  • This seems awfully similar to the RAVPower Filehub Plus, even the interface.. hmm..

  • To share the 4G network, do i need a USB 4G dongle to be plugged into this device?

  • +1

I wonder if @xev can get another deal on the RAVPower Filehub Plus.

  • Bridge and extend WiFi: Share internet securely with others (but it's NOT a hotspot

    What does this means?
Can I share single account hotel's wifi and share it with multiple devices?

    • I think they're trying to say it doesn't have 3/4G functionality.

    • +5

yes, that's exactly what it means.

I have had this device for over 2 years. It works well, but there are some seriously annoying gotchas, but it works and does it thing pretty well, if you can put up with some annoyances.

Some points, in no particular order.

      • It does indeed allow you to share internet connections. This is awesome anytime you have to pay for a connection. YES, it does work on a plane wifi and it works for hotel wifi.
      • There are other devices that do that, but have to be plugged in. This built in battery lasts 8-10 hours of routing on battery power, which is pretty decent. There are indeed other battery powered routers, but this has 10400mah of battery, so it's one of the biggest.
      • The best use case is traveling. If you have a bunch of devices, it's awesome to get to a hotel, turn this thing on, get it on the network and then all your devices (tablet, alexa, chromecast, phones etc all get online instantly.) This works best if you have kids, as you don't have to do anything other than deal with this device.
      • once you log into it, you can set up the internet connection. You select the wifi network you want to get to, and then it will pop up the authentication page and you log the router into the network, then your devices connect to the router SSID. I use the same SSID name as I do at home, so it's transparent to my devices.
      • one of the annoyances is that DNS sometimes needs to be set to whatever hotel or airplane uses as its DNS. What I do is normally connect my phone to the SSID (but don't log in), take note of the settings, and then put that DNS into the hootoo. That usually solves the problem.
      • it works far better with an ethernet connection than wifi. Wifi bridging works, but I've had it flake a bit and lose connection, so you have to reauthenticate. It totally depends on the hotel (I've used this in 50+ hotels, so I feel like I have a good sample size)
      • One of the biggest annoyances is that it is not terribly fast. As soon as someone releases one with a battery and faster wifi/router processor, it's an instant buy. I love the functionality, I just wish it was more robust.
      • it's a great tool for extending a network. I stayed in an Airbnb that had wifi at one end of the house but not the other. I set this up midway to my room and it just extended the coverage just enough that I could use my laptop in the bedroom. win!

In short, if you travel w/ 3+ devices that you want online, want to save money on hotel or airplane wifi (and who on ozbargain doesn't?), then this is a no brainer to have in your travel bag. I never leave for a trip without it. It's far from perfect, but it's just as important to my as my eneloops.

      • Very solid first-hand review.
        Thanks for sharing :)

  • Why couldn't you connect to this wirelessly then turn on phone VPN?
