doh, i just recontracted on a sim only 80gb for $41.25 deal …..i could have learnt to live with less data and gotten an iphone for a few dollars more :-(

but then who wants 24 math lock in with 5g models coming out this year.

    • If it's Sim only plan they usually waive the cancellation fee.

      • Min. total cost $1,416 over 24mths. New services only. Excludes trade up customers. Ends 31/03/19, unless withdrawn earlier.

    • +2

And how long is it going to be before a widespread 5g network comes out in Australia?

      • +4

Telstra are initially getting exclusive access to the 5G handsets from some of the big manufacturers and Apple said they in no rush to produce a 5G phone so I wouldn’t worry too much about that.

        • Yes but that’s not widespread. It’ll be confined to the CBD mostly in terms of coverage for a while.

    • How much more expensive is 5G is going to be compared to is yet to be seen. For early adopters is not going to be cheap.

      • It won't be much different. For mobiles 5g will involve costly handset and have sporadic 5g reception. Most don't need more than 100gb on a mobile. 5g initially will probably target mobile broadband used in homes instead of NBN.

        • I'm just thinking back to when 4G was introduced, from what I remember, most telco's were charging a premium to be on 4G, and the price difference wasn't minimal either. I dont expect the introduction of 5G to be any different. Higher speeds and being only a limited number of people on that network will invoke a premium without a doubt.

    • That's why Optus are going big on data and offers right now. Lock in customers until Optus is able to provide a 5g service

    • +11

Maybe I'm in the minority but with 100Mbps downloads on LTE I can do everything I want on a phone.

    • +1

Do not fall for the 5g marketing crap. It will not be commonplace until 2025 I reckon. The tech needs to be saturated around town for anyone to get any real world use of it.

      • Australia is also a couple of years behind other high income countries. I suspect you're right with the 2025 prediction.

Is the Pixel 3 XL still a disappointment?

Some reviews show the Huawei Mate 20 Pro is the top camera phone now?

MKBHD Just dropped the Pixel 3 XL as his daily driver in favor of the Mate 20 Pro.

    • +1

Would like to know too. Tossing between S9 or pixel 3.

    • +1

      Still the best camera

But I can see why he picked the mate 20 pro with its ridiculously long battery life

    • +2

Mate 20 pro have the better camera and more processing power for the pictures because of the Kirin 980 which is currently more powerful than pixel 3's Snapdragon 845.

But pixel 3's picture software processing is no joke. Even with a weaker CPU, the pictures still come out amazing. But that is the only good point along with having pure android.

      • +3

Hey, have had the Pixel 3 since December and have had no issues with it. I keep seeing the same arguments online about which phone is better and a lot of bad reviews on the Pixel 3 but at the end of the day the apps I use aren't made by Google like Messenger and Instagram so as long as the phone isnt slow I really don't have any issues. If you are someone who is in the Apple ecosystem then stick to Apple but if not Google, Samsung, and Huawei all make great phones.

bottom line is that picking a phone is a personal choice based on what YOU need it for and YOUR lifestyle. So just go with that and I doubt you will make the wrong choice.

Hope this somewhat helps to making a decision :)

    • Don’t worry about MKBHD mate that’s his bread and butter.

      • he's heavily biased towards pixel…too much it sounded fake.

    • +15

The guy changes his daily driver daily.

    • +2

I remember him dropping pixel 3 XL for one plus 6T and he had mate 20 pro while shooting what's inside my bag with Verge only because it was on review period, at least that's what I believe. But mate if it's for camera, pixel 3/ XL is unbeatable till this point.

    • +1

the giant notch is a deal breaker for many.

    • +2

Pixel 3XL owner here, switched from Samsung Galaxy Note 8 in November 2018.

I've owned the phone for 3 months now and it's been fantastic so far. My only real complaint is that the battery life is pretty crappy, but just enough to get you through the day with heavy use.

I bought a pixel stand, which is the wireless charger dock, and that's been a real game changer too. It's like having a Google home, a photo slideshow frame and an alarm clock all in one. Quite expensive, but it's really enhanced the phone experience for me.

The notch really isn't as bad as people make it out to be. I stopped noticing it after the first day I got my phone.

I would recommend the Pixel 3XL any day of the week, it's a fantastic phone.

      • May I ask about the Google Pixel stand? How do you configure the settings? Mine currently is just used as a wireless charger for end of nights.. and it drives me insane with its 'always on' display. Admittedly I haven't tried changing anything. Felt the only way to make changes to its settings is to do it while the phone is docked (felt awkward).

        • +2

Settings > Connected devices/previously connected devices > pixel stand > then choose screen off when dark. That should do the trick. You can also change all other settings for the stand there.

      • Great summary - also have one, camera is hands down better than the mate 20 pro, battery life is meh but I am yet to find a situation where I have had to be desperately managing use.

    • I'd personally take the pixel as I prefer the clean Android and frequent updates, and I somewhat don't like the Chinese government spying on me =p

The wide angle selfie seems like a good idea for those that take selfies.

The biggest annoyance for me is the lack of lossless zoom…but honestly I never zoom in on a phone anyway (possibly because I can't currently?)

Glad that mobile plan prices going down. I still remember 2015 for iphone6s 64gb I was paying around $80 and just 3gb data

    • Same here, 2016 contract paying $65 for 4GB with Samsung S8 Plus.

      • 2017 april, many people got the s8 plus from Woolworths mobile.

        • yes 2017 it was, couldn't recall the exact month and year my bad.

    • I remember paying $79 p/m with Vodafone for $300 worth of calls/sms and zero data (around 2005)…lol

    • It was a painful moment with my Vodafone contract with iPhone 6s Plus 64Gb $98/3Gb for my miss since Oct 2015.
Remember I was a nerd that time, so Vodafone is a big NO for me (forever).

  • 8 Plus is $5 more a month than last years offer but with 10gb more data.

    • 10Gb data (more) is normal for the recent development of 4G. So basically, $5 more (expensive)

Does Optus issue a tax invoice for the full price of the phone with contracts? For TRS?

    • no, shipping invoice only shows unit shipped.. your account monthly billing will get the phone installment ontop of the plan

  • +3

    Delete, stupid question

  • Wasnt the mate 20 pro $84 p.m with 100 gigs? That was a better deal

    • +1

It was last night I checked. It was one of those special offers so I guess it just ended.

But $75 for the Mate20 Pro 128Gb is not bad if you can put up with 4Gb or data or data pool it with another Optus service. $1,800 less the phone cost of around $1,500 you end up with $12.50/month for the plan.

      • But $75 for the Mate20 Pro 128Gb is not bad

It's $74 on this plan for 30Gb of data, and if the HN 10% discount applies that makes it $66.60/month.

        • Yes you are right cos i missed the special extra data for $1 less and also a freebud. Will be dropping by the Optus store tomorrow and hope to get a couple of things confirmed before we add this to the bundle.

We need to data share or include the entertainment extras. Do you know if HN can do those?

          • @DarkOz: Afraid I don't.

Though I think that's all part of the basic Optus service.

I'll be trying to get to a store tomorrow if I decide the Mate 20 Pro is in budget.

            • @Xenocaust: I got the mate 20 pro with the previous optus deal.. wasn't worth it. The screen touch lag is a deal breaker.. plus feels plasticky and not premium. Returned the phone "sealed" :)

  • +2

Wow Pixel 3 for $59/month is pretty great value.

Wonder if Telstra has any plans on matching soon, their best pixel 3 price ATM is $69 (with a $10 port in bonus) for only 8GB.

    • Definitely to sell, then buy another phone. They are still retaining their value quite well.

  • +1

Says 30GB DATA New services only even when you select I'm with Optus?

    • Yes I had chat with their Sales representative, she confirmed it is only available for new services not for upgrade. :-(

      • Aaaaaaahhhh NUTS!!!

      • Correct me if I'm wrong, but as an existing customer, if you need 2 Optus services to get that offer, isn't it better to get the $41.5/80gb + $15/3GB SIMs and then buy the device upfront?

      • go and talk/chat with the billing team. they will do for u without cancellation fees

  • +7

Harvey Norman has 10% off plans for new customers

    • Can HN 10% off stack on this promotion? it's better then.

    • Is this on the website or in-store?

      • +2

in-store just go in & ask, they also throw in case & tempered screen at times just ask.. unless these plans are excluded should have no issue

        • +1

Thanks. Maybe drop in this Arvo.

        • +9

Did exactly this, asked for case and guard, first sales person goes of course, then second one goes no can do. Then the Optus guy who was there goes fine I'll double your data. So $53/m with 60gb data.

This was at the Campelltown store if anyone else wants to try their luck.

          • @zorrt: That sounds amazing, my Samsung s7 battery is just hopeless since the Andriod 8.0 upgrade and I've just came out of contract. Also I ported out of Optus to a Catch Connect SIM so would I be eligible for this deal?

          • @zorrt: You're very lucky, I went into an Optus and called around a few Harvey Normans and they all can't do the double data

    • Only for Port ins

  • +1

Get the same plan from Harvey Norman for additional. 10% off

    • +1

Can you link to the HN 10% off?

  • +1

I’m seeing this as iPhone X 64GB for $59 per month. Makes the phone itself about $660 which is not bad at all.

    • +1

Click it again it’s $79. Likely your seeing another phone & it hasn’t refreshed

      • Pretty sure it’s the iPhone X.

Maybe $59 for those using Safari in iOS?

        https://imgur.com/gallery/zUegdZO

        • +1

Click on it, you haven't actually clicked on the phone, for some reason scrolling across doesn't update the pricing. I'm sure you'll find every phone is $59 when you just scroll across without selecting any.

          • +8

@Binchicken22: Yeah sorry I screwed up. Can’t read.

            • @Boba: On mobile huh? Their mobile website is weird.

  • I clicked existing customer and it still shows the 30 GB offer. It stated "new services only" as part of the terms and conditions. Confusing…
Also, anyone knows if this is a own or lease plan ?

    • It's own plan, it requires extra service (new number with Optus)

  • +3

Now just need Telstra or Vodafone to chime in with their deal so I can port my optus across to them :P Rotating every 2 years between providers

    • i want to try out the telstra network. cmon telstra i need that pixel deal

  • Very tempted to upgrade from my S8+ to the pixel 3 for $53 a month (if the HN 10% off plans thing is true)… Was planning on waiting for the S10 but don't know what to do now :/

    • +1

s10 release date is feb 20, optus deal ends 31 march, wait & see what deals are offered for the s10.. & yes HN 10% off is true lol

      • +1

Cool, thanks for confirming the HN pricing. Do you know how long that's on offer for or is that a long running deal?

Yeah when I got my S8+ on release Woolworths mobile (Telstra network) were offering the best deals at the time, think I'm paying about $68 a month for it and I got around a $100 cashback through cash rewards too. Will be interesting what Woolworths offer this time.

        • deal is off & on regularly, think 10% is standard through HN just need to ask, last year august they offered 20% off, i was in-store on the weekend & asked was told its still available

          • @RogueWolf: Do you know if it stack with student discount?

            • @[Deactivated]: previous deals have seen people have applied student discount also, think sign up through HN then go on online optus chat later & ask for it to be applied

            • +4

              @[Deactivated]: They do stack.

              1. Sign up through HN - get your 10% off with new contracts if they're running the promo.
              2. Contact Optus chat, ask to apply your student discount code, they'll apply it to your account (need acc number/service number).
              3. Following billing month will have the 10% student discount applied.

              Example:
              $59 plan
              10% HN = $5.9 credit
              10% Student = $5.31 credit
              Total = $47.79/m

              • @steb89: Do I have to contact Optus immediately or within certain period?

                • @[Deactivated]: Not that I know of, I just did it within a week of signing up to a previous deal :)

                  • @steb89: Thanks for your help.

              • +1

@steb89: 10% HN offer is for Ports

    • -1

Definitely wait. Also don't just P to pixel if you use the Samsung software at all, it's extremely basic.

  • Can i use student discount?

    • +1

Maybe get the harvey norman discount and walk over to optus to get the student discount?

      • Has anyone tried that successfully

        • I can confirm now that student discount available at student hub page. Also the plan is available for upgrading existing plan.

          • @[Deactivated]: The student discount, can I apply for it after sign the contract?

            • @asianbargain: Just waiting for someone to confirm, haha if its true i will sign it

              • @Ghosteye: It's true, both stack :)

                • @steb89: The staff at Harvey insists it is not. Without the additional 10%, I don't think it is a good deal.

          • @[Deactivated]: Sorry are you saying that existing customers can indeed upgrade to one of these phones and plans?

            • @gobarney: Yes it is available at student hub website

          • @[Deactivated]: But did you go past the temporary order number? It says it'll take up to 7 days to confirm order. And if you look at the student hub, it says for new orders only. It does process the upgrades for existing customer but only with temp order number. So I'm not too sure if this will be honoured for upgrades.

            • @sacs2k1: I did not, the employee said it can't stack so I didn't order.

              • @[Deactivated]: I've had a previous sale from HN with 10% off, and have got the student 10% as well, it stacks :)

        • does this just require a valid .edu email address? do they check student ID or anything?

          • +1

@MushuPork: sure does. they send a code to your student email to make sure its still active
