Anyone in Melbourne with an Amex want to get on this deal and sell me a phone for 363?

I'm willing to meet up and pay in cash.

  • Just curious - I have amex deals hidden, so why am I seeing this? Is it because of the lack of amex tag? Or does a mod need to mark it as amex?

    • i guess because the tag is "mobile" only.

Just curious, how could i filter some tags out like "perfume".

      Thanks.

    B28 and NFC: YES

That shows ten years of OzBargain experience. You know your audience.

    • +5

      I have Pocophone F1 for $350.
No NFC, but CommBank gave me a PayTag that sticks to the back of my phone.
Snapdragon 846 with 6GB ram is lightning fast.

I'm running PixelExperience ROM so the phone feels 100% Pixel.

I would not trade down to anything below Snapdragon 845.

      • +1

Where did you get your Pocophone @$350?

      • +1 for mentioning the pixel experience thingy. I have my bootloader unlocked in my xiaomi phone , I tried using custom rom many times but failed . Any links or suggestions for me please?

        • What Xiaomi do you have? Also you need to install a custom recovery before flashing a custom rom.

          • @Zylam Marex: I have mi8 too. All I've done is unlocked the bootloader and tried to install custom room /global xiaomi room watching YouTube but failed.

            • @Do I NeedThis: Have you tried a video for your exact model? Sometimes there minor differences in region variants. Specially with Xiaomi models in India. However that shouldn't be much of a problem.

So did you try installing a custom recovery? When you mean failed, exactly what did you try to do?

Can you post a link of the video you followed?

This is the place you want to go for all info. Mi8 XDA

              • @Zylam Marex: I followed a few after failing on the first few. No i didn't get the exact model but the video said it'd work on any xiaomi phones. I downloaded twrp files and tried to install them from command mode through my MacBook.

The link you've provided doesn't work, also if you know a video for xiaomi mi 8 Chinese variant please share with me. Thanks

think the idea of nfc for payments is “secure payments” is that if you loose your phone, it can’t be used due to pin or biometric unlock eg finger print or facial ….loose it with just a tag that has no security and you might find someone goes on a spending spree.

nfc also being trialed for use on public transport travel.

      • why not just go android one on pie rather than trying to reskin and have to play with bootloaders etc …some people just want to use a phone and don’t have skill set or time to tinker to get the pixel experience ….that is one of the things why google introduced android one program ….else reminds me of people who used to reskin android phones with ios icons …..

    • Whats the big deal of band 28 can someone explain? NFC means you can do paypass transactions via phone i believe but whats so good about band 28?

      • +4

700 mhz due to the wavelength gives better coverage in some situations eg rural area and through walls.
it’s why telstra and optus have invested so heavily in boosting their band 28 coverage and paid more for band 28 than 5g spectrum.

so it’s importnat for people in rural areas, and for people in city area that have issues with walls.

also used by some phones as part of bandwidth aggregation.

band 28 is used in taiwan, australia and some european countries, but not in china, usa or india which is a big market for many chinadroids.

  • Kogan has the Nokia 8 for $349. Which ones better?

    • -4

      Better at what?

These days they'll both make calls a-ok.

Also, pretty much all will social media just fine.

but if you have something specific in mind, let us know and we'll advise

    • 5.3"vs 6" screen may be the key spec difference when choosing either of the phones.

    • +5

Nokia 8 is older and not Android One, but packs a Snapdragon 835, and the camera setup (13MP Front, dual 13MP rear - 1x Mono, 1x Colour with stabilisation, but essentially 3 of the same camera) is different as well. Both are good phones, I chose a Nokia 8 a few months back and have been very happy (both were similar in price at the time as well).

      Hope this helps.

      • How have you found the camera? Some negative reviews on have held me back from purchasing.

        • nokia 7 plus and Nexus on Pie got new camera software in December along with dec security update.

So you'd need to check reviews for what version of camera software they evaluated.

          • @garage sale: With the update for Pie you can also download the modded Google Camera that enables night sight and portrait mode and all the goodies you normally get on a Pixel

            • @Agret: Can you provide a link for a stable version of the modded Google camera app? The last few I've tried kept crashing

      • Appreciate your input Aim. Think id be happy with either. Like other offers in here, if somebody has an AMEX I'm also willing to buy a 7 plus off them. I'm in Melbourne.

  • Happy to go halves with Amex holder in Newcastle area if interested

    • I have AMEX, but don't need the phone (already have one). If you find another person after one, happy to buy both and sell.

      • I'm interested. PM me.

  • +1

Happy to pay for $370 for picking up in Melbourne area.

    • Hi, let me know if you are still keen. I have the offer and can share it.

  • I missed the '2x' and was like "How is this a deal?"

  • Don't have an AmEx personally, but if someone in Brisbane wants to do this I'd be happy to give you $370 cash for one of these.

    • Yes, in Brisbane too, interested in halfway.

      • I can help you guys, I'm in Sydney though.

      • I may be able to help both of you out. Just PM me and we can arrange a place and time. I'm on the southside so Garden City is probably the best store for me.

        • Im interested in halfway. Happy to meet at garden City. Let me know

  • Is Nokia 6.1 with Android One for $318 good price?

    • +2

yes, Office works had it down to $317 which was great for AU stock and warranty, bought one 2 weeks ago, updated to pie and dec security patches, and latest camera software.

The AU 6.1 is 32gb, the AU 7 plus is 64gb … you'd need to decide if you go 6.1 and add an SD card if needed, or stretch budget $100 more and go 7 plus.

Both are running same software releases, 7 plus has slightly better processor and slightly bigger battery.

      • Don't forget the 7 plus has dual cameras. I'm using the 6.1 atm, overall it's decent but the camera is a let down especially because I've come from using a v20

  • Single sim. Deal breaker for me.

    • Man we are living in an age where single sim is becoming is deal break 😭

    • Just put the other sim in the other phone.
      Unless you have 3+ sims?…

      • yeah, if work supplies phone it will be better phone than this eg samsung or iphone and work covers losses or breakage or upgrades,

i think some people on tight budgets keep one for number and sim swap one for data or cheap international calls …. i used to do that ….upgraded plan and now it’s all in one ….

never hear iphone users complain about only 1 sim and they moved to android for dual sim phone ….

    • The Grey stock version is hybrid dual Sim. Which is what I use.

I swap between a Singapore Sim or Europe Sim depending on where I'm going

    • yep..Dual Sims is a must for me..NFC+Compass

  • -1

I alone in not understanding what's required here?

  • Worth noting that google have removed their guarantee of two years of updates for android one.

    • +2

still 2 years of android 3 years security …..it’s why you need a phone with treble compliance on android one.
phones on android one that shipped with nougat didn’t need to be treble compliant so would have an issue for 3 years of security updates.
phones that are treble compliant eg shipped with oreo on the android one program get 3 years.

part of android one is googles aim to stretch updates for longer periods as they are often critised for not supporting hardware as long as apple eg 5 years of updates, with pixel google aren’t out to make money, it’s to promote android and show case what can be done, it’s why they give it away provided its bundled and preinstalled with certain google apps so they can collect data and make $$.

the EU wants google to unbundle some apps due to gdpr and also market dominant powers ….google responded that unbundling some google apps would result in extra cost of $40 per phone if they can’t make money collecting data.

      • +2

one rule of the internet. write the wrong info and someone will surely correct you

  • Another happy to go halves here. In Melbourne. Don't have an Amex.

    • +1

Hi Zylam, ill pm you, have activated the offer.

  • The Nokia 7.1 is $397 each, so two for $794 or $322ea with Amex deal.

Do you think the 7 Plus is worth the $41 extra? I don't mind the notch, but the 3GB of RAM worries me a bit.

    • +3

question of ram is always an interesting one in rdagrds to a raw number to help market a product eg we have more ram or upgrade to het more ram VS actual ram used and what developers are developing to as a target platform to get users uptake eg if you need too much ram your app will have a limited market and also google to make sure their OS works on as many and as cheap a platform as practical.

it’s a good idea to check what apps you typically run and how much ram is actual used, work with real numbers.

android apps are usually very small, it’s what mobile apps are about, as is the size of the actual OS that is loaded.

i’ve never hit 3gb of ram being complete used. If you have a specialized game you might need a certain amount of ram, it if you are running that game you are playing the game and probably not running lots of other apps, check what it neeeds, but generally android apps are actually small to work across a broad range of hardware, check the size of the installs and resources used.

also they keep apps smal for updates , some people have small data plans and if your apps are big eg 1gb who will want to update vs a 100 mb app.

some games will run locally so need more ram, most cloud apps use APIs so some is processed on phone some on server in cloud and these are small, some just used a browser, so you just need to load the browser.

    • +1

I went with the Nokia 7.1. One for me and one for the Mrs. The 7 Plus was a touch too big, plus this is newer, so theoretically longer software support from Google. Happy with it so far!

      • Cool. I was in the same boat. Got matching phones with the boss too :).

The bigger battery and Snapdragon 660 nudged me across to the plus.

  • +2

Don't want any but happy to buy both for someone. I'm around Parra in Sydney or on seven Hills for work (work closed till 7th though)

I have an Amex and have activated the offer

    • I want one
      Anyone in Sydney also interested?

      • +2

        Me but I'm in Adelaide

  • +1

Anyone got a real world user review of this phone?

    • +2

I own and it's great, previous phones were LG V20, Xiaomi A1.

Haven't found any bugs, it's on Android 9 (pie) with Dec security updates, battery lasts about 2 days, camera seems as good as my LG V20 or A1, I usually download to PC for editing and on a 32" screen is where you see things while editing, just got a dec camera update, haven't done comparisons since then.
I also owned moto X1 which was 21 megapixel … but haven't compared to my old photos.

Big thing is software not just the sensor, hence same sensor with different software gets different results, so you want a phone that gets updates and support, hence why people buy pixel …. google keep updating software rather than move to the next model phone.

    • +1

Had one since June. It's great for the price

  • +1

I am in Sydney if anyone wants to share half. I got Amex offer saved.

    • I want one, please dm me

      • Happy to buy second one. I live in Wentworthville.

  • +2

If anyone's in Melbourne and interested in this offer, I'm happy to help out.
I'm personally not getting this phone but if two or more are interested I can help out.

    • +3

Hey mate, I am definitely interested and thank you. Hopefully somebody else in Melb is interested.

      • +1

I'll go the other half if you guys don't already have a second! :)

  • +2

Brilliant, eyeing off this phone for a while and this is perfect.

Got one for me and one for my wife.
Both our phones are struggling. My HTC 10 has next to no battery life (using the spare office phone - s7) and my wifes old Sharp Docomo is giving up the ghost (its stuck on Android 4.4).

If you do purchase, be sure to use Credit Card from the checkout - not AMEX express to qualify. I got my confirmation email from AMEX so thats dandy.

$367 each delivered… stoked with that.

    • Ah I just used the Amex express and got an email saying "You’ve just used your Domayne Amex Offer". Are you saying it might not credit the $150 :'(

      • If you got the email, you're safe.

      • Yup you are safe - thats generally the trigger for the credit.
You'll get it in around 10 days usually.

  • Hello Oz Bargainers, I am in Melbourne and have the offer saved. If anyone is still interested, we can share the deal. Please let me know asap.

    • Is that a trick question

    • -1

      iPhone SE.

  • Anyone in Melbourne want to do this with me? I have the deal, just need a partner!

  • no dual sims..sad. what's your thought on https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Nokia-7-Plus-Black-Dual-4G-LTE-6…? prefer dual sims

if this have dual sims but without NFC…still consider joining one of you split the bill in half
