  • Do you get 30 or just 8 go when you port?

    • +1

      30

      • 22GB Data Bank bonus on your
        first five recharges.

So basically activation ( porting ) + first recharge is included in $8…

        • +3

Yep. I ported to Telstra on 1 December and received the 22GB bonus.

  • Thanks OP, offer says limit of 2 per customer, couldn't actually find where you could request 2 so ordered 1 and will try repeating. Good deal, Telstra's been a bit mean of late.

    • Yeah I saw that. I wasn't able to add two to cart on mobile, maybe desktop works.

      • +2

Just tried on desktop and couldn't find a way to get more than one in a single transaction.

This is the cheapest way for people to access AFL/NRL/A-League streaming. Telstra offers this streaming for free for all post-paid mobile customers, and all prepaid mobile customers (who have $30 credit or more).

All you have to do is buy one of these $30 starter kits when they’re on sale like they are now, and activate the SIM on a long expiry option just prior to the start of the season of the sport you want to watch. The $30 activation credit lasts for 6 months, which should cover the entirety of the season (or just about).

The downside to this is that you can’t watch the streams on anything larger than 7 inches (give or take an inch), but there are workarounds (for the AFL at least) if you use KODI. Having said that, $8 for the season sure beats $30-$60/month on Foxtel or $25-$35/m for Kayo (still only as cheap as ~$12/m if sharing an acccount), despite the fact that the more expensive options offer other channels.

    • just connect your phone via MHL to tv?

      • Could you please explain what this means? I'm trying to work out how I can use data from my phone (assuming unlimited phone data to watch afl etc) on my TV. Is this possible?

        • +2

          iphone or android

most android phones you can just buy a cheap usb to Hdmi MHL cable off ebay and basically mirror your phone screen on your tv

dunno what app you guys are using to stream the actual game but theres all sorts of screen mirroring apps and casting functionality in android

          • @furythree: For me the app refuses to play anything when it sees mirroring is enabled - MHL and wireless mirroring. Only debug mirroring was not noticed for me.

      • AFL games on the are restricted to 7” viewing
        Even if mirroring

        • how do they do that

          • @furythree: Don't know the technicalities but I'm assuming it is to do with streaming the video output to 480p

          • +1

@furythree: I've tried absolutely everything to get around this, including installing the apk on my android tv…. it ended up playing a small 7 inch screen on my 75 inch tv! really annoying!
I'm on Kayo now…. couldn't be bother dicking around with this anymore.

            • @maddoglee: Even if you could stretch out the image, it would be unwatchable (As per my cousin has done on his 75" TV)

              • @Danstar: I watch the AFL Live stream on a 1080p 55" TV. It's definitely watchable with good internet.

                • @sween64: Via the AFL App ? And a live AFL match ? And was it decent quality ? (NB: We tried this few years ago)

                  • +1

@Danstar: Live isn't as good as replays. Yes using the stream that the app uses but via Kodi. 2018 quality was definitely better than 2017.

                    • @sween64: Yeh, I remember reading that replays are better quality, but live is streamed in low resolution

    • Yep, have done this the last 2 years, just bought one to do it again.

    • +1

FYI. You can use up all your credit and still have access for the full year. For the last 2 years, I have activated the Live Pass Jan/Feb when they announce it's open and it expired Jan/Feb the following year and worked the whole time. One year the sim expired Oct and Live Pass was still active.

    • Wonderful! Looks like Formula One is not included. Would be great if it does.

  • +2

Since they gave up the Google play thing, these aren't nearly in demand as they once were. Good for cheap data if you're out in the sticks.

    • Good for cheap data if you're out in the sticks.

Thats what I was thinking to get 1 for. Travelling soon on road trip in my campervan, so would be handy because Telstra does work in a lot of rural areas where other networks dont have decent coverage.

  • +1

These were 5 bucks a few weeks back. Not a bad deal just for 8GB let alone the bonus 22GB if you activate before 25th Feb.

  • Can prepaid credit be used to pay for Netflix?

  • +4

7.60 at office works ( not a bargain but just in case if someone is looking for cheapest)

    • +1

Yes, but going to officeworks instead of checking Ozbargain might mean you lose a lot more than 40c

      • but going to officeworks instead of checking Ozbargain might mean you lose a lot more than 40c

How so? Do you mean in terms of petrol, time, public transport costs?

        • That, unless you are passing right by it, plus while driving you can't check Ozbargain if you are single, driving alone. So by the time you do all the logistics, you may be better off just sitting and scrolling through Ozbargain. But since you are illuminati you should know that, as well as a professional Ozbargainer 👌

          • @bargainparker:

But since you are illuminati you should know that, as well as a professional Ozbargainer 👌

LOL uh this part was so unnecessary but ok! Got it! Haha.

  • Thanks! Ordered 2

  • +1

    ordered 2 times, thanks OP

  • To confirm, you don't need to port?
    $8, spark up a new number by 25th Feb = 30Gb right?

    • +2

      Correct. See: "activate"

      • +1

Cool, some of the talk about porting made me think I was missing somewhere where it said you had to port in to get it.

  • +1

I wonder what would happen after 25 Feb 2019. Would telstra be generous and offer 22gb of bonus data after that date.
I have a dozen of these $30 pre paid sim and I am using them to power my home internet since I don't have NBN in my area yet.

    • Probably. Depends on the market at the time.

    • Same here. NBN has been due every month for 7 month. Still at least 4 months to go.

Each month is a search for a data SIM!

  • $8 for 8Gb, then you need to recharge $30+ five times before you get 22Gb Bonus ?

    • +2

No. 22GB upon activation. So $8 for 30GB.
Another 30GB each month for the next four recharges.
Telstra treat an activation as a recharge when using a $30 kit.

      • But that 30gb expires in 30 days?

        • +2

No. 8GB will have a 28 day expiry but will be banked if you recharge $30 or more on Pre Paid Max.

The 22GB will already be in the data bank and is accessible whilst you have active recharge credit.

  • OP ur swee(t)n64. Right time when i was feeling low on missing beelong deal yesterday

  • +1

    Thanks OP.

I don't need one, but got one anyway.

  • -2

    when sim expire?

    • Please read the OP

    • just got mine, says 09 Dec 2020

  • Does anyone know what's the minimum amount for recharge on subsequent months to get the extra 22gb each month ?

    • $30

  • Hey Op, what do you mean by ‘Likely expiry date of kit….’?
Do you mean; you can still activate after the 25th of Feb 2019 but you won’t be able to take advantage of the extra 22gb?

    • +1

Correct. The extra 22GB is a promo that currently expires on 25 Feb. After that you will likely receive 8GB and may or may not receive any other bonuses.

Starter Kits have an expiry date. The one I bought at Coles this week has an expiry date in 2020. I assume the stock from Telstra will be similar.

      • +1

Can confirm the expiry is 2020, ordered mine this morning and just arrived now, might order another as well.

  • If auto recharge is setup, is it 28 day expiry till the next auto recharge or the nominated day each month? (so 30/31 day expiry)

    • +4

Scheduled recharge is 31 days. Ie you nominate the day.

  • How does one inactivate the auto recharge?

    • Telstra My Account

      • Boost doesn't issue invoice for recharge.

Does Telstra automatically issue tax invoice for every recharge like aldi ?

  • What is the delivery time for metro Melbourne and can you pick up this deal instore/ at Woolworths/ Coles?

    • +10

Available in Telstra Stores from Jan 22nd until Feb 10th at the discounted $8 price 👌🏻

      • What about $40 starter kit ?

      • Yer but has to be activated…… such bs. I went in earlier then the 22nd to try and see if i could get lucky and they declined, fair enough. Then I went in on the 22nd and after about 20 minutes of messing around only to be told it had to be activated on the spot…

      • Just tried Box Hill Telstra store and they said it was only online. Will try a CBD store

        • Maybe it is Telstra owned stores only.

    • Can price match at Officeworks.

      • As stated a few posts above, $7.60 at OW

  • Sweet! Unlocking Telstra Essential Plus for $8.

  • -1

Telstra is really an** with delivery. Must sign for or they take a photo of your ID BS

    • Why are you so angry?

      • +1

I don't know dingdong's reason but my AusPost contractor won't come down our driveway and delivers parcels to the PO further away rather than the one we have a PO Box at 5 minutes from our home. No, Telstra won't deliver to PO Boxes. Inconvenience x 3. :(

      • I'm not even angry. I'm just warning people Telstra can be pain in the a$* to deal with in my experience when they deliver. They wanted to take a photo of my ID + signature when I ordered the Free $2 sim before. Even had someone emailing/calling me that they must do this. Found this very unnecessary.

  • So what will $30 get me if I activate after 25 Feb?

    • At least 8GB maybe more.

  • Sorry but I'm still confused. I wanted to use it for extra data in order to use mobile internet on my computer via hot spot.

So what is expiry for this? Someone mentioned can put as 6 months. In that case this $10 gives me 6 months expiry and use 30 GB in that time?

    • +2

To get the bonus 22GB you need to activate on Pre Paid Max. 22GB will be in the data bank and 8GB will have a 28 day expiry. To move the 8GB (or whatever is left after 28 days) in to the data bank you need to recharge $30 on Pre Paid Max.

You can later change offers to Long Life Plus and recharge $30 for a 6 month expiry of recharge credit. You can use the data bank while you have active recharge credit.

      • +1

Wait, changing pre-paid plan to long life doesn't lose the data bank? If so, that's awesome.

Start with Pre Paid Max for $8. Use up 8GB for first 28 days, recharge to Long life Plus using $30. Have 22 GB left for 6 months right?

Total cost of $38 for almost 7 months, 8GB first month, 22GB for 6 months of emergencies, AFL/NRL access, Telstra Air, etc. Sounds decent. Is this right?

(Last time I was on Telstra prepaid for a month I got 100GB OneDrive storage too)

        • +2

Yes. Data Bank is always there. Change offers to Long Life Plus before recharging $30 to receive a 6 month expiry on your recharge credit. You can also move back to Pre Paid Max and use the $30 recharge you paid on LL+ to purchase data that goes directly to your data bank. $10 = 1GB, $20 = 2.5GB. So that's another 3.5GB in the bank.
Note: there's a maximum of 10 pre paid offer changes per year.

          • @sween64: OK, good advice about changing offers before the $30 recharge. Switching back to Pre Paid Max after recharging on long life: Does it change the expiry back to 28 days?

I just read something that indicated the data bank might disappear when changing offers. Copy Paste from "Things you need to know" …
"Telstra Pre-Paid Max: Data Bank bonus available to customers who activate or change to Telstra Pre-Paid Max from 23 November 2018. Your unused Data Bank data does not expire unless you switch to another offer. "

            New Rules?

            • +1

@Iceman82: Recharge credit expiry never drops back.

I haven't done it myself but I've been told Data Bank carries between offers. There's much discussion regarding this on whirlpool.

              • +1

@sween64: @sween64 Wow, if this works, that's great. I don't have a 4GX (Band 28 phone) and my holiday home needs a Band 28 device to work properly there. I bought a Telstra 4GX MiFi (of course based on the offer from Ozbargain) to use down there. Used about 8GB of the bonus 15GB (expires mid Feb) on that initial MiFi purchase and was trying to work the cheapest way to get access in March and May.

Figured at worst 2 X $8 (30GB) from this offer was the cheapest way for my next couple of planned stays, just activate one just before going down each time. Heck if I get 8GB and the additional data's offers not on then doesn't matter. If I can use one of these SIMs in the Mifi and activate in March, then change to long life with 22GB in the data bank for the stay in late May, that'd be great. Then covers me for future unplanned stays in the next 6 months and leaves me an unactivated sim for later in the year!

              • @sween64: I'm honestly not sure about this. It says "Your unused Data Bank data does not expire unless you switch to another offer.", so I'll probably just get 2 sims, and hold them, activate one now to get access to Telstra Air for 6 months, then in 6 months activate the other one. Honestly with the amount of data deals from places like Kogan (case in point this Kogan one -> https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/kogan-mobile-prepaid-voucher-co…) and other more recent ones (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/432849), Data is not really an issue for me :D

                • @Zazer: From other's experience it doesn't behave like that.

  • +1

If I purchase it on my phone, I get the option of same day delivery. Nice

    • Purchased on PC and also got same day delivery! Very happy :)

  • Can I use a second starter pack to re-charge? Will it take time to port from Aldi?

    • +1
      • No.
      • Port in business hours and it should be done in less than 30 minutes.
  • It says first recharge has to happen by Feb 25, not activate by Feb 25, in order to get the bonus data. So presumably you'd need to activate the SIM on About Jan 28 in order to do the next recharge 28 days later, on Feb 25.

    • +3

This starter pack already comes with a $30 recharge preloaded, that means it's counted as a first recharge.

      • Ahhh good to know. I'm contracted until March 16th so technically I can port after Feb 16. Probably worth losing a few weeks of access on my current plan in order to get the extra data in this promo.

  • +4

Just a Thanks @Sween64, thank you for all the responses through this thread, I'm now a wiser person for it.

    • +3

      No worries, you're welcome.

  • So, I'm out of the country but I ordered this. Now it's saying that I'll need valid ID to show the delivery person. Does it have to be me? Can it be one of my family members? If it has to be me, there's no way if can…

This is stupid. How is it any different to when you buy a sim at a supermarket? You don't have enough to show ID there.

    • +2

I didn't need to show a valid ID, though I did need to sign, but they don't really compare your signature. And you wouldn't expect to go to a home to deliver something and expect it is a thief and not the owner or family who live there.

    • Even no one is home to receive it then it'll go to your local PO for collection.
