +2

No latency with USB headphones or a dongle.

    • +3

You just killed the deal for me!
      (Thanks)

      • +5

No worries i just saved you 899 so you can spend it on something else on ozbargain

    • +1

check out the asus gaming phone

other than the gaudy RGB side of it. the specs and features are pretty sweet

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZyWX6CjJCIU

  • pocophone f1 has QS 845 and much cheaper

    • +9

This has 120hz screen, larger screen size and qhd, band 28 and nfc so diffeeent specs, not to mentiom australian warranty and support if you need

  • I think this is a miss as much as what is featured in it sounds nice but, will you really be using this for gaming all time?

  • -3

The funniest thing is.. it's already obsolete with the SD835 when there's plenty of SD845 and equivalent phones out there for similar prices with probably better specs. LOL.

    • +3

Five year old phones are not obsolete let alone this.

      • Five year old phones are obsolete for gaming, but this phone is fine

        • Meh, most mobile games run fine on my 5 year old phone. The only games where I think it would have trouble would be something like pubg but personally, I would rather watch paint dry than play a shooter on my phone.

  • Mobile games are the Donald Trump of the gaming world.

    • +5

So they're smart - smarter than anyone else, the greatest of all time … unbelievable, so , so great let me tell you … they said he was the highest quality person that's ever lived - ever, and this is just me but I agree, don't you? … Unbelievable let me tell you, that's what they said … they said "the elites". The elites! … what are they talking about, we're the elites, let me tell you! We got bigger boats, bigger buildings … we're the elites!

      • You know Donald Trump is an amazing guy. He's actually the President of the United States because he listened to me, Donald Trump. Tremendous guy.

    • You can play osrs on a phone

    • +1

The most popular form of gaming media, but also the most cancerous?

      • +2

Exactly. Also, seems to be aimed at kids a lot more and the IAP are everywhere. Also, playing on a phone is shit.

  • +4

    where are the RGB buttons

  • +2

Runs Mario Kart Double Dash (PAL version) at full speed.

  • The 120hz is nice but 90% of games don’t support it. Devs cap the refresh rate to stay compatible with all devices.

    • +1

The iPad pro has 120hz display, better resolution, is no doubt more powerful, and is likely to suffer rapid depreciation in value.

  • +2

It's trying to compete against the switch. These portable game phones never do that well, remember the Nokia N-gage and Sony gaming phones? Nothing wrong with the idea per se, but from a business perspective i'm pretty sure this won't take off.

    • -1

Couldn't agree more. Based on the history the demand on this type of gaming phones are too small that most phone companies just ignore them. Hope Razer has done its research that it is still sufficient to keep it alive.

    • check out the asus gaming phone

other than the gaudy RGB side of it. the specs and features are pretty sweet

  • Damn nice phone! I would buy if it was in my budget, 8GB RAM and 120HZ screen, 4000MAH battery, amazing stuff!

  • I guess compared to the $1700 Note 9, it's a cheap alternative.

… but 64GB on a 'gaming' device is sub-par. When fortnite is like 2GB and then multiple games are 2GB+ these days, you'll not have much of an experience.

    • microSD slot (up to 2TB)

      • +1

Android still doesn't see the microSD storage as a primary storage location.

  • +2

Apparently the USB Type-C headphone DAC is actually very good and can power high impedance headphones

  • +1

Candy rush crunch soda saga..will rock on this!!!! Lol

  • Anyone else remember the uber successful Nokia Ngage? A phone aimed at gaming…

    • +1

What you talking about? The N-taco was mobile gaming personified.

      /s

      • At the time, I remember thinking it might revolutionise gaming.

  • +1

Also has Qualcomm Quick Charge 4+ so it'll recharge very quickly ;)

  • What android games would you play on a hi spec phone like this anyways??

    • PUBG, Fortnite.

  • Review saying the camera is a bit meh, maybe pure gamers don't care about camera quality?

  • Save up for the Asus ROG Phone, its much better then this for emulation

  • Snapdragon 835 ?

What rubbish…. 845 is far better for gaming

    Seriously

    • +5

Razer phone was released overseas in November 2017 and SD845 was announced on December 2017. That's why.

  • +1

Razer is a trash brand, I wouldn't own this if they paid me $1000.

    • This phone is actually good though.

      • -1

It could be the most revolutionary phone to ever exist, razer is a trash brand and I will never buy their sub standard crap again, their brand ruined this phone, the many of razer customers hate their products, regardless of genre, they think they are trash and after having their bad experience, me included, vowed never to buy from them again. This phone is a gimmick, nothing more, an over priced one at that, even on sale.

        • Fair enough. But when they make good products you have to give them credit. Regardless of your stance on them as a company

        • @WinstonWithAY: That's it though they don't make good products, a majority of their peripherals die in 6-12 months of average use, their warranties, if you actually read them, don't cover many problems, I don't see why their phone business would be any different, the only way I would give them credit for anything is if they were actually truthful in what they do, but they hide behind bullsh!t and that is not a way to run a company, maybe they've changed since my incident, but once a company screws me they're dead to me, that's all it takes, especially in the ridiculous over priced "gaming peripheral" market that razer dwells in.

        • @D-Grant:

a majority of their peripherals die in 6-12 months of average use,

What do you base this statistic on?
